NPD June 2007

375$ avg for Xbox

If my calculations are right, ~25% of 360's sold were Core's.

Aprox. 50k core's ($15million), 150k Premiums ($60mil) for an average of $375/unit ($75mill).

That's actually a fairly good indicator for the strength of the core package, especially given it's current 'gimpage' with a wired controller, and overpriced storage options.

I wonder how much that will change when the Core comes down to $199, into the range of people who are even more price sensitive(read: less likely to need a hdd or component cables). Coupled with a reduction in peripheral pricing, you could see the core near 30 or 40% of total sales...

"Official NPD data for June is in and, once again, Nintendo's handheld and console dominated the charts. Nintendo DS sold through a whopping 561,000 units for the month and Wii pulled in another 381,000 believers, making the two systems the number-one and number-two best-sellers respectively in June.

Sony's PSP performed surprisingly well, with sales undoubtedly spurred by a recent price drop. The handheld managed 290,000 in sales, which was good enough to nab the third best-selling spot for the month. Meanwhile, PlayStation 2 garnered another 270,000 unit sales, earning it the number-four position.

Xbox 360 sales, at 198,000, were nearly doubled by Wii. Game Boy Advance attracted another 113,000 people and, finally, PlayStation 3 continued to trail behind all competitors with 98,000 in sales -- a number that is up over previous months, but still well behind Wii or Xbox 360.

The top-selling games largely belonged to Nintendo, too. Against IGN's recommendation, Wii owners continued to buy Mario Party 8, which pulled in another 426,000 in sales to become the month's best-selling game. Wii Play nabbed the second slot with 293,000. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl sucked in 288,000 and 214,000 new DS fans respectively and Xbox 360's Forza Motorsport 2 capped out the top five with 197,000 in sales.

Despite low ratings and a lackluster online mode, more than 157,000 people were tricked into buying Pokemon Battle Revolution for Wii. However, in more positive news, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition managed nearly 150,000 in sales through June after being available for about 10 days."

GBA wins again :(

Wii is going to double 360 for a while. Nintendo made a product and went after a market that MS had no chance of capturing even if they introduced the product instead. You need the Nintedo image, and even Sony would have a tough time replicating that success. Overall, MS can't do anything about the Wii, I suspect, so the PS3 is their target.

I expect next month we'll see PS3 match or surpass 360. A lot of people were waiting for the first price drop, and the bad image of the 360's reliability will kick in.

The question is how long it will last.

That doesn't take into account the Elite. I'm not sure what percentage of sales it gets, but that has to be offset by the Core as well.

Dammit...the 3rd variable!! Screws everything!

Edit - Actually, doesn't that increase the number of cores sold?? Elites would raise the average, which tells is that it's actually over 50,000 cores that were sold.

The dollar splits are not official, they are entirely my own conjecture. I'm just trying to reasonable guess an average, with absolutely nothing to back it up :)
I'm tallying up these numbers only to produce the reference market size as a benchmark for the individual performances. I find it useful for comparison, as it turns the seasonal fluctuations in the market into something more tangible. But you shouldn't read to much into them on their own.

Ohh...so that whole 5 minutes of critical thinking has been wasted??

ROOOOOLLLLFF!! :devilish:

The Wii is simply out of control. Next month should be very good for the PS3 for obvious reasons. It'll be interesting to see if the PS3 selling well hurt or effect 360 sales in any manner.

While I expect next month to be strong for the PS3, the following 2-3 months will determine the staying power at that price range. The 360 simply needs a price drop if they are to maximize their large library of games coming out for the rest of 2007 starting in August.

Those PS3 numbers are very disappointing, hopefully in July, the #s will come up substantially.

Nintendo - owns

360 - holding steady around 45k units/week, but need a price drop asap.

You seriously think PS3 is going to sell double what it has sold the last few months (even a 5 week month) over a $100 price drop? In July none the less? With no major releases unless you want to consider football/nascar one of them? With those coming mid to end of month?

PS3 won't hit 200k in NA until sept-nov.

And 360 reliability will continue to have zero to no effect on the sales.

Wii will continue to sell. It's potential is being realized by the large target audience ranging from 13-89.

Oh yeah, the July NPDs have the potential for something truly epic.
The PS3 will without a doubt get another spike, not unlike a launch spike, from its price-cut. What's much more difficult to forecast is how high will it go, and how long will it last. I've just read that SCEA claims a 135% increase for the firs two weeks of July, for an unkown subset of retailers. With that in mind it seems possible that in the July NPDs the PS3 will outsell the XBox 360, though again, the real challenge will be how much momentum will come out of this spike, into the fall and xmas sales.

The second big ingredient for July epicness is of course the retroactive warranty extension for XBox 360, plus the press reaction, and the financial statements that have been made around that. You'd expect me to low-ball the XBox 360 anyway, so I might as well call it now: I expect July NPDs to show less XBox 360s sold than June NPDs, even when factoring out the five-week anomaly. Let's say I pat myself on the back if it's at least 10% less per week. Reasons: consumer confusion coupled with an invigorated market of used product.

What other games do people play on their DS? How can that many DS be sold, and people only buying Pokemon/Super Mario??

PS3 just needs to release those AAA titles in the pipeline. It reminds me of the original Xbox in its initial 18 months.

"Double" sounds like a lot. 100k from an install base of 45 million sounds like peanuts. I don't think it's a stretch to say that on top of the usual 100k, 0.2% of PS2 users were waiting for the first price drop.

We've already seen evidence of a PS3 sales spike from Amazon. I think PS3 will hit 200k for July quite easily, and maybe more. Price drop, E3 hype, games on the horizon, etc. The bigger question is how fast it will tail off after that.

Your right, double does sound like a lot, because it is! That's exactly what your are saying will be 'easy.' I just wanted to make sure that was exactly what you were saying! :)
