NPD August 2007

Oh come, those games are nearly the same every year. They had nothing like the hype that Gears did, plus Gears was an exclusive. Gears went on to w
sell very well, (4m+) but as I mentioned previously, Resistance has done 2m+. Both were packaged in bundles..

Call Of Duty 2 sold 2+ millions. Call of Duty 3 sold more than 1.6 million. R6:V sold more than 1.8 million.

R6:V is the same every year? Its hardly released every year, and it got a 90% (or close like 89% or something) score on gamerankings.

Gears had plenty of competition for being action title of the year. It had plenty competition in terms of sales, your argument is moot.

Err..well clearly, Lair has will sell more thats what was quoted earlier in the thread, based on the NPD numbers...

And your argument for this is that NPD only gets information from 60% of the total us gaming market? So are you saying that Lair will only sell in those 40% stores that aren't being tracked? If you knew anything about statistics, you would realize how stupid that statement is.

Lair is not exclusive? Liar was not hyped up? Com'on it was, but development started to show signs of trouble and soon the hype dissolved. If Gears' develop started to leaked ugly images or problem, don't you think Gears will tank also. Good thing that Gears turned out good, thus fueling the hype even more.

Good, but also overhyped in terms of it offered nothing new.

As for Lair, it hasnt been released in most parts of the world, so its too early to write off, despite reviews. Again, people prefer to talk about failures (potential or otherwise) rather than the succeses (such as Motorstorm which I'm playing now) because that is what makes headlines.

Out of curiosity how Forza II sold?
I've the feeling that It had not meet a great success in regard to good reviews and returns from members here.

As for our discussion, I would not be all that surprized if a non exclusive title like assassin "steal" some hype (and sales) from some coming exclusives.

Forza 2 will probably wind up doing ok in sales overall, its being packed in (at least it is in Canada).

no it doesn't.

Yes it does, when people are saying Lair has sold X amount, when the figure only accounts for 60% of retail outlets. Even comparing to other games isnt completely valid, as more or less people may have ordered from Amazon etc. Hope this helps.

ya it helps, helps show you don't know what you are talking about. NPD is the retail benchmark for North America, period.

That statement is ridiculous. It takes account of around 60% of retail outlets. I dont care what it is the benchmark of, if you're going to ignore that fact, I would you are pretty stubborn .

To say I dont what I'm talking about is incredibly arrogant.

I'm not questioning the accuracy of what NPD accounts for, merely raising its limitations.

You can make accurate predictions based on a much smaller sample than 60%.

FFS, it's been proven to be a reliable subsample of NA retail sales. You just won't find systematic errors to the effect that one title or the other sold significantly more at non-covered outlets so as to skew the general trend of the numbers.

However, you're right: We can't say that current Lair sales are less than 50K. We can, on the other hand, ascertain with a high degree of certainty that Lair sales fell well below expectations and that, compared to other titles available in the same timeframe, they did indeed suck. Badly.

NPD btw has been working on adding more sampling just recently adding both Gamestop/EBGames, Amazon and apparently some other online retailers just last month.

Edit: Oh also they track Wal-mart now as well it seems checking their website.

I agree; of course we cant. In fact, they're almost certainly considerably higher than that.

That's over 80% of the market easy right there

Nintendo's brand image is definitely weakened. They made about Super Mario 3 and the power glove ... a theatrical release commercial, basically. That brand image was much stronger than the image they hold today.

I think that's precisely why they effectively abandoned the Nintendo name with the Wii. It's actually a form of guerilla warfare, "turning a disadvantage into an advantage" - making the name stand out in a way that sets it apart.
