No European PS3 launch until March

I can't shake the ugly feeling the NA launch is going to have to get pushed as well. They appear to have picked the minimalist number they could get by with, and that looks to me like the business end picking a number and telling the execution end to make it happen rather than the execution end telling them what's possible. To me, that puts them at real risk of having to come back in late September or early October and kiss off the NA launch too. I think they'd have been better served to have swallowed the nasty medicine now in full, rather than get a double-dip on the vitriol by delaying Europe now and NA later.

You expect MS will run out of money like sega....lol
Anyway I agree it's the same with a big but Sony has competitor this time.

I'm talking about Sony and I'm expecting MS to run out of money?

EDIT: If you are talking about PS2 launch, no I am not talking about PS2 launch per se, just about the shortages. This does in no way mean that PS3 will lose but the chance of it winning the console war just got lowered by 5-10%, god knows where its at at the moment...probably -50%.

WoW that is bad news for Sony.

I wonder what kinds of actions from MS and N will this make, I guess that if they are very agressive with price and marketing they could get a lot of new users (probably garanting much more later). Specially because last gen consoles will (already) does have very few interesting new games (actually cant remember any, but as long as there is a new fifa and such....) and those who want to get new/good games will probably need to get one of the the new consoles. Thus making a risk of snowball fx.

it's a given ms will do its first drice drop when the ps3 will launch in europe and just before halo lunch.
No need to think twice aboutit.

Yep. Sony only has FF12 really, but PS2 is getting tired, poor little thing... They've milked it for 7 years now, by the time PS3 comes out in Europe it will be 8 years (!!), and really, it's time to go to sleep...

God of War 2 will help too...

But really, MS and Nintendo will have this christmas and PS2 won't be able to outsell newer consoles again for the first time, it's just too much.

Really have to applaud what Sony did with the PS2 though. It outsold anything that has been released after it, years after it was released. It's just getting a little too much now and this Christmas, Sony won't be at the top of kid's wishes for the first time in about 11 years... Kinda freaky...

I don't want to be mean, ;) i was almost kidding, and i don't thinking that ps3 will lose.
But when you speak about the ps2 launch i've just thinking that you were missing something in the big picture : competitors.
Anyway, i've read too much forum to day, and it have some influence on me it' s trolling fest on the web today... excuse me , i don't want to offend you ;)

You know who i really feel for now? Cliffy B.

GoW is the most important game i can remember since Halo for the original xbox. The amount of pressure on his team and this game is just staggering. I would implode if i were him...

EDIT: If any of you saw the "Road to E3" GoW special on MTV you know that when Cliff met BILL GATES outside Bill asked him if the game would be ready this holiday and CLiff said yes. BILL GATES then looked him in the eye and said "Good. we're really counting on you..."

Games have provided the bulk of Sony's profits for years while electronics was becoming stagnant and a commodity business.

Movies were hit and miss (pun intended), great when they released something like Spiderman and bad in other years.

There's a whole lot more profit margin in a $60 game than a $30 movie disc. Movies have higher budgets than games and a big selling DVD doesn't necessarily sell in much higher volume to make up the difference in margins. A GTA game which sells 10 million is probably moving more units at higher margins than a hot-selling Pixar DVD.

Remember, Sony is not the only company who'd reap royalties from Blu-Ray.

Now Sony obviously wants Blu-Ray to win but they don't want to endanger the Playstation business to do so, at least not wittingly.

As for allocating the most to NA, maybe it's not so much about fighting HD-DVD but meeting certain obligations to the studios for Blu-Ray support. Plus it's X360's biggest market (Playstation's too).

PS2 will be 6 years old this Xmas, not 7!

It's a trooper, it'll do well this Xmas I think. It's still selling very very well here, and I don't expect that to suddenly stop coming into the holidays (which are only a couple of months away), do you?

How many consoles are sold in EU during holiday season on average? Though this is not a good news but I don't think MS is going to get benefit much out of it, 360 would have sold well irrespective of PS3 launch? The question is does MS have the capacity to increase 360's production so that it can take advantage of the situation?

No need to think twice aboutit.

That is true but doing a price cut before or after Xmas is very diferent, in this case they can do it in EU and get a good number of new users and possible a snowball fx (ie that this relatively small new user help making the total number much bigger in the future that it would be without those new users, in fact that had been great part of the reason why SOny had so much sucess with PS2).

London, just out of curiosity what game would temp you to dip your finger into the 360 world? Don't get me wrong I'm just lucky enough to have an understanding wife and means (for now!) to lash out on all the consoles. Don't the new 360 franchises such as Lost Planet, Dead Rising or stuff like Mass Effect interest you at all? I have never understood this one console thing; you just miss out on too many good games. Also in the long run I think it actually saves you money because I noticed I have become far more discerning on what titles on buy owning multiple consoles, whereas back in the MD days I used to buy old rubbish.

Well, i don't expect it to die off of course, but the poor little thing is tired...

It will be 7 years considering to the Japanese launch... right? *Starts counting*

By the way, the "PS3 stories" european campaign isn't being postponed afterall.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=19508

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony spokesperson said: "We don't know where the Media Guardian got it from, but we are not shelving the PS3 marketing campaign."

The spokesperson confirmed that the new PS3 website, which launched yesterday, will remain live - and that the short films made to promote the console, otherwise known as 'PS3 stories', will continue to roll out.

"Now more than ever is it necessary to promote the key USPs of PlayStation 3, and we believe the 'Stories' campaign is an excellent way of doing this," the spokesperson concluded.

It'll be 7 when it launches in march, not 8 ;) I don't expect sales will drop off a cliff from where they are at the moment, and AFAIK, it's still doing very well here.

At the moment, X360 sales across Europe are not supply limited but rather demand limited. So if demand increases during the winter season, I'm sure Ms can meet the demand.

So MS probably knew about PS3 EU delay when they claimed 1 year exclusive PES deal. <guessing>

It's really not a brand name preference at all (although i do admit "liking" Sony equipment in general more, certainly more than MS hardware).

The games i'm talking about would be (on top of my head but there would be more) the Final Fantasies, Kingdom Hearts, and now also a few Sony 1st party ones like whatever the Ico team does, whatever the GOW team comes up with, whatever Naughty Dog do... Oh and i want a new ZOE!!

So either way, i'm f**ked. To be honest, i'm not THAT bothered, i mean i wouldn't have bought one until well into 2007 anyway, but still...

Yep you are, The only thing that cracks me up about the delay is Sony is leaving Europe out to dry for 3 months as normal. Least MS gave us the 360 at the same time as the US when there launch numbers were similar to what Sony has announced. I will get the PS3 when I can and will buy the Wii when I can (although having a 9 yr old helps here). As for your games, I can't wait to see what the ICO has got in store for us.
