Mate thats the whole Idea of unity (I guess the names a hint). Its got nothing to do with MS platforms but practically any platform

heres one of my unity games

auzed.com/webgames/prafectionedgeUL/index.html

playable on PCs/phones/tablets

The problem is A game made for a PC vs one made for a phone is you have to 'dumbdown' a lot of things / code to the lowest common deniminator eg input, graphics readibility. Thus yes it may run on lots of platforms but you're prolly getting a less than ideal experience

I don't mean the unity code, I mean all the app code, that is what Microsoft said in the //build 2014, the new universal apps.

Yeah I meant to post a follow-up, I watched Eurogamer's livestream of it shortly after it appeared, without ceremony, on the online store. Eurogamer speculated the release was a mistake and I think they thought it may be full of nasty bugs but it's just a rather average game.

Both nextgen versions are mediocre. Digital Foundry took a quick look and found much wanting

Dreamfall Chapters could be released on Xbox One: (great news as I have The Longest Journey on PC, and I like it very much)

Still, this conversation reminds me of Shifty's friends issues with indie publishing these days.

Disagree! Stay flat! I don't mind the backgrounds though. I can choose something subtle and other people can have their ugly loud garbage.

Yeah, as a graphic designer, I definitely think flat, minimalist, 'modern' design is a good thing.

Both Apple and Google (not to mention Facebook and others) are now following in the footsteps of Microsoft.

Who would have thought that Microsoft of all people would be spearheading a hugely successful UI design revolution, it's a big coup for them.

And they all look pretty plain and boring, sometimes even ugly. Transparency or somesuch coupled with flat icons work (and by flat, I mean dull and uninteresting, and not that I want 3D icons!) because the interest comes from the background, but the current wave of extraordinarily uninteresting, unpretty icons isn't designed around them being translucent. The end result is a world of single white letters on squares of colour. Using services now is like working in the 1990s when interfaces were similarly flat, monochromatic icons on white out of technical limitations.

I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Remember the times when you looked forward to new product reveals to see what the desktop icon would look like? Now you just go great, what program is that - and you spend a few days memorizing them all. ;) I am looking at you Visual Studio.

Edit: On the plus side we are past the shiny bubble icon era.

I found something interesting. If Microsoft wants to go with AR they need Kinect to boost their efforts. See what happened if you use Kinect and Kinect Fusion technology together. Kinect should be very helpful for AR technology as it can constantly update your living room 3D model.

Kinect Fusion from 2011:

An interesting Japanese demo from 2013:

By modern do you mean ancient? The earliest iconbs on desktops were minimalistic (due to limited color/resolution) The thing with the metro icons is
1. Theyre very hard to tell what they are cause they look similar

metro.jpg

Perhaps you find the one of the left more better looking (I dont & Im willing to bet that the majority of ppl dont),
but Im sure everyone agrees the rightside one is easier to pick out in a screen full of icons quickly

On Windows and windows phone these icons are live tiles and generally they are conveying other updated information or rotating between an image of or from the application. On XBOX One main screen your looking at about 4 tile sized icons and those that are games are not flat icons (usually the box art).

That's awesome, I had never seen those videos. Thanks for sharing. I think we are going to see awesome things for Kinect. Make of that what you may.

This would be the icon on the right depicted within Metro

  • Spencer doesn’t think Microsoft will introduce a dedicated handheld gaming device. Instead they’ll work on Windows Phone and tablets, maybe with controller support some day.
  • Spencer wants to make E3′s show more focused on the fans and he’s looking for ideas to make them feel like the conference is for them even if they aren’t in Los Angeles.
  • The main focus will be on hardcore gamers.
  • There was an idea to make Cortana the voice of the show, but Spencer didn’t like it. He likes the Windows Phone feature but doesn’t want to overdo it.
  • Fans won’t have to wait for Tokyo Game Show to see Japanese Xbox games (possibly meaning that we’ll see them at E3).
  • This year Microsoft will show “stuff we are committed to, from top studios, for this year and future.”
  • We’ll get a “couple of things” announced before E3. May “Should be a good month for news.” It took Spencer a month to get the plans set.
  • Spencer has strict orders not to talk about any 343 industries IP before E3.
  • Both new IP and sequels will be announced at this year’s show.

Interesting... Lots of hype. A couple of news.

Microsoft are asking for help to improve their new Cortana for phones. And they created a webpage for that matter. I shared my feedback there. The page is fully open --mind the spies MS...

CronusMAX Controller Max, lets you play with the PS4 gamepad on Xbox One and viceversa, and it also allows you to play with the Wii gamepad on the PS4 / X360 / Xbox One, etc, plus you can use the X360 controller on the Xbox One and things like that (even Guitar Hero guitars can be used on different consoles).

Yup, no pseudo-3D shading - which makes sense, it after all is a digital icon existing in 2D space and not a physical object.

'Modern' as I am using there, for me, means minimalist design devoid of extra ornamentation purely for the sake of ornamentation.

Microsoft's E3 Press Conference on Monday 9th June.

IGN are reporting that Microsoft have announced their E3 press conference.

It starts at 12:30 Eastern / 09:30 Pacific / 17.30 UK BST (GMT+1), will last 90 minutes and will be streamed online. Among others things Microsoft are promising: "everything from in-depth looks at previously announced games to trailers for our unannounced games coming in 2014 and beyond."
