News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

worth noting cboat hasn't posted the dc rumor himself. i've just heard he is behind it (which could thus be untrue).

he's unwilling apparently to attach his name to it at the least.

No he is not, thuway and other claimed this, not CBOAT. He just said MS was having a hard time with the ESRAM yields, nothing more.

That's not entirely true, if yields are preventing MS from launching with little actual product, that's a pretty big damm issue for them. Besides that, we don't know how the contract is setup for MS, it could be on a wafer basis at which point MS is liable for yields. Dave never actually confirmed anything, he just challenged the notion that it must be MS who is at risk for poor yields.

Why would MS order from AMD on a wafer basis? AMD doesn't sell wafers to its OEMs as AMD owns and maintains it own ATMP operation. Is MS going to find someone to do it cheaper, when AMD and intel are practically the only companies who performs such services for x86. If other companies do handle ATMP for x86 based chips then they already have a relationship with Intel or AMD, who get better pricing based on volume.

It makes sense to purchase on a wafer basis when you've license the rights to manufacture an IP and thats how most foundries conduct business. Plus shopping around may help to lower manufacturing costs. MS doesn't own any rights to x86.

Major Nelson says that Microsoft won't render your Xbox One games unplayable in the long term. The 24 hour check is there to ensure you can play anywhere -I.e. playing at a friend's house even if he doesn't have the game nor you lugged the disc with you-.

He also says that it is a forward looking console.

So if they ban you your games work forever but only 24 hours (without checking in) if you play by the rules.

Seems to make sense.

Is the online check tied to your Live! account? Otherwise if you get banned, how do you clock-on every 24 hours? Do you have to pay Live! subscription to gain access to your content on the banned account, but be unable to play online because you're banned? :???:

Not that it really matters, as long as the banning is just! :devilish:

You don't have to pay the Gold subscription to access or purchase content, just like with the Xbox 360.

Don't people usually use expendable accounts for mischief?

You just need a Gold account to play them?

No, there are still silver accounts. You should still be able to download and play games with a Silver account.

From a PR document AzBat posted in the e3 thread:
Q: How is Xbox Live Gold membership different on Xbox One? What is included in the membership?
A: An Xbox Live Gold membership offers a premium interactive entertainment service on Xbox One that spans across games, TV shows and movies, music, sports and more. Xbox Live Gold provides the best multiplayer gaming experience. As a Gold member, gamers will get premier member benefits including fast matchmaking, instant switching between games and entertainment and the ability to capture, edit and share gameplay via Game DVR, Upload Studio and Twitch. Xbox Live Gold also offers an all in one entertainment experience with an enhanced with a programming guide, Skype video and voice calling and intuitive browse and search capabilities powered by Kinect.

We’re also announcing today a new benefit for Gold membership on Xbox One is the ability for anyone in your home to access many Xbox Live Gold benefits on your Xbox One at no additional cost. And the primary Xbox Live Gold membership travels with you to any Xbox One system.

Q: Will Xbox Live on Xbox One have a Silver membership offer, and if so, what benefits does this membership tier provide?
A: Xbox Live is free to any system owner with a broadband Internet connection and includes access to a robust catalog of gaming content on Xbox Marketplace, movies and TV shows on Xbox Video, personal profiles and Achievements and in certain regions, HDMI pass-through will enable you to watch live TV from your cable, telco or satellite set-top box through your Xbox One. You can also turn your smart device into the ultimate companion with Xbox SmartGlass

What I don't think you are getting is that most games are going to have an integrated online component. There won't be any more separate single and multiplayer experiences for most games. So yes, banning ip you from multiplayer is going to give you a pretty crappy experience (and its deserved if you are cheating).

It also seems like Microsoft certification has let up on other players causing a negative experience to you allowing more PvP stuff (I.e. in a racing game, a car controlled by another user can randomly crash into you).

Wait you need XBLG to do instant switching between games and entertainment? What?

No any including free silver

Wait. I saw that and assumed tv in meant fast switching but then I saw what you menat

Gotta be a mistake
...its a UI feature

Well, it is supposed that "entertainment" apps are behind gold, just like current Xbox 360. If you don't have gold, you can't "fast switch" to that apps.

Mischiefing with an expendable account on a $€500 console FTW!

...Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. ;)
You are mischiefing my mind by saying that, it sounds so wicked... the idea of throwing 500$€ to the thrash bin.

The Xbox One can be played with your spine.

"Your spine as a third thumstick", that creeped my out for some reason.

Queue up the next great net controversy:
Thanks a lot Microsoft, now when my XBox One can't connect after 24 hours, I lose the ability to walk.

Somewhat more seriously, I guess some of us grizzled gamers will have to unlearn our years of making ourselves not lean when going into turns.

I hope they add one more bonus feature for Kinect: the ability to raise your hand to shield your eyes from the insanely over the top lens flare and sun effects that bright out half the screen in every "OMG look at our realistic graphics" shot.
