Or you can simply snipe him before the boss fight, making his wheelchair explode. Didn't know wheelchairs had explosive material in them. ;)

WOW! You mean i could completely avoid that fight! :) But when do we get the chance? I would like to try that out!

In any point during The End boss battle, if you save and wait for a week to play it again The End will kick the bucket.

But here is what I did the second time I played the game. I reached the battle, saved, changed my PS2's date one week forward, entered the game and voila he was dead. ;)

I tried many times to kill him but couldn't, then I got my PS3 and started playing Resistance, and Uncharted. Then when I got back to MGS3, I was totally surprised to find The End dead!!! :D
I laughed like Hell! It was the most funny thing to have your opponent dead because u postponed the fight! I laughed like Hell!! :D

But how do you snipe him in his chair? where?

I ve read something about it a long time ago but I didnt manage to kill him. Remember the dock area where Big Boss sends Fear while Sokolov, The End, Ocelot, Eva and Volgin are with her?

You can snipe and shoot The End from there before the soldier pushes him away. I thought I had to snipe The End. I shot him did some damage on him but ocne I did this the soldier pushed his wheel chair away. It seems that it was his wheelchair I should have shot

I'm a MGS noob, I played about half of MGS2. I did some reading of the story so I'm not completely lost. I'm trying to not get too hyped, keep expectations low. Just about every large release this gen has been over-hyped and generously scored.

So I'm expecting a confusing FMV heavy mess of a game so I will be pleasantly surprised :)

The problem still exists. What if you're interrupted 45 minutes into a cutscene and have to stop playing? Is there a way to stop the game and start back up where you left off, or would you have to watch either that 45 minutes of cutscene again, or skip the whole lot? They need a little video player with a timeline where you can select the bit you want to watch. Extended cutscene have caught me out in Japanese games plenty enough times for me to hate them, being 'forced' to keep/playing watching because there's no suitable interrupt system that allows me to choose when and what I'm going to watch. All or nothing cutscene skippage isn't a decent option in this day and age.

You're right. It's a general problem though. Even if it's gameplay story telling like some prefer, stopping the game at that point will require them to restart at the last checkpoint. In this case, it will require Konami to restart the game from just before the movie starts (Unless it's a level briefing), plus the movie progress.

Nonetheless, I like the idea of pausing movie between sessions. It should not be difficult to do. At least we can solve the level briefing cutscene problem. For MGS4, it will be more useful with all the backstory movies around.

Smart move. After the last round of reviews, I think at its core, MGS4 is still the same as its predecessors (Linear, small areas, requires memorization and retries, levels reset themselves when exited midway, booby-trapped with mind numbing details and twists, chereographed boss battles).

For people who dislike its core mechanics, they may not find time to play with the extended game (Metal Gear Online, customizable weapon, viewing more backstory videos, who knows what).

First you need to shoot the fuel barrels. This will kill the soldier pushing the End. Then shoot the End before he gets him self to safety. If you do this you'll miss out on an excellent boss battle and the change to collect a few extra's.

EGM has an interesting comment regarding their review:

"Metal Gear Solid 4 will hit store shelves shortly after this issue of EGM lands in your hot little hands. And four EGM/1up editors - Matt Leone, Jeremy Parish, Andrew Pfister, and Shane Bettenhausen - have already invested plenty of time in the game. So why don't we have a full review this issue? Simply put: We weren't happy with the limitations Konami wanted to impose on our comments, and rather than publish compromised reviews in the interest of being the first to rate the game, we'd rather wait until next issue, where we can be completely open and thorough with our thoughts."

ya I saw some other stuff about this. Apparently the print mags have been told they can't talk about the length of cut scenes (I've heard 90 minutes for 2, but that can't be right can it?) or the install size (4.6GB).

Good move. I'd rather those press took their time to do a review. I remember Eurogamer didn't even review RFOM properly (They made reference to a weapon that does not exist in the multiplayer option at all), and scored it low.

OTOH for GTA4, Take Two has been accused of manipulating the media to achieve higher scores successfully: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18761
It's another episode in the struggle between reviewers and product vendors (Hmm... and may be a race against time for both too).

For MGS4, some magazines like Edge have already broken different aspects of the NDA. If the 90 minute cutscenes are not in the default game paths, then I don't think they are relevant and should be put in context. The haters will just misuse the information.

At this point, several people already confirmed that the average cutscene length may be long (The Edge preview already out now mentioned it too). The reviewer in GAF commented that they are no where near 90 minutes though. In any case, I am still keen to see what's in the game.

I have already played Metal Gear Online. According to the Edge article in May, Kojima Studio has tried to catered to different gamers/play style in MGS4. The testers were able to complete the SP game using different strategies. MGO simply provides shooter people their fix for more target practices. ;-)

While I think MGO is not the be-all-end-all shooter game (far from it ! due to the complex controls and learning curve), I think it is an interesting take.

Although the production value is incredible, the game is primarily designed for fans and then core gamers. Based on the kind of advertising they do in Japan only, I think Sony is hoping to rejuvenate the Japan base using MGS4.

Most of the time, it takes an extended period/multiple exposure for advertising to show effects though. I am not sure if they manage to convert much pre-orders (probably some but not overwhelming). This one should be interesting to watch.

I thought
at the end of the game
there was a 90 minute cut-scene, as a
proper fare-well to Snake
. That doesn't seem to me out of place, to be honest. First of all, you've
finished
the game and you don't have to watch the cut-scene, second, cut-scenes can be skipped, and third,
Snake deserves
those 90 minutes ;) ...

Aye, that's another logical point to insert a fan service :)
Someone commented that MGS3 has a long ending too. Were there alternate endings in MGS series ?

Apparently MGS4 has
got us to the
point where
we are spoilering
everything to a
ridiculous degree :D
To be honest I'm glad that
we are
over
spoilering
rather than under
spoilering
just in
case someone
lets
slip a biggie
. It's just
funny seeing sentences
broken up by plenty of
spoilers
.

PS This post is 100% spoiler-free :D

Only MGS has two endings.
If you give in to Ocelot's torture, Meryl dies a the end. If you dont, she lives.
All MGS's have long endings. With a long cutscene before the final boss fight and a long cutscene after it. All put together its around an hour cutscene's and a little gameplay.

Isn't that pretty standard for big Japanese games though? FFX etc. have extended cutscenes towards the end, with lots of waffle interspersed with snippets of gameplay.
