Edge gave it a 8/10

- Opening act is the best part
- Not a game for MGS outsiders
- two cut-scenes near the 90 minute mark
- The Beauty and the Beast Unit are in the shadow of the MGS3 Cobra Unit.
- Camera flow effortless between 1st and 3rd person view
- Control system has "at last" the ideal balance of intuitvness and range.
- Game can be played for months rather than days.
- MGS4 is not the game it could of been, nor the game it should have been if you believed the early trailers (??)
- But is very faithful to its fans and delivers without equal in so many ways.

They gave MGS2 8/10 and i think 7/10 to MGS3.

I was new to the GTA series with GTA4 and would be to MGS with MGS4. Based on that, ridiculous long cut scenes are total turn off. I can see the diehards loving this but for me, jumping in, that's a bit much. Yes, I know I can skip them but then it's just another game right?

I'm actually the exact opposite - especially if I can just skip them and watch them later. Too many games these days have watered down story lines that just don't make sense. If the cut scenes are any indication, there will actually be a story in MGS4. That and it is the equivalent of getting a feature length film and a game for the same price. One of the things I loved about Devil May Cry is you could sit down and watch the cut scenes through one after another and actually get a decent story out of it.

I can see how it would be a turn off for some, but for me it will probably have me buying the first MGS game I've ever bought.

Just another potentially awesome game.

Personally I was new to MGS2 and I didn't think my experience was in any way diminished because I hadn't played MGS first.

I think you mite have had a better experience with MGS2 than some, due to not having come for MGS1. At least you wouldnt have been pissed off with playing as raiden as much!

If you're still concerned, you could do what I am - I've been replaying MGS2 and MGS3. If that sounds like too much to do between now and June 12, complete playthroughs with all cutscenes are on YouTube, and there are plenty of short walkthroughs which will give you all the backstory.

That's a damn good suggestion.

I felt GTA4 was dragging on after a while. I'll wait till the game is out for a while and wait on feedback from general gamers and not die hard MGS fans.

You are in for a real treat when you do finnaly do get round to playing it!
The cutscenes may seem like a turn off when you here about them but im pretty sure you'll change your mind once you experience it. Going into it with no previous experience of MGS may be a good thing, theres a good chance you'll be blown away by it even more than most if your not realy sure what to expect from it. I actualy envy you in some respects. MGS1 being my first will always have a place in my heart. Even though it may not be the best in the series technically, it is to me.
I wouldnt worry about not being interested in the story because your new, each one in the series has been prety self-contained. Dont forget even MGS1 was not the first in the whole metal gear series and was many peoples first metal gear they had played, i dont think not playing any of the previous game detracted from the experience one bit. The references to the other games only ADDs to the experience, it doesnt detract from it.

I would hope you can at least pause the movie and save the game. life is way too hectic to sit through that twice just to play a game.

of course reading the IGN UK review it says all cut scenes can be skipped but you miss good story points.

Haha, as usual, I think the issue is overblown. If the reviewer in GAF is correct, it may mean that the 90 minute cutscenes are optional (hence, he did not see them even after 2 playthroughs). They may be Kojima fan services, and meant to be taken in a positive way (more sidestories ?).

I just saw the Edge May article on MGS4, the author mentioned that there are a lot of depth and undiscovered elements in the game. He actually highlighted my top question (Whether the customizable weapon library affect gameplay significantly) as one of them -- No one knows yet. As another example, I heard there is also a Sunny cam where you can watch the girl's daily routine while you executed your mission (Perhaps like how I sometimes wonder about my kid's whereabout when abroad). I have no idea whether this is true or not.

However, the Kojima team are full of smart people. I just don't think they will alienate the gamers in their lead game. They may however experiment with gameplay structures (as hinted by the Eurogamer review). Also, based on the Edge review, I suspect there may be more indoor stealth levels (like old MGS games). But I could be wrong.

I just gave a better look to the Eurogamer review and I must say that it is the most confusing review I ve ever read.

Nesh, I read in GAF that the Eurogamer reviewer is not the same one they sent to attend the MGS4 3-day "game review" event. If this is true, he may not have enough time to explore the game fully, and may in fact face more stringent time pressure (He seems to be the only one hinting at repetition because time is of essence to him). I have no way to verify this though. This is the net afterall. So please, please take this with a grain of salt.

In any case, I like the Edge MGS4 article (in May 2008 issue) where they go more in-depth to talk about Kojima's inner mind and some postmortem. I need to find the Edge review article. I suspect it may be a better read.

The problem still exists. What if you're interrupted 45 minutes into a cutscene and have to stop playing? Is there a way to stop the game and start back up where you left off, or would you have to watch either that 45 minutes of cutscene again, or skip the whole lot? They need a little video player with a timeline where you can select the bit you want to watch. Extended cutscene have caught me out in Japanese games plenty enough times for me to hate them, being 'forced' to keep/playing watching because there's no suitable interrupt system that allows me to choose when and what I'm going to watch. All or nothing cutscene skippage isn't a decent option in this day and age.

And yes, we should have an option to stop in a cutscene and continue later. I have missed dinners because a cutscene would start and won't end for half an hour. I do love those cutscenes and they should remain, but if I am off to bed and a cutscene starts then I should be able to stop and have the liberty to watch it some other day!

Also, why are the cutscenes not available in the main menu after we have seen it??
in MGS3 only the mission briefing is open for viewing pleasure ?!?!?!

Huh? All cutscenes are available for viewing after completing MGS3....and there were optional ones depending on your choices in the game (which makes me think there are similar in MGS4)

What?!?!? How come my game has only The briefing and Virtuous mission available?!?!? What is wrong with my disks?!? And what choices? Did I miss it? Maybe I didn't know there were any choices?
Please, tell me where the choices existed? Damn ! My life is ruined!

haha calm down. I didn't realise there were more cutscenes until I was scrolling through the cutscenes and there were blacked out ones...still haven't seen them. :LOL:When you finish MGS3 there should be a gallery where Snake walks over the cutscene images to select them...

Most choices are simply a matter of how you defeat some of the bosses. You'll get a slightly different cutscene after the boss fights.
