LOTR: Return of the King.

Don't wanna spoil anything, but since Christopher Lee is not in ROTK, I guess the part where Sauroman and wormtongue go to the shire and "do what they do" (and "what happens" to Sauroman afterwards) is not in the movie then ... Hope they put it in the extended version...

Just got back too. The composition was a bit ropey at times and there were too many endings. It's a shame more of the leading characters didn't die and there are only so many times you can hear that friggin' title motif!

;););)

MuFu.

I think they were limited by who died in the books-- if they were trying to be at all faithful they can't kill off too many who were supposed to live.

Hehe, yeah I'm clutching at straws. It was 3.5 hours very well spent. :)

Errr, everything but the end felt rushed. The end could have ended in about 5 minutes, instead of the 20 it took.
Errr, they could have ended it much faster than that even, they just didn't. Arguing this is rather pointless as its personal opinion, but I felt the first 2 hours of the movie were mostly paced in an adequate way considering the complexity of the tale, the scope of time and mind numbing amount of events and scenes covered.

Maybe it would have been better to leave a few of the scenes that were more of a nod to fans of the books out and have some more exposition or a better sense of the passing of time instead, but for the most part it worked for me. The film really starts pacing ahead at a gruesome haste once the battle for Minas Tirith draws to conclusion though. Also, the "hike" to the black gate/mount doom really felt like a field trip in school rather than an epic and perilious journey. In comparison passing Minas Morgul and the ascension of the stairs took literally forever. But I have high hopes that there's alot of material coming for that particluar part in the EE... ;)

As for the ending, I was very surprised they took the time for that, and I agree that after the rushed climax of the movie, the long and drawn out ending really felt a bit awkward (and had too many close-ups of Frodo). It might have been better to cut some of it and spend the time won to tighten up the overall pace of the movie in other places, but I must say that it nicely bends the whole arc back to the beginning of The Fellowship and helps mold everything into the one big story it really is. They went through so many different cuts before they finally arrived at this one that they probably know best what might work for the audience and what not.

Point in case: a co-worker of my girlfriend apparently watched the movie tuesday night (got tickets for the midnight premiere off ebay for 2 Euros, argh!), she had neither read the books nor seen the first two movies, but she immensely enjoyed the movie and especially loved the ending... <shrug>

I can't believe Frodo never passionately kissed Sam... there were so many opportunities!

 Now now.... If they put some action in there, it should have been Aragorn-Legolas... Now THAT's something i'd love to see
Although i'm not sure how the fans would react to such a "derailment" from the original storyline...

Oh, i was thinking, like any other MAJOR movie out there, i guess there will be a porn-spoof... Like there was with Tittanic, Sperminator... I expect to see many Lord of the [put name here] in the very near future

(i know it's a bit off-topic, but what the hell this is my thread :D )

No way, Gimli's got to get some screen time in there somewhere, to appeal to the "bear lovers" of the world.

(not that I'm advocating that for personal reasons. just being silly.)

HUH HUH Russ whatever you say... j/k...

Personally, i find that gross... Rather see the human soldiers getting down to it... I mean, think about it, with their technology they could render the biggest orgy scene ever!!!

I think it is going to be movie of the year.

Funny enough though, Cold Mountain got 8 Golden Globe nominations, while ROTK "only" got 4... The fact that all the leading actors in Cold Mountain got a nomination each helped it (Nic Kidman, Renee Zellweger-sp?- and thingy, whats his face, oh, Jude Law each got nominated)

I think it will win best movie , best director and best special effects at the oscars.

because the oscars are bs . Rotk could have been the worse movie ever but because the first two deserved to win they will give it to the 3rd one. The same with peter jackson he deserved to win twice but the awards went to other directors that should have won in the past but were looked over because someone else was due to win because they were looked over. Thats how it works

Just saw it today. You truly get out of there feeling like you just went through a hurricane. The scale and grandiose nature of the movie is truly impressive.

Easily the greatest war movie of our times, even though it was meant to be fantasy.

I like how he stayed faithful to the books at the end. He could have ended it happily at the shire, or with Frodo and Sam dying on the lava for martyr effect. Instead he added the extra scene at the docks in the end for fidelity, well worth it IMO.

He could have cut a few parts when they were at the shire (beer scene, etc), and some of the speech at Minas Tirath.

To be picky, I felt that they cut Aragorn/Arowyn's story a bit thin. It left me wanting something more. She is afterall, sacrificing much.

Still it would be a crime not to have this film win best Oscar. It puts the other movies to shame.

Awesome movie. I was left wanting more, even though I know the story does not continue. I can't wait for the extended version of the DVD.

re: the hobbit. PJ said in a recent interview (sorry, can't remember where) that Newline have the rights to do a movie version, although they haven't approached him about it yet. He did say it would be "strange" not to be involved though.

And assuming that they would like Ian Holm/Mckellen involved, I hope they get a move on!

Maybe after PJ's done with the King Kong remake...

As a complete aside: I just learned the other day that my second cousin (mother's cousin's son) supplied the voice for the Orc Commander in ROTK.

WOW!!! i mean, COOL!!!

seen it last night.......... O H M Y G O D......

AMAZING. I agree with the comments on the length, i mean the movie "ended" like 5 times if u know what i mean, and everytime there would be a 3-4 second break and then off with another scene!!

All in all, AMAZING, BEST TRILOGY ever made,, by far. And can i say, LOVING the girl power scenes...

Always thought, the story has always been "sexist" as in, "they're all frikkin men!!". Like, even the game, 87 selectable characters, not one is a woman. I mean it's a minor thing, but it did stick to my mind...

I was a little pissed at the girl power crap. Its not in the book. If i wrote a book all about girl power and someone through in a guy kicking ass you could bet i'd be rolling in my grave.

Girls don't need to kick ass or be important in every movie .
