So this is probably the last game to show off the system like gow2 on ps2. Or maybe gow4

Naughty Dogs Swansong for the PS3.

Considering they started with Uncharted and look to be finishing with Last of Us they must be in contention for the best first party developer this gen and perhaps the best developer overall?

More on the improved lighting, it's actually pretty obvious to me from that cutscene where I can instantly tell the lighting feels more natural.
Even at this early stage, The Last of Us is gorgeous. A city overgrown with vines and weeds is as lush as you'd expect from the makers of Uncharted. They've beefed up the lighting, building on Uncharted's already stellar engine to include more ambient sources and softer lighting, making the world feel richer and more realistic. I saw gorgeous afternoon sunlight shimmer through windows in the ruined town, with just enough light bouncing off the floors to illuminate rooms in a world where electricity is no longer available.

Well if that's true then it looks pretty good, though looking again at the trailer, the anti-aliasing is too perfect. Calling BS on it.
Well, with 8 ps3 you can get 8xSSAA rendered real time with proper motion blur using accumulation buffer. (using their 8xPS3 render farm.)
Add post process AA within each rendered sub-frame and you have quite good AA and image quality.

More on the engine improvements.
Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley from Naughty Dog. The pair mentioned that the first gameplay demo that was shown to the press recently was actually an old build from January. They are currently “pushing a lot more environments” with the newer build. The lighting engine from Uncharted has evolved in The Last of Us as Naughty Dog is going with the more ambient approach (because the environments in The Last of Us have no electricity). Finally, they mentioned that they are trying to ground players into the same reality as Ellie, Joel and the hunters by reinforcing the art direction, lighting engine, rendering style and textures.

I do wonder what kind of "a lot more environments" do they mean? As in more polygons?
Also I feel like they have some kind of dynamic GI going on by the sound of it.

I believe the footage to be ingame, as in : rendered realtime on a ps3: you can see a lot of blurry textures and with the city shot you see a lot of foliage artifacting.
If that is pre-rendered then they have the worst renderer ever :D

Still, this footage looks even better than U3 horse sequence or desert combat.
People who say that U3 is not the best graphics of the generation might actually be right this time... ;-)

Nobody attains hardware performance like Naughty Dog ...

They are a huge ace up Sony's sleeve. If only Sony could replicate these guys 10 fold!

Truly industry leading work.

I wonder what these guys could've achieved with cell2.0 and a proper dx11 gpu ...

These guys are unmatched in their commitment to excellence and to their craft.

I can't wait to play this!

E3 is gonna be spectacular with TLOU, GOWA and Quantic Dream's new game, for a graphics whore like me:).

I'm looking forward to it as well. I think game developers have a knack for teaching old hardware new tricks and we've already seen impressive stuff ahead of E3 like GOWA multiplayer and the Kara demo. According to a recent industrygamer roundtable the PS3 in particular still has the potential for further performance gains, although perhaps this will be overshadowed by the Wii U launch.
