Kojima MGS4 PS3 Devkit TGS show Fansubbed!

Here’s a small snippet from a recent EGM interview, Anyhow there hoping to do real-time whisker shaving (minigame?) if time permits.

EGM: We were wondering if Snake's beard grew in real time and you had to shave it in a minigame?

HK: We actually first had that idea for MGS 2, but we weren't able to do real-time whisker shaving. So this time we also want to include that...hopefully we'll be able to get it in the final game. Also we'd like Snake's face to look older and to show realistic expressions of fatigue as he goes through the game. Well I told my team that, and they said, "Please, we don't want to have to do that." We're not sure what's going to happen with that.

This was news to me:

"So we use the CPU to apply filters that tarnish the screen further"

Is that translation accurate?

They're using Cell to post-process the framebuffer? I certainly wouldn't have expected to see such usage so soon, particularly with bw between Cell and the GPU in the dev kits being so low.

edit - duh, it's one's translation. of course it's accurate ;) Thanks for the vid, a job well done :)

Great work Good Metalgearih and One. It is very much appreciated and I am still completely blown away by the detail and speed they managed to get so "soon" with this demo. I am probably going to end up in a puddle of my own drool once I get my hands on the final game. "whaa....imposs...can't...gahh...jeee.....*faints*"

BTW, anyone else think the woman interviewing the dev team sounds bit funny? I can only imagine that she was well impressed and a fan of the series. She sounds orgasmic at points. heh.

Great work

I made this video after 2-3 weeks of quality checking and text to audio synching with the help of my friend One here at B3D. The sole reason of this joint project was to help Metalgear series fans to enjoy the most from Kojima and teams efforts. Sorry One, posted it before you. You deserve equal credit no doubt!

This video is the 9min PS3 development kit exhibition from Kojima-san and staff(Takabe-san and Shinkawa-san) at TGS 2005. Where they openly demonstrated and proved that the breathtaking MGS4 trailer was indeed realtime off the unfinished PS3 Dev Kit. In this fansub video you'll see the Kojima team enjoying the demo, pausing, zooming, rotating etc while playing with it. Enjoy.

Please be thankful instead of saying this is nothing new. Or don't bother sharing your post!

thanks, it is a great idea.

You guys, Metalgearih and One, did an awesome job with this! Thanks a lot!:D

Whoever said the impact of MGS4 was not as great as MGS2 wrt to its time... is sorely wrong in my view.

Actually I dont think its fair to compare this to the famous MGS2 E3 trailer. This preview striked me as a parallel to MGS2's first tease at TGS 2000. The real knock you on your ass MGS4 trailer will be at next years E3. And the show likely stolen as par for the course. ;)

The hair physics simulation I guess is the reason why the animation looks so suble and real.
People were comparing this trailer to the canned animation in ATI's "Ruby" demo but I guess that isn't the same if the CPU is calculating real physics.

Thanks a lot and 2 quick things: I have just spread the love around my usual Spanish community, so all the fans over there can enjoy your work. And the other thing.. are you big SotC fans? Because that watch impress article on the tech behind SotC looks yummy ;)

Thanks guys.superb video :D

Thew only think I didnt like in that demonstartion is that only the character's shadow changed angle while every other shadow in the backround remained stable.

Ofcourse I am expecting that kojima will improve this since he and his team created such a splendid demonstration in such a small period of time using their own engine

That was honestly one of the most impressive if not the most impressive next-gen demonstration I've seen yet! Truly spectacular what they've achieved so far with Snakes character model! Can't wait to see what it looks like futher in development.

So Titanio or Vysez what does this mean? I know people here have been discussing things that the CELL chip can do for graphics so that's why I'm asking.

Comparing what some people have been assuming about what the CPU can do for the graphics how much does this "post-process the framebuffer" and to that discussion?

Thanks.

Are the lights baked in or is it simply because it's a non-unified lighting system??

From what the demo states “Yeah. Well, actually we do lighting to each frame in this demo”. Guessing from that statement “the lighting” is very independent from the last one. Meaning no unified lighting system!?! Sounds like Global illumination to me…but I could be wrong. Start from 07:49 of the video you'll see some indication that it might be in use...like I said I'm not sure!?!

I'll believe it when somebody picks up the controller and plays it. Not pans around.

Besides, there is no such thing as a PS3, so who cares? It was running on SLI GTX's in a high end PC, I dont care what you guys say.
