Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

I'm not sure if it's working.

I dunno man. There's a media thread over at GAF that was created sometime in November, and it's on pace to surpass the MGS4 thread in post count. I know that doesn't necessarily account for much, but to me, when the first 1K posts in the MGS4 thread are "wow awesome OP" it kind of means a lot.

I think once the game starts getting ads on TV (hopefully tagged with "actual gameplay footage") it will start to generate more buzz. But in order for Sony to really put KZ2 on the map, they will have to seriously put some "public eye" on it.

That, and it needs to be favorably reviewed by Game Informer magazine to GameStop groupies give it the two thumbs up (still it's unlikely considering PS3 is usually the anti-christ at Gamestop locales).

Usually there are retail review copies - but often much nearer release. Killzone 2 was the exception. Sony are trying a kind of viral marketing to get journo impressions on the net. They know how good it is.

all the copies i have ever recieved have allways said "PROMOTIONAL COPY" in a yellow banner throughout the cover, everything else being black and white. The DVD would also be gray.

Never heard of "retail review copies" the year or two i reviewed games.

I used to room with Bryan Dawson (he may still work with GameDaily, not sure) and I saw many retail copies go through his house. Though the ones who generally sent the retail copies for review were Namco and Konami. Smaller companies usually sent DVD-R's for his Debut PS2/Xbox (this was pre-360/PS3/Wii).

I'm sure location also has a lot to do with it (working with NA/EU/JPN divisions of said companies).

I think it is amongst those "in the know" or more informed gamers. I'm not sure about the general buying public that you need to drive big sales....
Isn't that true of pretty much every game? In the months and years leading up to release, the only people who know are those who follow it in the gaming media. The Mass Public are only informed when advertising goes out to the mainstream media. Lots of people had no idea LBP existed until they saw the creation adverts on TV. As far as pre-mainstream hype is concerned, I think KZ2 has managed to find itself onto a pedestal as high as any game, ready to fall off with a bang ;). How much of that translates into actual sales, noo-ne can predict. Games publishers hate that, but it's true - the market is fickle!

TV ads are very important in my opinion, and will be particularly for this game if Sony want it to reach the heights and drive the sales they're aiming for.

Some companies do without them, but often I think the success of a game could have been a lot better given good TV coverage.

That's not true. There were limited copies that would play on retail PS3s. Plenty of debug review copies. Sony has run out of copies playable on retail PS3's until closer to release.

ofcourse its true, you allegedly have one, MU gamers have one, a lot of piss poor sites that dont get ranked in gamerankings apparently have one. They must be throwing out copies.

I thought all review copies only ran on debug units.

Only titles that are really struggeling to meet a deadline and give reviewers unfinished code to review on uses debug units.

To me it just sounds like a bunch of little boys/nerds with no girlfirends who hang out at GAF drooling at the newest and greatest just so they can be on the bandwagon and feel special. I doubt even 50% of the people in that thread will go out and buy the game at launch.

For the record, I think the game looks phenomenal. The attention to detail is staggering and the artsyle is very cool and not cheesy. I've been watching the HD videos of the game over and over again because it's just jaw dropping but the sad thing is even that is not enough for me to go and buy the game AND a PS3 to play it. It WILL be the first game I buy when I get a PS3 though which likely won't happen until end of 2009 or beginning of 2010.

If Sony wants to sell millions of copies of this game they need to show the actual gameplay in the tv commercials instead of some stupid cutscene trailer.

Really?

None of my friends ever even heard of Killzone 1 or 2. I really dont think there is any hype around KZ2 from regular gamers right now, far to few have even heard about it.

If you go to gaming websites or bought gaming magazines you'd know about Killzone 2. The enthusiasts know about it, certainly. I'm not sure what their plans are to reach the rest of gamers. Maybe they're relying on the demo, though they're releasing it a bit late.

Well there's three types. Ones that play only on debug consoles.

Ones that play on retail consoles but have "promo copy" written over them (I mean this when I say retail)

But then there's also actual retail discs in retail box.

Here is the link to the killzone Video, just in case anyone doesn't want to use the built in browser flash player and use their own player to make shots

http://video2.gamekings.nl/20090120-Killzone2-special-full.flv

246MB, use with caution :p

Addon:
Shit, I just noticed that they added wind effects to projectiles (like grenades) and the player themselves.
An addin that I don't think I've seen in other FPS or TPSs. Very interesting.

What program can I use to open this file?

I've d/l ffdshow but it still doesnt play in WMP.

Do a search for "flv player" or just use vlc if you've got that ('tho ff/fr hasn't worked with flv files via vlc when I've tried them before).

I'd be willing to bet there are a large group of people on GAF who are middle aged, have great jobs, and are married. You must not post on GAF much...

Either way, you're ridiculous generalization about gamers on GAF is rather ridiculous and unwarranted..

Anyone who I have ever shown KZ2 is always astonished and excited to play it.

Ostepop - Sooo...because no one you know has heard about it, that translates to ... what? I think the advertisements lathered in Gamestops and BestBuys, along side Demo promo codes being tossed around will build more than enough hype. The game looks good enough for a short 10 second video to sell a pre-order to any PS3 owner who bought CoD4.

For the record, if they really wanted to get Killzone 2 notice a TV ad on the Super Bowl is their best bet. Although Super Bowl commercials are not cheap, I believe it will pay off. Millions of Americans will be watching of course. Just show the "Ballet of Death" and their set.

I'm really worried about that: it seems the preview build slown in rare moments but when it did the game became unplayable. Different reviewers who I know said that. I hope it's just a preview code problem but for me it's a little disappointing.

spot and mark ability seems overpowered..

atleast to me it remind me a lot like the GRAW drone thingy. Being able to see where the enemies are on a map with exact locations is very very very powerful. Atleast i ccould do some fantastic things on graw when i had the drone.
