Killzone 2 pre-release discussion thread

Because its easier to make offline renderings?

Its not like Killzone2 is the first game to use cg cutscenes. Its easier and cheaper than getting the same result in realtime (if realtime is at all possible), streaming video instead of realtime cutscenes allso allows for faster loading.

Actually, I'd guess that CG intro is somewhere around $0.5-1.5 million ... not exactly cheaper, but kinda easier to do cuts and zooms and transitions. We'll see about the quality difference when we have direct feed HD stuff.

The ingame parts look awesome though. They've really got it together.

For as well done as it is, the soldier dialogue seems to be kind of juvenile to me. The expletives seem really out of place.

Ha ha... not according to a foreign army I worked with for 1.5-2 years. Some of the troopers talked like that. It's like part of the grammar. >_< (or may be punctuation).

I was hoping for a more handsome/charismatic Visari (like Sean Connery !), but guess not :(

Great intro but animation especially facial animation is pretty poor for a CGI, at least what I expect from a decent CGI in this day and age. Also some of the soldiers in the background look like sprite copies in terms of both animation and model. I sure hope they didn't pay $1.5M for that.

I also hear there is significant loading between each level, surely thanks to realtime cutscenes.
Prerendered FTW. :)

Great speech from Scolar Visari though, I must say.

As someone who has been deployed with the Army, I can tell you that it's not uncommon to hear every other sentence to contain some kind of expletive.

From my experience, sometimes you even have to express an expletive to be understood. For example "go and pick up that crate" - no reaction; "Go and pick up that F'in crate" - "Yes sir":)

Not to derail, but Gears dialogue seems to hit the right mix of humour and expression that is common in the military.

The vid is pretty impressive, if it is an indicator of the rest of the games quality and production value, then Sony has a hit on there hands.

Edit: Not to imply that I'm with the Army

It's not the expletives themselves that bothered me, it was their placement. For instance, the first "fuck you" seemed so delayed and artificial (perhaps it's due to the camera placement, but it even sounded different and lacked the "yelling in a busy environment" feel that the prior lines had) that I felt like it was inserted after the other lines were already in place.

I thought it looked a little off but whatever :)

Have you joined a clan yet. GAF is signing up now !
Hope to run into you again like in R1. That was a pleasant surprise.

Meanwhile I'm still trying to level up in R2 (Am level 18 in competitive now).

Can you join a clan already? Damn, didn't know that.

I myself will probably be playing with my R2 clansmen if I play at all.

Honestly though, I'm afraid K2 will be a great concept that's not really suitable for "popular" online gaming. The vibe it gives me is that it may be too complex for console players. More importantly though, the gameplay, if anything like CoD4, may not be so suitable for lag hiding, thus skill based battles. Not to mention, seemingly slow controls.

If only you've opened up your party. :|
I won't trash talk I promise. ;)

We played against each other in R2 but you probably hadn't noticed (I generally don't because of the red font background). One was CC the other was TDM. You had spec op helmet and were sniping in TDM. Were pretty good at it too, I should add. I probably had the grim skin at that time if you ever encountered any.

I do play R2 a lot. It's actually the only game I play. However I play closed custom games (gb rules) with buddies (all k/d > 2.0) nowadays, otherwise there is little challenge when you have a big party. Funny thing is big parties sucked in R1, too, but I'd (almost) never played custom games in R1. I do find it awesome now.

"Kids" are just starting out early because clan size limit is said to be 128 (GAF is a big group :().

Very possible ! I like Resistance's lag free and fast gameplay. Hanging out with the old R1 clan was fun though. I'd probably split my time between the two.

Ha ha, I hate to disrupt current game and go open the party (Don't know how to do it). And after a round, I usually had to check my computer screen for work-related output. :p

I thought I caught a glimpse of your nick somewhere.

I still s*ck at the game. K/D lower than one, partly because I am training to use FarEye. I alternate between Auger and the sniper rifle (if I can find both). Sometimes I freelance using Carbine. :)

I think people overestimate the stupidity of most gamers.

Few great concepts are to complex for most gamers, however a lot of great concepts sadly get ruined because the game doesn't manage to explain the concept to the player in a fun and easy way to understand. I know a few games have so unintuitive controlls some of my friends instantly give up on it, but if they are convinced to sit down and learn the controlls they really enjoy it.

Doesn't KZ2 have dedicated servers? Hope so, Resistance is amazing when it comes to lag etc.

If not yikes, hope they have a good netcode (so far i have not seen that, the only mp footage ive seen indicated lag (video of a guy running around with a sniper rifle in this thread somewhere)

CoD4 is often a laggy affair, and its a game where lag can make or break the game. lets hope KZ2 mp will be a lag free environment

Slow controls is a bummer but i dont think slow controlls eliminate skill based battles, just different skills come into play.. i hope you can still fix sensitivity to something equal cod4 - 10 "very high" setting.

I'll probably do same if K2 MP is any fun, and R2 community stays strong.

Yep, you clearly don't. You cannot change party options in game. ;)

Hehe, I was messing with you. I do the same often BTW.

I only spawn with Auger when I'm defending. Likewise I only spawn with Carbine when I'm attacking in CC, or sometimes in Skirmish. Otherwise I spawn with Bullseye or Marksman or rarely with Far Eye depending on the openness of the map. I can tell you for sure though, the highest k/d players are snipers as to be expected.

I wasn't talking about the controls though. I'm sure people will get used to them however complex they are. I meant the whole role based teamplay with level system.

CoD4 like game would still be affected by lag even if it was using dedicated servers. Almost all kills take fraction of a second thus making the whole lag hiding difficult.
Of course they couldn't effort dedicated servers, or even better net code, so we had to live with even more lag, host quits and host advantage (though for some reason people didn't complain).

I was so pissed off, at some point, I had to write a simple script on my router to force my ps3 to host. Needless to say, the game became very easy after that.

Neither do I. I just mentioned it because of my personal preference, nothing more.
It may even be fun.

Making of Killzone video, english subtitles
18": shows some PS3 devkit benchmarks on screen and talks about SPU use cases
21": characters react to each bullet and animations blend together
23": bullets leave marks to environments, each gun has own "fingerprint"
24": lightning demo, hundreds of light sources

Yes (on a good day) for CC, Skirmish and TDM ! I don't know why but in Deathmatches, I often spawned with other folks nearby. Having a FarEye became a serious liability. In which case (and in some Core Control games), I practice close range sniping :D

someone needs to update the dutch dictionary.

Surely there are dutch words for engineer, engineering and repair (amongst other englishs words used throughout the video)

Enough with the Resistance 2 talk already!

Just bought it myself really liking it so far, the revolver is my fav gun ever!

Heh, I forgot this is a KZ2 thread.

DJ12's video interview is fascinating ! There is a slight spoiler though (One of the interviewees told us what the last level is/has).

I recommend watching it regardless. Lot's of details and background info.

Whatever float your boat !

After watching the interview, I have a better sense of what to appreciate in the game ^_^ (Things that I most likely will miss during playthrough).
