Japan Sales Thread

Japan is not the same like before. But you can always count on FF, DQ and GT to move hardware at specific points of the year, especially if they become bundle. The PS3 will see massive sale spikes with FFXIII and GT5 releases. Wii will had MG2 next year. Don't know about the 360. Sony's portfolio for Japan will see the biggest boosts.

We've heard that before, hasn't really worked out. PS3 was supposed to see a big boost for the FF13 demo too. While I guess it did get a boost, it's didn't amount to much in the grand scheme of things. PS3 is still selling about like Gamecube did in Japan so far this generation, to put it in perspective.

Of course the Wii isn't tearing it up so much in Japan these days either. It's falling well behind the PS2 trajectory of late,

Looking at YTD numbers, I'm really surprised at the momentum PSP has gained recently. As I stated before, PSP appeared headed in the direction of being a failure just a couple years ago. Now it's approaching NDS numbers.

Amazing turnaround.

In Japan. It's strange the success hasnt transferred to the west yet.

I mean the DS only became a phenomenon in Japan first, then spread. It's strange that so far the same hasnt happened with the PSP's Japanese surge.

In Japan. It's strange the success hasnt transferred to the west yet.

The West doesn't yet have a Monster Hunter driving PSP sales, but it did have publisher skepticism over piracy, meaning fewer games and less customer interest. Sony have been working (largely successfully) to combat piracy on PSP and get publishers back on board, and are getting their biggest franchises on the system.

We will only see in a year or so what effect the introduction of LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm, Assassin's Creed, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, and of course the next game in the MGS canon has on PSP sales in the West, alongside the PSP Go.

Depressing console sales as usual. I had heard here from someone that PS3s were going out of stock, but I sort of doubt it. Dry spell for releases means not many console sales. 360's holding up well considering it's not getting anything either.

Mostly interested in Infinite Line: hopefully it can stick around for a while. Talk is that it was severely undershipped and sold 90% of stock on the first day.

Wow, 360 is really doing comparatively well though.

The YoY stats looked like this through week 23. this was founded at GAF.

Through the first twenty-three weeks of the year, overall sales are down. However, the systems can be split into camps of 3 up and 3 down. Here's how the year-to-date year-over-year percents stand as of now.

Wii: -64.0%
DSL+DSi: +2.2%
PS2: -49.7%
PS3: +27.5%
PSP: -44.7%
X360: +233.6%

Another year of significant improvements and 360 could be a player (I think it already is a fringe player at this time)

I doubt it. 360 has found a niche for a certain type of games but I think there's still a cultural resistance to a videogame console from America, and I don't think this will change next-gen. 360 has actually matched the PS3 in Europe and overcome resistance there, but in Japan they just don't care, and this despite the fact that the 360 got a whole bunch of high-profile games!

Well thats all well and good and I dont disagree, but the sales do. Xbox has made great headway, although going from "almost nothing" to "a little bit" isn't that meaningful.

Frequently selling near 50% of PS3 weekly is very impressive imo.

And it's been said before but the difference between 360 and original Xbox over there is night and day. On a weekly 360 has been doing 5-10X what Xbox 1 was (Xbox 1 sold much better on launch shipment, but it's weekly sales from then on were horrendous, usually in the hundreds).

And also, 360's games releases have dryed up for a few months. Yet it has still stayed "strong" in hardware. "Strong" by dying Japanes home console+ Xbox standards of course.

I dont believe Xbox has overcome cultural resistance in EU either. It's just that, EU was always somewhere between the USA and Japan on the Resistance factor, and it able to be overcome when you have an extreme price difference. 360 still sells nearly on par with PS3 in Europe despite being half the price. Or to show it another way, PS3 has sold more in Europe than USA, whereas 360 has sold almost double in USA as Europe.

I'm sure the resistance factor is being reduced over time as 360 makes inroads due to pricing, but it's still quite strong, or you might call it Europeans just being more comfortable with Playstation.

This again? You can't use the word impressive for these ridiculously bad sales. If the PS3 drops to 1000 and the 360 to 800, is it a huge triumph that the 360 is doing 80% of the PS3's sales? Just because the PS3 fails doesn't mean the 360 triumphs. This applies to Wii vs. PS3, by the way.

No doubt, they're improving, but I think they're really far from being a player, not unless we expect the Japanese market to be this bad forever, at which point it won't matter. Publishers will target the western market or portables.

Though are pretty low standards. 5k-6k isn't strong no matter what standards you use.

I don't think it has entirely, but I think Europeans have realized 'oh wait, the games I want to play I can get on the console that's half the price? I'm there'. In Japan the 360 is the only platform fans can play a bunch of games and still they won't bite. Yeah, a price-cut would probably push the momentum heavily in the PS3's direction.

Yeah but all 3 consoles are doing poorly in Japan. So thats all we can look at. If one was a success or something and 2 were selling very bad, it might be different. But it's not.

And yes we all know Japan has a strong resistance to foreign hardware. Thats why I'm surprised 360 has the (weak) traction it does! It seems their resistance wasn't as impenetrable as I thought, and they are at least a little more open to foreign consoles than I thought.

Maybe, we Europeans, are just less price sensitive? The PS3 didn't sell significantly more expensive than what the PS2 cost on launch day. I know the American consumers draw a wider distinction between 299 USD and 399, let alone 499 or 599, but it's pretty much what we've been paying all along.

In fact, it makes the X360 a bargain overhere.

Hypothetically, if the 360 got another 230% increase next year, as it did this year, it would outsell at least one of its two competitors. So it has indeed improved by a lot in Japan.

Sure, that's exactly what it means, but I don't think that outcome is particularly likely. There's absolutely no reason to believe that 360 sales will continue to increase while everything else decreases. Hell, 2009 doesn't even have the deluge of announced JRPGs so far.

It's so easy to mislead with statistics, you should go back and figure out how they got that number, it is misleading and that is why it is repeated so often on forums.

If Wii and PS3 are selling poorly then you'll have to think up a new word for how 360 is selling. Looking at one week means nothing, look at it monthly, PS3 is selling three times what 360 does most months and Wii four or more times.

Also I'd say 8m sold is a success for the Wii so far. It might have slowed down a lot in recent times but the install base is already there and a big game or two can kick start it again.

Apparently Wii Sports Resort sold over 350k in just 4 days. Still, Wii numbers were, from first report, at only 21k -- barely any upswing at all.

360 is selling 60% of PS3 last few weeks..

Any recent monthly comparisons are skewed by the short lived FF13 demo burst for PS3.

The difference is 360 isn't EXPECTED to do ANYTHING in Japan, where PS3 and Wii are.

Wii=4X 360 and PS3=3X 360 is nothing short of massive, massive failure for those consoles, really. Last gen PS2 was probably selling 80X Xbox weekly.

There's no need to try to prove to me that Wii, or any other console in Japan, is currently selling poorly. I don't think any of them are selling well at the moment. My point is 360 is selling even worse then any other and I just don't see how you can categorize that as impressive.

Also while Wii isn't selling well at the moment its far from a failure overall.

And on a related note, DQ sold over 2 million copies in a couple of days, 3 million copies so far, 120-130k DS moved just last week.

The DS is just a monster in Japan. I swear every single kid there has one. Which means they must be selling them to aliens now. :p
