no , i'm freelance game artist and i know a lot of people at QD.All their graphical tech (whole engine ) is completly integrated in Maya so it's 100% artist driven.
Cool, working in QD must be like a dream for the artists. Can you somehow shed some lights on whether the lighting model has been changed since the taxidermist demo showcase? People have been calling downgrade and all though I still have my doubts.

The face is a little stiff. Heavenly Sword is still my all-time favorite for in-game acting. It's a little over the top, but very entertaining and engaging.
I wouldn't say Heavenly Sword's acting is over the top. Watching Fringe, I can spot a lot of similarity in the expressions and mannerisms of Nariko and Agent Dunham, even though Anna Torv is playing completely different types of characters and speaking with different accents. And Andy Serkis' performance was no more theatrical than I'm used to seeing from him. Okay, Steven Berkoff's performance was over the top, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Flying Fox is my favorite NPC of all video games.

Yeah , ithing HS and RE5 (not all the characters) are the top of what exists for the moment regarding facial animation.

I think i allready did that. If anything , they have more light types than during the taxidermist demo. And more features overall.
Keep in mind that the taxidermist was a finished scene , with the right level of polish and 30 fps locked. These last shown scenes are stil WIP.

Thanks for clearing it up, the club scene makes it even clearer now. It's a shame though that level wont make into the final game, I really liked the overall atmosphere.

I'm hoping it'll be released on PSN. It's stuff like that that I feel has been setting the PS Store apart from the XBLM. Enough people paid for Linger in Shadows, so I'm sure there are plenty who'd even be willing to shell out for The Taxidermist.

Heavenly Sword is very much like actors playing characters (they used their faces too) and you can tell their personal characters in the facial expressions. The facial animation is tops...still can't get over Stephen Berkoff being in that game! lol It didn't look like Quantic Dreams have bought facial animation motion capture - only full body capture. Seems a little odd...

You kidding me ? I would have dumped his nuts into the blender. Kai remains a strangely compelling secondary character for me. So FlyingFox just have to go. ^_^

I love Kai. It's the confrontations between she and FF that really made me love FF. The way he torments her just makes him a terrificly psychotic villain.

Altogether, I felt HS's story and cinemetics set the high water mark for this generation. I'm not expecting Heaven Rain to touch it (as its scope seems bigger), but I'd hope Quantic Dream at least strives for MGS4's production quality.

I sort of wonder if the FBI agent isn't a take on David Duchovny and his own lack of expressions.

Just saw the first junkyard vid and yeah, pretty stiff indeed. Its like the mouth is trying to compensate for the lack of movement of everything else on the face.

Still, loved Indigo Prophercy(sp) so hopefully its all a matter of polish. (and better framerate)

The animation in Heavy Rain does look pretty weak, I agree. I personally think they went with non-motion capped animation because it's too expensive for this type of game and because there is so much branching going on that they probably found it to complicated to work with as well. Take into consideration that this is reportedly a game with 60 little stories to tell, very little repetition will be possible, and it branches like mad. So they will have had to build on their previous work and make choices early, and also can't afford much rework in the course of development.

Sadly ,they actually have facial mocap.

Hmm, really? I mean I know they did in the teaser trailer, but I didn't know if that made it in (didn't seem like it). Well, we'll see - maybe we're just seeing too few animation frames or something at the moment.

Without trying to be funny. The game is far from release. When the game launches those things will be top tier atleast. You just play you're released games.;)

Actually some of it doesn't look as bad as I initially thought (gave it another critical look). However, I would be surprised if the animation improves a lot before release. Graphics and shading, sure, but the animation? Hmm.

Yeah, the black guy's expression is ok. It's the FBI agent. The short haired woman's expression is also a little too sterile, but not as bad as the agent's.

The black guy's animation doesn't bother me nearly as much as his voice and dialog.

That was the worst thing about the clip. The acting is atrocious.
Journalists should be up front about that with David Cage. Presumably, there's still over 6 months of development time left, so things could change if the criticism of that was loud and severe.

Quantic Dream’s famed mo-cap studio is launched the Motion Kit Collection, an “evolving library” of animations and captured motions.

Motion Kit Collection Vol 1 will feature 2 motion kit libraries (one for both sexes), each comprising 84 generic motion animations, which totals 2 X 7 linear minutes of animation data.

...

With each humanoid animation captured using Quantic’s 28-camera Vicon MX-F40 system, the motions can be used for building motion kits for both playable real-time characters and NPCs. Quantic has said this process will “reduce time and budget outlays for prototyping, pre and full productions.”

The animation package is available in .fbx format, which are linkable with 3D software pipelines such as MotionBuilder, Maya, 3DS Max or XSI.
