Has the console forum been axed?

I agree with many of the things said here. I've been following this site since the black bg, yellow font days and definitely stuck with it because of all the great knowledgable people. PC 3D technology was the thing that kept it fresh. Since DX9 3D technology has become a bit stagnant though, with nothing particularly exciting happening ever since the R300/NV30 times. During the past year or two, I moved more and more into the console forum, as it was more lively and there was more exciting new technology ahead.

There was a great deal of very good information to be found in the console forum. I sure hope it gets to be re-opened. The constant influx of new trolls certainly was a bit annoying, but overall there were stil many worthwhile discussions going on. There's got to be better solutions than simply deleting it...

Break it up into Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and hardware/games..

Keep everything that is "released" (PS2, XBOX, Cube and exclusive games etc) in the named sections. That should keep PS2 Phanboys and others seperated, and strike down hard on anyone crossing the line (ban from the manufactors forum!).

General console Hardware (tech difference etc) and Games talk on unreleased/next gen consoles and their games should be held in their respective forums. Any "ironic" or "sarcasm" post in those forums should be forbidden "yeah but what about AA ;) ". Only disussions based on technical arguments that most normal people couldn't understand should be allowed, yeah that includes me and 95% of the other people that comes to this place to get educated...

Anyway, i smell a lost cause, so someone put up a new forum please!

I'm a newly registered member (but been visiting for ages) but haven't posted before because I prefer to view other peoples discussions on this great board and pick out the bit's of information I need. Most of it goes over my head anyway but it is fun.

I really liked the console forum and hung out there the most and have been a tad upset by some of the trolling that took place there recently.
Having said that. I was also impressed by the maturity of most of the members. Good job.

Personally. I'm looking forward to having the console forum return. You never know. I might even post there one day.

Just wanted to say thanks guys. I'll be missing the console forum till it comes back.

As I stated before I'm surprised there is still no official word about it, but don't insult B3D staff guys, they're not dumb.
There's no need to send any pm, probably we'll know soon what's happening.
Even if a consoles related forum will not be reopened we're free to move to other forums or even to create a new forum from scratch.

That isn't a bad idea. Dave himself said this is a PC only site last time they removed the console forum. Perhaps Dave could open and lock the console forum with a sticky and a link to the new forum as a courtesy? It would be a shame to lose members of the community that didn't read this thread.

I even have a licensed copy of vbulletin that isn't doing anything right now I'd be willing to donate.

I would also like to add, personally at least, that it's disappointing to read so many people go on about how the Console Talk board was the best thing about the site - it was only ever just one aspect of B3D and, it has to be said, not one of the main focuses. Considering the sheer amount of effort and time that goes into the rest of the site, it's almost insulting to read such comments.

I think many people (at least me..) were talking about the forum, not the site as a whole.

Neeyik don't listen to them . I would come here around 10pm est . Finish reading and modding the console forum at 4am . Read all the other posts in the rest of the site by 5:30 am , go to bed and then wake up at 8 to be at work by 9 .

This whole site is fantasic and I've learned so much since i signed up here in around 1999 . This is the best site out there . Its better than anand , toms and almost every other . The only site I can say is truely on par with this one i s aceshardware .

The articles are also top notch . They are highly technical yet easy to understand for those at a lower lvl than some of the posters here . Its a great site

If anything the console forum has been whats dragging down the site . It has been constantly filled with trolls . At one point sonic and I were able to get it down to a good pace. I would say about 3 months before e3 . But once e3 hit we got put up everywhere and had influxes of new members coming in . Then dave put up the best article on xenos and that was it . That is the point where the console forum died .

I wish you guys the best of luck in keeping the site up to the high standards its allways been at and hopefully you guys take your time and reopen the console forum right . After weeding out the problems

I suspect so but even with that in mind, the 3D Tech and 3D Coding sections should be the primary sections of the discussion board (B3D Articles and News being next!) given the nature of the site content; the CT board should be considerably lower down the rankings.

That was the impression I got.

I believe the console forum should be locked. Dave , sonic , myself , and the rest of the beyond3d mods should sit down and talk for a bit about who needs to go .

Archive the old forum and put it at the bottom of the site with the other locked forum .Then restart console talk in two sections . Technical and games . Then finaly add more mods .

That's probably a good idea. Splitting will IMO reduce the noise level significantly. See for example the Handheld3D forum.
Plus more mods and stricter rules would help as well. However, I can understand why Dave and the rest of the staff are getting tired of the CF. It has been locked several times and still after a while it deteriorated. That's probably downright frustrating. None of the other parts of Beyond3d are that infested with fanatism apart from the Religious, Political thingy.
Is it the most knowledgable console forum on the net? Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that it is the worst part of Beyond3d. So if Dave wants to close it forever, I'd be sad, but I could understand his choice.

I don't know why the CT board sould be considered a second class board, in my opinion it's (was..) the most interesting board on this site, it's the board where the most advanced technologies are discussed.
De gustibus non disputandum est..anyway ;)

Constantly locking threads which had absolutly nothing wrong with them should be a focus as well. With all this talk about trolls and such, i honestly haven't seen much of it except for one or two members (who's names escape me right now), but i have seen a lot of perfectly fine threads being locked.

Debating != Arguing.

It's good to see action finally being taken, but I hope a forum split won't result in a spreading of the problems to the other sections, as the console forum is the only place at the moment where all the problems are.

as i see the problem with the console forum recently was the influx of opaopa's kind. is it technically possible to make the console forum writable only to a certain access group and then assign users to the group by mods' discretion?

Honest, there is no good/easy way to give mods banning powers with this boards software...period.
It wouldn't take more than a short day for a medium capable php-coder to hack that in.
On paper maybe, in practice no. We tried over at EB and it just borks up the rest of the site, it is not as easy as ya make it out to be.

Digitalwanderer, are you just here to troll those of us that enjoyed the console forum?
No, I'm just here to giggle at all the trolls complaining about their trolling fields going away. ;)

Oh man what a shame...

I can't understand this whatsoever. I agree that the console forum was a constant source of trolls, but for the most part they stayed there inside that sub-section. So what's the harm?

It was a real source of knowledge, I have to say. Console technology is severely under-represented on the traditional tech sites, and sites like IGN and Gamespot... well, it's just above them.

*sigh*

Hopefully it returns.

Let's not toss the baby out with the bathwater afterall!

The Console Talk puts advanced 3D technologies into everyday context (for me). it's different from "regular" technology discussions which I like but it doesn't resonate as much.

We literally play with these technologies in our hands. CT allows the more technically curious to understand, appreciate and *learn* the compromises and solutions to tough 3D problems behind the consoles. I feel that this alone justifies its existence because there is no other board anywhere on this planet like it.

As a newbie, I wasn't aware that you guys need help moderating it. Perhaps you can signalled for assistance first before taking the big guns out. 8^(

Now I have lingering questions about aaronspink's, fafalada's and nodecript's discussion on Cell's Local Storage vs L1 Cache. Please do bring it back 8^P

I think what killed CT was the long-standing forum regulars who for some reason just could not help themselves posting and posting and posting more and more tit for tat rubbish.

People who should know what PM is for. People who should know how precarious "their" forum is. etc.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that quite a few of these people have gotten what they deserved.

anyone have a link to a good technical console forum? I know there are others.

Anyone?

Hey atleast beyond3d's badwidth costs will be cut in half!

I came across another good site with some very knowledgeable people. Seemed like some PS3/360 devs were getting into some deep discussion. Unfortunately I didn't save the link because I was posting here at the time :(
