Gabe Nevell Next gen Console Video Interview

For computer games it didn't seem so great an idea as it's only good for movie tie-ins.

Not sure about that, I was actually going to say it seems a little more practical and useful to use something like that for cross-platform development rather than from movie to game asset use. Think scaling down of assets from PS3 to PSP for example.

I haven't a clue how effective it is or how that's even achieved though.

I've read an article on that too Titanio. I'm going to have to search and find this info.

Gabe Newell either needs to stop whining and get on with making games, it's the same for every developer - it's their jobs, or stop making games and find another line of work

Erm, or how about he keeps making games and whines as much as he likes? Since when does everyone have to be a shiny happy person at work? :)

Is it me or did the rendering stuff mentioned by Gabe (3:27 of thefirst video) that reminds me of the much discussed Nintendo patent. It would allow much lower needs as far as poly budgets and sys resources. Take a look.

Popularity != sales

Actually, the real point is, good game != good engine/good technology/etc.
A game can be very good gameplay wise and very fun to play, but with primitive technologies (in some aspect, not every aspects). It's not necessarily a bad thing, as evidenced by games like the Sims, which is lacking in graphics department. On the other hand, games with greatest and latest technologies are not necessarily fun to play.

I'm not saying Valve has no good engineers or has no talents. Half-Life 2 engine is not bad, but it's not also the greatest. The most impressive thing about Half Life 2 (at least to me) is, unfortunately, from another company (Havoc). Doom 3 may be not as entertaining as Half Life 2 to some, but IMO the engine technologies in Doom 3 is better than Half Life 2.
