Formula 1 - 2011 Season

Given that it's standard for teams to change engine maps on the fly I don't see the point of this particular rule.

What's stopping them driving with the hot-blowing engine map enabled for most of the lap then switching to a normal engine map for the last corner and start finish straight.
It is from the beginning of Q1.

Scarbs seems to believe drivers can alter the engine map after lap 2 of the race, so we have conflicting information. If you can do it via the steering wheel, it won't be that effective. If you can only do it during a pit-stop and then only by connecting a laptop well, then it can be somewhat effective.

We'll see what happens or if more info comes out.

The 'might' be talking about something else because the rule would seem pointless otherwise. Of course it might also just mean the driver isn't allowed to change it either.

We know they can do it at will as we hear "use Mix 2" etc. etc. all the time.
But does that mean that they can change what the throttle does and when the ignition is? How big is an engine map?

If the FIA has instigated this rule and it effectively doesn't do anything, they are idiots. I don't think they are idiots.

I'm pretty sure they can change about anything they from the cockpit if needed. But with the default ECU it might be easy for the FIA to check if engine maps really follow the new rules.

I couldn't find any limits on the number of engine maps they could store at any one time, but assuming it is finite, they probably want to have as many as they can set up for the race, so not being able to wipe the qualifying ones and replace them with the racing ones means that they would be limiting their options during the race.

Though for quali the only engine map you really need is the ''all guns blazing'' one so I don't think that would really be a problem.
But you can't run that all the race.

All this is a parc ferme issue, can't change the set-up of the car after Q1 has started.

Apparently Red Bull were testing the new settings (ie not hot blowing) in FP1 today with Sebs car, he was 2.5 seconds slower than Webber....

I watched fp1 and iirc at the end of the session vettel went back to the old engine mapping and didnt improve much

The quali sessions have lost some of their proper tension.

Hmpf, hope the race will be better. DRS must work here.

Edit: Is it just me, or do the drivers in the post-session press conferences now sound like they all have speech impediments? The Madonna-style microphones they are using are basically shit.

There was some fighting in this race, except at the extreme front. Webber and Alonso had some good fighting, but Webber couldn't switch his prime tyres on so when Alonso pitted for the last time, Webber was behind and then he had a gearbox problem so there was no fighting at the end of the race. The wrong Red Bull won. :D

Let's see what the throttle changes at Silverstone brings.

Valencia, the city is pretty awesome.
Valencia, the gp track is not good. There were some DRS overtakes, but this track is just laid out wrong.

I'm happy for Webber's pole!
Alonso so close to RBR is also a nice surprise
What happened to McLaren and Renault? They seemed to loose 1-2s per lap.

Tomorrow should be cracking race :devilish:

This EBD, throttle and engine map issue is a huge clusterfuck. What the hell are they doing? The change in regulations during the season is irregular, but fine they were to change to 10% max open throttle. Then it changed to 20% and now nobody knows anything.

Anyway, Q2 was amazing, it was just like the good qualis we had last year. Webbo beat Vettel which is good and Alonso is just over 0.1s behind. Tomorrow should be good if Ferrari can challenge/overtake. McLaren are nowhere, did they get it wrong with setup or have the reg. changes really ruined them?

I didn't catch the race, but I'm surprised there haven't been any comments post race. I expected there would be more 'team orders' discussion.

Nah, it didn't involve Hamilton, people only complain when things involve Hamilton.

What I am surprised about is the lack of discussion of Hamilton's last few corners :p
