Fall 360 dashboard update details

Nice update! The cleaned up the dashboard and it's very quick now. Tried to stream across some porn and it worked great. That's obviously a huge plus. The best thing: the whole update, including the reboot, took less than 1 min.

Er... it seems the official site still only has the 05_2007 update available for download, for those of us without a Live Xbox...

Yes, that is indeed impressive. I just tried it. Seems to shut down faster now too. Some good improvements. This is certainly one part that they've got down pat.

I'm getting reports of some major problems, like HDMI output stops to work, or online games hang up...

I have no issues over HDMI with the new update. Live howerver is getting hammered at the moment - I couldn't even log in to the website a few hours ago. I guess they underestimated demand for the Originals @3-5gb a pop.
It is amusing to see .NET errors on an official MS site though :p

HDMI working great here too. Definitely more responsive as well. I also like the improved menu organization but I still think it should be easier and more intuitive to do certain things.

The Media Center Extender didn't get the codec updates. So the dashboard can view DivX and Xvid files, but the Media Center Extender still is limited to WMV and Mpeg2.

That's incredibly stupid.

Well, sure, but the extender is on the Xbox 360 itself, and it is the Xbox 360 that needs the codec. My Media Center PC doesn't need the DivX codec, the Xbox 360 does.

Irrespective of where it is processed, for it to become an extension of Media Center then the serving device must be able to handle it as well. The term "Media Center Extender" means just that; if its not part of Media Center, it can't be extended.

No HDMI problems for me on my 360 and I was able to download Crimson Skies and a TV show without issue.
My sons 360 doesn't want to seem to connect to Live at the moment but that could be our wireless, but his dash updated this morning...

My son was having the same problem as I was going to sleep not sure if its ok now

I find that while the dash is faster overall, sometimes when selecting certain submenus there is alonger wait for download information. I guess in order to speed speed it up overall, hey has chosen not to prload certain information.

In general, if there are images involved, these load very slowly for me, though yesterday was probably an extreme example because everyone was updating.

I think that's the same problem. Signing in to xbox.com isn't up to the usual speed too.

Prefetching was improved according to the release notes. :)

There seem to be even more changes than there were on the already impressive list. Though not all of them are really benefits. For instance, if you're a Silver member, apparently you can now see that a Gold member is getting demoes a week before Silver members (before they were just hidden to Silver members). Also, apparently if you have two accounts and one is a gold account that has bought a full version of an Arcade game, then right now another account on the same 360 cannot play that game. Though if true, that sounds more like a bug then something intentional, or maybe even a user error while creating the secondary account?

It's not new that Gold member get earlier access to content than Silver members. This has occured in the past as well, though only sporadically. However, it seems like this is becoming policy now (it applied to Culdcept Saga demo, HalfLife ep2 demo, free Xbox Originals themes, etc). You were always able to see the content though, although you used to get an obscure error code, whereas now it is an understandable message (i.e. this content is only available for Gold members, please check back in a few days). I think they cleared up more error codes to be more meaningful.

My sons was worse, I got an error over the last couple days that seemed like it was going to mean his profile was corrupt and he would have lost all his saves and gamerscore, it just magically was able to recover his profile today however.

Have you had any problems with achievements on Live Arcade titles with the new update?

My son was trying to get the Pacifist achievement on Geometry Wars and he got a sound that he got it, but nothing showed up on the screen and it didn't register on his achievements list.

There have been complaints with Live Arcade games not working right if your profile wasn't the one that purchased the title, even if it's the same machine it was downloaded to. This shouldn't be the problem for Geometry Wars as that wasn't downloaded, it's on the Unplugged disc instead.

I got a couple of achievements with Undertow the other night, post dash update, and that was purchased on an alternative account (that I can attach my Canadian credit card to).
