European Console Sales 2010

36 hour weeks? lol! I think that's just for promo's to make it look like life is easier!! I've never worked a full time job that has been less than 40 and most stretch over 50, some have even been 90+.

Well, technically it's 37.5 hour week (at least in Finland); 7.5 hours per day. The half-hour lunch break isn't considered working time in majority of office jobs, thus you only get paid for 7.5 hours.

A few people in the UK seem to like the 360 redesign:

Microsoft’s new and improved, slimmer XBox 360 console, the XBox 360 250GB (or XBox 360 S) achieves the biggest launch in the UK for a “revised” home console, surpassing the launches of both PS2 Slim and PS3 Slim and recording over two days around the same as the original Xbox 360's launch sales total back in week 48 2005.

This is even more impressive when you take into account that the original Xbox 360 was launched across two versions (Pro and Core).

A great week for Microsoft is ensured with the format holder’s XB360 exclusive title ‘Crackdown 2’ holding on to top spot in the All Formats Chart for a second week. A 36% drop in sales is not enough for it to be caught by Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-9%), which climbs 2 places to No2, only around 800 units behind ‘Crackdown 2’. Lego Harry Potter’s spell on the charts is slowly wearing off as it drops one place to No3 (-31%), while another previous No1, ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-19%) also slips one place, down to No4.

There is only one new entry this week, Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’, new at No5, while the rest of the All Formats Top 10 all make way by each falling one place. Microsoft also benefit from retailer price promotions and bundling on ‘Alan Wake’ (+98%) that helps shoot it back up the Charts from No23 to No11. Another retailer promoted title, ‘Bioshock 2’ (+97%) enjoys a similar jump, up from No24 to No12.

I hope there is some price movement on Alan Wake here in the US which would hopefully be met by a similar if not greater percentage bump.

Wow surprise, Chart Track apparently, started issuing numbers with it's UK sales this week (week 43)! Pretty cool.

Not sure of this will continue, or what.

Edit: ACTUALLY, it seems the original source link here is already pulled. As I guessed, it was probably an accidental leak and not any new chart track policy.

But anyways here the numbers as neogaf grabbed them quick.

All Formats

1. Fable III (Microsoft) 128,895
2. FIFA 11 (EA) 75,703
3. Fallout: New Vegas (Bethesda) 69,613 / 223,689
4. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft) 58,375
5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (LucasArts) 56,064
6. Medal of Honor (EA) 48,650
7. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2011 (THQ) 47,785
8. Professor Layton and the Lost Future (Nintendo) 45,470 / 104,818
9. The Sims 3 (EA) 28,624
10. PES 2011 (Konami) 26,732

15. The Sims 3: Late Night (EA) 13,139
26. Rock Band 3 (EA) 7,386
37. The X-Factor (Deep Silver/Koch) 4,335

The numbers actually seem a bit stronger than the Japanese market weekly numbers, at least discounting the occasional big seller at the top in Japan like a Pokeman.

And the top 40 by platform while I'm here, 360 quite strong. The numbers here I believe a neogaf sales junkie worked out by percentages (another site lists the percent sales of each game by platform, so he was probably able to work out much of the top 40 by this)

Is there a Forza Motorsport 3 bundle in the U.K? It's above Halo Reach

Cheers

Yeah, that's a bit odd. It's being given away free with the 4Gb Xbox @ Argos, although I doubt whether that would make a huge difference. It's is cheap at the moment though - you can pick it up for less than $20.

The death of plastic musical instruments in complete.

To be fair, the plastic instruments basically weren't out yet, just the game. It was almost impossible to get any of the instruments anywhere. I couldn't get the Keytar as Mad Catz couldn't get the PS3 version finished in time, and my store didn't want to stock them even once they do come out because EA / Mad Catz doesn't take faulty instruments back from them.

I want that Keytar and the real Fender, and/or the MIDI kit, but none of these are available anywhere. With the right push, this game could still do well at Christmas in Europe.

God I want that Fender.

Regardless though, Rockband has an uphill struggle in Europe, and on the PS3 in particular (delays and exclusive 360 deals really hurt the brand over here).

Interesting to see how well Kinect is doing in some countries that are predominantly PS3 bastions.

In Germany for example Kinect Sports was the only 360 title to break the top 10. Sweden with Kinect Sports doing better than COD: BO.

France and Spain, not unexpectedly snubbing their noses at Kinect. Although only seeing top 5 for France and 10 for Spain it's hard to tell if any Kinect titles made it into the top 20 for either country.

I'm now interested to see NPD numbers to see if Kinect was relatively more popular in countries like Britain and Sweden where a Kinect title broke the top 5 and Germany where it almost cracked the top 5.

First time I've looked at numbers for Sweden. They are amazingly open minded with a virtual tie between 360/PS3 for multi-platform titles.

And looking at charts for places like Ireland and Denmark, it's possible Kinect titles might have hit top 10 or top 5 if they broke down sales by console. But like NPD, Kinect titles have to compete with combined console numbers.

GT5 is still hitting the charts all over Europe I see.

It was also a good move by Sony to include it in a PS3 bundle.

My theory: in a PS3 bastion the 360 SKU of COD:BO is penalized, everyone is buying the PS3 SKU. (Also, cheap bastards who think $40/year for online play is outrageous :p). So Kinect titles, who can only sell on 360, bubble up thanks to the small but rabid 360 fanbase who are early adopters on Kinect.

I guess every country that the 360 doesn't do well is close minded and 3/4 of the 360 userbase plus the userbase of all other consoles and the PC are "cheap bastards."

Well, you learn something new every day.

Close minded? Where did I say that?

If PS3 dominates in a country, a multiplatform title sells less for the Xbox. So if in US/UK e.g. Kinect Sports is number two behind CODBLOPS, in a PS3 bastion it may become number one, because the CODBLOPS ballance shifts to the PS3, and the 360 SKU sells less relative to the install base; all things being equal and Kinect Sports selling the same relative to the install base, it may become first.

Heh heh. This is where I mention that the standard price for my country for Live is 59,95 EURO (that's the 'cheap' year rate), and that only recently can you shop around to get something in the 30-35 euro range. And beyond online gaming and a handful of discounts, we get zero value add in terms of Netflix type stuff. Zilch.

I subscribe to assen's theory, but would also like to point out that Kinect will naturally get more attention over here as the EyeToy for instance was a big hit here also (and exclusively) - the mindset for casual console titles on the 'HD" consoles is probably bigger by default (Move sales show this too I think).

Aye it seems in those countries where X360 doesn't do well, Wii is also far more popular which might indicate there's more of a casual bent. That doesn't appear to help Kinect in France and Spain however. :D Then again only seeing top 5 or top 10 there, Kinect may actually be doing OK.

I'm still amazed when looking at Sweden. That seems to go counter to Assens theory as PS3 and X360 are virtually dead even (for Multiplatform titles). And there Kinect on X360 still did better than COD:BO on X360.

I'm thinking it has more to do with Kinect offering an experience unavailable on other platforms. Similar to how Wii offered something novel and unavailable on any other system.

Wow, only 3 million PS3 install base by March of 2011? That makes it only about half of Japan. I thought France was one of the larger console markets?
