DriveClub by Evolution Studios [PS4]

This game really just gets better and better, I dont really understand the moaning about the penalties either or the few times the sun blinds you. I've been blinded by the sun many times while driving in real life maybe you guys in the UK dont know what the sun looks like. :)

Just the other morning at about 6am I was driving up a hill directly into the sun and had to almost stop because I was completely blinded, the power of the African sun :)
See this pic and then tell us where the sun is. The sky is cloudy with patches of blue sky. There's absolutely no way a driver would be straining to cope with the brightness, unless the sun had gone nova and the usual diffuse sky intensities increased a hundred fold.

Googles of road photographs

I see one photo where the terrain is all blacked out, but the sun is just in the top corner in that case and the camera iris is compensating.

Just as lens flare was used over-zealously in games and needed pointing out to devs as wrong to get them to calm down, we need to ensure that newfangled effects like HDR lighting don't misapply art to mess up games (although I'm only arguing from a point of example photos here as I haven't seen DC myself! The situation might not be as bad as presented.)

Just a thought, I have full range set, I wonder if those not complaining about the viability have limited range set?

Yes, that could explain their problems. Because me too I never had any real problems of visibility even during the worst case scenario I posted earlier.

Both my TV and PS4 are set to full range.

Even if the dark areas are clearly visible on your screen, I doubt your results look how they should, as per the auto-levelled examples in this thread. An artistic design that's dependent on the player's TV to have great handling of the darks is sailing too close to the wind for comfort, and will obviously fail for a number of users.

All I can say is I really haven't had any issues with seeing anything and everything shouldnt strive for realistic graphics otherwise you get idiot reviewers saying idiotic things like the game has no soul or isn't romantic. lol

As for drifiting - it is much easier with manual gearbox- you just simply aproach corner on the outside on 3/4 gear, max revs and tap hand brake right before you enter it. Then you gently countersteer, trying not to leave the track while changing your gears to 3/2. Above technique is not the best (you could approach much faster) but sufficient to finish drift challanges.
My favourite part of the game.

As for penalties - they are pretty consistent to me. I always know why I got them, altough on very rare occasions I didn't get one even if I thought there's reason for it (cut corner, crash).

Lol, somehow the online rankings are broken: scf, you have one specific speed trap challenge with your average speed being 12330 km/h...this is more than Mach 10!! Don't use a rocket car...this is unfair :oops:

muahaha this is my counter strike to Globalisateur's 8000+ points corner

There have been some confirmed bugs where the drift score shows up as the average speed and such.

Some people have clearly found a way to cheat, several average speed challenges have been over 1000mph, I didn't notice Thrust SSC in the car list.

OK, so a little fiddling later, it seems my TVs "PC" mode was causing problems. I have since set it to "game" mode and the levels seems a lot better (I can see the road in places I previously couldn't)

Seems PC mode used limited mode (the evolution and driveclub titles would also have a gray background rather than black how they look now), I'm happy with it now. Just done the pro trophy, the game is incredibly easy.

Plumped for the seasons pass too, having got a discount on the game anyway, it seemed rude not too.

If the PC mode was using limited and the console was sending full, you'd be getting crushed whites and blacks, not greys. And while I don't want to give TV manufacturers too much credit for their setting names making sense (because they're usually terrible), it would be bizarre if "game mode" was full and "PC mode" was limited.

It sounds like you have your console set to limited, and your TV's PC mode was at full.
