Blu-Ray, HD-DVD will not need HDMI for Video until 2010

Is the optical audio in xbox360 still tied to the proprietary multi AV port as in the old xbox, or is there a standard spdif plug?
I think the "advanced cable" had a converter inbuilt that converted the signal to optical.
That tells nothing about the HDMI and xb360 though, just came to my mind...

There's a plug for optical SP/DIF on the component scart cable.

Cheers

MS is releasing an HDMI cable that will let ALL of the 360's work through HDMI.

Assuming that they do, which I think is possible, it won't have the protection scheme we're talking about. So it'll just be like the DVI to DHMI cables.

And why do you think it wouldn't have the copy protection scheme?

Because HDCP needs to be built into the chip at manufacturing stage. Meaning that unless all X360's now already have HDCP coded chip inside, the HDMI cable won't have HDCP, which kinda defies the point of HDMI since by definition, HDMI precludes HDCP.

While at this point i dont think a 360 HDMI cable is likely, there could be an HDMI chip at the base of the cable itself.

The reason why theres doubt as to whether or not the 360 can have HDMI is because there doesnt seem to be pins on the A/V port that pass digital video, not because there isnt a TDMS somewhere upstream of the 360s A/V port.

The idea is that a firmware update could modify the internal Video scaler and allow it to pass digital video straight to the port into the outboard TDMS/HDMI chip. If the 360 was using XENOS to provide HDCP video then yes, youd be right and that would have to be 'registered' upon manufacture.

The main benefit, to MS, of this solution is that it takes the entire cost of HDMI and makes it 'a la carte' which seems to be in line with their current strategy.

Good question. If MS can do it, Sony will do it too for the cheaper model.

IMO, there's a couple of reasons.

1. Sony has flat-out said the 499 unit is NOT upgradeable to HDMI, MS has been a bit more non-committal on the subject.

2. If they could make a universal port that would accept all flavors of A/V cables, why not use it on both units? They could always include the HDMI cable with the 599 unit...

* Major Nelson (Larry Hyrb): "Talk to me about HDMI. What kind of output is this [HD-DVD accessory] gonna have?"

* Mark (a.k.a. The Xbox Accessories Guy): "The video output is handled by the console. So you're gonna plug in the standard A/V packs that you're already using today... and I think the question is really, "hey, is there gonna be a HDMI pack?" ... You know, we continue to look at that stuff. Today, component is great for HD; lets you get all the signal that you want out on all the TVs that are really out there. We continue to look at this from a market perspective. I think our competitors are doing the same thing, and we'll keep investigating that in the future. Don't really have anything..." (trails off)

Xbox-Scene believe this means that there will be no HDMI or DVI cable.

A lie? It was nothing more than speculation. MS has never said they'll have an HDMI cable.

I was talking about the person that brought it up here. I was thinking that it was a fact. Guess I read it wrong.

I was only the messenger. Thought the new info directly from Microsoft might be welcomed. Oh well.

I don't suppose it's ever occured to you that they could place the chip in the dongle, has it?
