Something else to consider is that I think the MS store had a free game with purchase promo longer than amazon did.

At the same time, a large percentage of the Arkham bundle sales on amazon were probably prior to June from pre-orders since it was announced months before.

That all said, amazon's rankings probably aren't all that useful this month. I don't think it's going to be that close. I'm actually (more or less) in agreement with Pachter's prediction.

$16.8 billion in PC gaming in China?

Per year?

Does that include the cost of all PCs sold in China, whether they're used for gaming or not?

PC gaming popularity has to do with ease of piracy compared to console software?

Yup! And it isn't that surprising as PC gaming tends to have greater popularity in Asian countries (not including Japan, although it's rising in Japan). PC gaming also dominates S. Korea, for example.

Much of this has to do with the fact that many people can't afford a console or even a PC. Hence the popularity of PC "gaming rooms" (basically analogous to the west's, Internet café) where the majority of the Chinese populace play their games. Combine that with the huge popularity of PC eSports in much of Asia and F2P games and it's something the feeds on itself.

One of the members of my Final Fantasy 14 raid group is from Brazil and provides some interesting insight into this. Although the situation there is somewhat different. In Brazil for example, console gaming and handheld gaming are generally reserved for rich people because the general populace usually can't afford a console or handheld gaming device. It's not exactly the same, however, as Brazil has incredibly high taxes on consoles that aren't manufactured within Brazil. But is similar in that many people in Asian countries can't afford to own a console, much less buy games for them.

The 360, PS3, PS4 and XB1 are all manufactured in Brazil.

That certainly does help, but they are still mainly for a very small minority of the population compared to countries which grant their average citizens greater purchasing power/disposable income.

True. But Brazil is deemed important enough that MS and Sony are willing to manufacture consoles in the country to avoid the import taxes. We don't talk about Latin America much but some latin countries are far from irrelevant.

Brazil and Mexico fall within the midst of western countries when it comes to gaming revenue.

Xbox One 2014 June = 197k
Up 51% = 297k

Wow Batman sold more on PS4 NOT including bundles. With bundles, the split must be largely in the PS4's favor.

Great number for XB1. Unless the PS4 sold a lot more than what I was predicting, then it may be closer than I thought. I was expecting a ~100k gap.

@DrJay24, I was curious about that too. Even XB1 hardware seems to have gotten a small boost.

Good month for Xbox+the industry, sales up across the board. Sometimes these months are so weird no idea why some months seem so healthy and others so anemic with seemingly little rhyme or reason (although I'm sure somebody will bring up Batman).

Anyways 360 did 198k in June 07, so XO was almost +100k gen over gen in June. Still about 30% ahead of 360 pace gen over gen in USA (7.47m vs 5.75m). It's interesting how One is perceived as somewhat of a failure despite this being the case, but it's because of how the direct competition is performing.

However One has some tough comparisons coming up as here's what rest of 360's 2007 looked like

July 170k

August 277k

September 528k

October 366k

November 770k

December 1260k

Although GAF would destroy me for it I continue to think it's reasonable XBO worldwide shipments should be about double USA sales (this was the case throughout for 360), so it's probably around or at least approaching 15 million shipped now. too bad MS will never give us insight into that because it would make them look bad compared to PS4.

XBO outsold PS4 on 5 of 9 multiplats in the top 10 too (other being Splatoon). Leads me to believe hardware sales were reasonably close this month as that has a big effect on software.

I cant think of too many new Xbox's, just the 1TB 399 SKU I think. There's the 1TB/Forza 6/399 SKU as well, but that's obviously a preorder. Sadly, MS is probably seeing a decent uptick on XBO average selling price with the 1TB model, maybe something like $375 counting a few 499 Kinect boxes sold too, Not really the direction I think they should take.

I think MS is doing a good job stimulating interest with pack in software. And that should continue with the planned Gears Ultimate bundle next month. As always though if I'm Phil Spencer, I would eschew the BC stuff and tell my engineers to focus on a cost reduced (probably without any node shrink, but I'm sure there's still oodles that can be done), smaller box like a laser. Getting out a 299 smaller form factor IMO has been what MS should be shooting for.

I'm thinking that the US is closer to 60% of XB1's total sales. AFAIK, XB1 is ~7.4M (sold-through) in the US, so I'm guessing shipments are more like ~14M WW.

As for software sales, remember XB1 had their promo that gave customers a choice of a free game, which unlike the PS4 bundles, actually count towards XB1 software sales, and yet the PS4 still won in software sales.

edit: cream posted his pie chart. Estimates are:

PS4: 365-367k
XB1: 297k
Wii U: 70k

PS4 took 61.59% (1.1M) of Batman sales which does not include bundles.

Both XB1 and PS4 exceeded my expectations, XB1 a bit more so.

I actually think it is very close to 70%.

Based on what evidence?

I see no reason to assume things have changed since 360. In fact it's much more plausible to assume historical trends hold.

When MS was still giving XBO ship numbers, IIRC the 50% ratio that 360 established was holding.

The whole rest of the world includes Canada, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, many places besides Europe.

Also, there's a tendency on GAF to view the Xone as a disaster in Europe. But it often easily places popular multiplats in the two position in France and even Germany. Meaning they outsell every other PS4 game that week. The other thing to keep in mind is the bigger the EU market the more XBO friendly it tends to be. Most Europe sales will be in UK, France, and Germany, and those are more friendly to Xbox versus say a Spain or Greece (or probably Xbox can focus marketing there), which start to become inconsequentially small sales. Although Xbox has done poorly in Germany it's true, it's done better in France.

But I guess that's all tangential, I just dont see any hard evidence that XBO is doing relatively worse in Europe. Last gen vs Sony lets say Xbox had 65% USA share and 35% EU share. You can halve both of those, for a rough example that may be somewhat close to reality, and it's still relatively the same ratio.

The other thing is Sony is separating out PS3 shipments and PS4. So based on the shipment numbers, either 360 has been outshipping PS3 the last two years, or the ratio of XBO USA:World is still roughly 50%. In fact when I assumed Sony's reported PS3 shipments were exactly the same as missing 360 shipments since next gen started (which I think is very reasonable for an approximation), you come out exactly at USA=50% of Xbox One shipped again. To get the number above 50% you'd have to say 360 is outshipping PS3 by ever greater margins the higher you go on the Xbox One USA:World ratio.

To put hard numbers to it, since October 2013 through March 2015 MS reports shipping 21.1 million Xbox's (360+One). Since October 2013 through March 2015 Sony has reported shipping 29.4 million Playstations (PS3+PS4). Of those, 7.1 million were PS3. So yeah, if it's the same number for 360, then MS was at 14m for One at the end of March 2015. And I dont have it exactly but USA XBO sales would have been ~7 million then, so it would work out again. These checks are dubious to be sure, but they're all we have and that they work out perfectly seems suspicious.

We dont know but I think it's probably around 50%. There's also a lot of seeming "surplus" in ship numbers (meaning you add all the sales you can get and they seem always less than reported shipped). So the 50% USA is hard data, the 50% worldwide includes all the slack.

Didn't Sony recently claim that they have between 70-90% of software sales in continental Europe? If true, I'd therefore suggest that Xbox One sales are significantly lagging behind PS4 in that region. I agree that Europe isn't the only place outside of the US that consoles are sold, but Europe is the second largest market.

Canada and Australia (the other countries that I imagine Xbox does well) have smaller populations than several European countries.

Edit: little old UK has a significantly greater population than both Canada and Australia combined. Who knew.

The third best market for Xbox One after UK and US is France with 72% malet share for PS4 if we only compare PS4 and Xbox One. The Wii U sold more than Xbox One in France and Germany.

June 2015 NPD - PlayStation 4 remains best selling hardware in the USA.

Please note that all numbers quoted below are based on estimates and therefore this report may not be 100% accurate.

The PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system sold the most hardware this month with about the same number of units sold through to end users as the Xbox One and Wii U totals combined. The PlayStation 4 continues to be the cumulative sales leader in the USA with more than 8.2 million units sold through to end users.

Unit sales were up across all 3 next gen consoles this month thanks to the release of Batman and an increased number of bundles and trade in deals on PS4 and XB1. The Wii U got it's increase thanks to the success of Splatoon. Total next gen home console sales were up 120% Month on Month and up 21% Year over Year. The below takes a look at how console unit sales have done through the first 6 months of 2015 compared to the same time period in 2014.

1_zpsuorn5pwo.jpg

As can be seen from the chart above, the PlayStation 4 has seen sales remain flat for the first 6 months of 2015 compared to sales in the same time-frame a year prior. The PlayStation 4 entered 2014 after a successful holiday season and remained hard to find on store shelves for the first quarter, sales were very healthy during the first 6 months of 2014 and we've seen that happen again this year despite the console remaining at the same price.

The Xbox One has seen a 17% increase for the first six months of 2015 compared to the same time frame last year. The console price has dropped $150 and new bundles have been introduced in order to promote the console and encourage additional sales. Whilst sales are up this year the cumulative total and half year total remains behind the PlayStation 4 which has remained at the same price and is now a higher price than the Xbox One. It'll be interesting to see how the console performs in the second half of the year which is usually much stronger than the first half for Microsoft.

The Nintendo Wii U saw sales decrease 10% YOY. The Wii U hasn't sold well in the USA with the install base less than half of the PlayStation 4 despite launching a year earlier. Last year the console received a sizeable boost during the Mario Kart 8 launch whilst this year we haven't seen that same boost despite very strong Splatoon sales. This shows that the Wii U install base isn't set to grow too much over the second half of the year as the majority of consumers who want a Wii U already own one at this point.

In total, the number of unit sales for gen 8 home consoles was up 4% YOY for the first half of 2015 with approximately 3.25 million units sold to end users.

The chart above shows how the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One have performed over the first 20 months of their life cycle in comparison to the first 36 months of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 life cycle. What can be seen straight away is how the PS4 and XB1 had amazing launches in the US which instantly put them higher than their predecessors.

Hindered by a high price and bad rep, the Xbox One failed to perform well during its first 12 months and looked like it could fall under the Xbox 360. However some price cuts and bundles + new titles ensured that the Xbox One had a great first holiday and has allowed the Xbox One to continue selling at a healthy pace ahead of the Xbox 360. However, it does look like the Xbox One is set to fall behind the 360 at some point which started off slowly but increased drastically later on.

The PlayStation 4 has seen continually healthy sales which has allowed it to remain the cumulative sales leader in the USA. There has been no price cut for the PlayStation 4 just yet and it really hasn't needed one. The PlayStation 4 is set to remain ahead of both the PS3 ad 360 when launches are aligned and is on track to have an excellent holiday season.

3_zpsjjnijwlx.jpg

When looking at monthly sales we can see that the PlayStation 4 has consistently outsold the Xbox One each month since launch with the only exception being the holiday season and a couple of other months. Microsoft have been very aggressive during the holiday season and the results have shown that the Xbox brand still has a huge following in the US where it has been most successful over the years, however despite the lower price and large amount of value on offer the PlayStation 4 continues to remain ahead every month.

The second half of the year will be interesting to watch, especially after what happened last year. Microsoft are throwing their all at the Xbox One this holiday with Halo 5 and Tomb Raider launching exclusively on the system. Microsoft has done well to come close to the PlayStation 4's total which is something we haven't seen in a prior console generation and they'll certainly be looking to keep up with the PS4 if not over take it to become the cumulative sales leader.

4_zps4fljw7tl.jpg

As mentioned above, the PlayStation 4 has maintained a good lead over the Xbox One and that has grown this year. There is now 770,000 more PlayStation 4's in the hands of consumers compared to Xbox One's and this gap is set to grow even more. Microsoft will be hoping for a repeat of last year where they were able to close the gap down to around 500,000 and will be even happier if they can reduce the PS4 lead even more. However the Xbox One has had to go through a lot to keep up with PS4 in terms of unit sales and it won't have been cheap.

To date the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold more than 15.7 million units combined.

When looking at yearly sales the PlayStation 4 sold 4.7 million units in 2014 whilst the Xbox One sold 4.4 million units in 2014. In total the PlayStation 4 sold 300,000 more units that year. This year the PlayStation 4 has a lead of 300,000 units already and is set to grow that lead. It'll be interesting to see which console will sell more in 2015 and by how much as trends indicate that it could be a closer battle this year than last year.

5_zpsxlpjf1gn.jpg

At this point I'm forecasting that more than 7 million PlayStation 4's and Xbox One's to be sold in the USA during the second half of the year leading to a total of approximately 10 million sales across both consoles for CY2015 in comparison to 9 million for CY2014. I believe this will be fuelled by strong Xbox One sales during the holiday thanks to increased value, exclusive titles (Halo) and increased marketing. I also expect the PlayStation 4 to receive some sort of price cut this year, either temporary or permanent & either standalone or bundle in order to push console sales this year. Couple that with the exclusive titles for PS4 and third party partnership games and we are set for the PS4 to have an amazing holiday as well.

*All numbers used above have been rounded.
