If one console is $500 with VR and the competitor is $400 without VR, which one sells more?

That's assuming they're about the same power or the one without VR is a little more powerful because it spent more of the BOM on a better APU.
That's the Kinnect scenario where MS felt that Kinnect+TV offset a lower powered apu. With VR, it's not a VR vs apu proposition. The best vr experience is directly tied to graphic power.

I'd expect both to offer bundled and unbundled options at launch.

You can convert sub accounts to master accounts and don't need access to an email account to have your password reset, so less possibilities. What I'm driving at, is that there are unlikely to be large volume of such users.

Nothing saying it happens a lot, but there are multiple reasons why people would not keep their old account.

The upgrade was not available until february this year I believe. And it's only if the age on your subaccount is >18, I think.
Some might have sold their old PSV/PS3 with the account and the software attached to it etc.
And if you're under 18, you might want a master account anyway :)

That article is factually wrong utter shite. It says PS4 released last year. It didn't release in China until March 19th. It says in the last year they've sold 550k combined. The link says they are forecast to sell 550k this year, based on predictions of an analyst from before PS4 even launched, February this year. It contains no information.

PS4 probably isn't selling well (we'd have heard if it was) but this isn't the article to show it!

Actually much of that article is based off of... http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-07-08/game-over-in-china-for-playstation-and-xbox

And the 550 combined sales forecast for 2015 is based off of a report released July 01, 2015 by Niko Partners a firm specialized in analyzing the Asian markets. Bloomberg doesn't link to the correct release. But other sites have covered it. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2015-07-01-xbox-one-ps4-sales-disappointing-in-china-report It's based on their sales performance up to this point in 2015 and forecast for the rest of the year. And it's forecast to be less than 550k for 2015. In other words, it's not based on a forecast from before PS4's release. :)

Niko also reports that Sony and Microsoft may face competition from one or more Chinese consoles such as the one rumored to be in development by Alibaba. Also interesting in one of their reports. Both consoles are now being distributed by the same company as BesTV (Microsoft partner) has merged with Oriental Pearl Culture Development (Sony Partner).

Either way consoles aren't even a footnote in China where PC gaming is expected to hit ~16.8 billion USD in 2015. The next largest segment, Mobile games (smartphones) at ~4 billion USD is dwarfed by the PC gaming market in China.

So yeah, the Forbes article is full of inaccuracies, but not in a way that would favor PS4/XBO. They've actually sold far less than the 550k that Forbes claims for the past year as 550k is the forecast for all of 2015.

Also interesting in a linked article. IHS is forecasting 34 million worldwide sales of PS4 versus 20 million worldwide for XBO by the end of this year. That's life to date, not just 2015. Still not great for XBO, but better than losing 2:1.

Regards,
SB

TBH the current position (reported on VGChartz) is also exactly the same ratio - whilst at a glance it can look like 2:1 it's a shade under (PS4 is a little under 65% vx XBO and this article suggests that will change to just under 63% vs XBO)...so very marginally better.

Fair enough. Sounds like Windows as a TV box would be the ideal 'console' for China. PC gaming moved to the TV with combined mobile gaming would suit the Chinese very well. MS could provide Windows free as they'd make their money from the content sales.

$16.8 billion in PC gaming in China?

Per year?

Does that include the cost of all PCs sold in China, whether they're used for gaming or not?

PC gaming popularity has to do with ease of piracy compared to console software?

Quick n dirty Amazon PS4/X1 June (it should be fully updated) in preparation for Thursday NPD

#25 PS4+TLOU
#26 PS4+Arkham Knight (Vanilla)
#27 X1+AC Unity
#53 X1+MCC
#54 X1+MCC+1TB
#70 PS4+Arkham Knight "Limited Edition Bundle"
#85 Nvidia Shield :)

Umm, difficult to parse, 3 PS4 SKU's =25, 26, 70, vs 3 XBO SKU's =27, 53, 54. Would seem to me to definitely lean PS4 though. I guess one way to look at it crudely would be #27 XBO cancels out #26 PS4 (basically), #54 XBO cancels out #70 PS4 (with some surplus), so that leaves #53 XBO+the amount #54 XBO outsold #70 PS4, vs #25 PS4+the amount #26 PS4 outsold #27 XBO, which is greater? Clear as mud. But yeah looks like PS4 in a fairly close month by Amazon, which anyways is consistent with recent NPD's.

One other factor thought is the PS4 Batman SKU's have been selling for a couple months and those preorders count in the months they were sold (too lazy to look up their position in past months) so this will add some more to PS4 if we are trying to equate to NPD since NPD doesn't work that way.

July so far looks quite different, but it is probably only counting one week.

#12 PS4 Arkham Knight bundle
#54 MCC XBO
#77 1TB MCC XBO
#92 Vanilla unbundled 500GB XBO (have no idea why this would even be on here, guessing some 3rd party had a sale on it)
#94 Vanilla unbundled PS4
