Been rehashed but hard to imagine what MS suits were thinking. Launching a lower spec box at $499. Ridiculous. Dead out of the gate, behind fast 5, 6, 7:1, hard/impossible to recover in continental Europe.

I honestly think the DRM debacle had little lasting effect on anything that's gone on this gen. The true movers imo are always power and price, in that order.

I am not sure about this: back when both console were introduced at E3, in Germany the TV stations reported that both systems have equal power. But gamers I meet to this day think that the One spies on us (quite prominent topic here, as the US government spies on nearly all European politician leaders and people are not super happy with this).
Does Joe gamer really know about power difference?

About price: after MS giving away 'hundreds' of games when you buy a One for free and the console still doesn't sell as well...I am not sure if price matters.

Reading some Greenberg comments it was clear MS thinks a LOT of people are waiting to upgrade their 360's, and that BC will convince them to dive in in hordes this holiday. That was clearly MS rational in spending the $ on it.

I doubt it'll be that easy, but then again holidays are strong for MS and I expect them to do well. Just not a sea change.

its a gamble for sure but if I was in his position I would have argued for the same decision on BC, for many 360 owners who have yet to make a decision it helps swing the value proposition in XB1's favor. I've seen good arguments against it but for me in particular the online multiplayer shooter enthusiast can reason I can the games I love and continue to game with the people I know and play Halo 5 when it comes out too. It lowers the perceived risk of adoption, how much that gamer ends up using the service is secondary issue.

I agree that Europe is Sony's market to lose at this point, it's just that for me these platform sales ratios are a snap shot in time and too often the leader will rest on their laurels and let the competitor back in. MS has done an excellent job positioning the XB1 post initial release fiasco. While I'm confident in Sony some of the decisions/investments don't make much sense and some questions like where first party software or why was XYZ delayed haven't been answered satisfactorily which suggest a modest head wind for the leader.

Yes but I think it is the biggest Microsoft problem... Many delayed title, Drive Club problem and so on and they are way behind. The momentum is there mostly because of MS mistake and maybe they will be a little behind this fall but after 2015 it seems everything will be aligned with a better catalog of exclusivity all year not only big AAA games at the beginning of the year and nothing later.

But don't forget what I said FF is the biggest RPG but French and maybe other european country like japanese games and Disgea 5, Dragon Quest Heroes or Persona 5 will not pull FF number but will push more fans toward PS4 this fall in France for example. The catalog of Playstation console has a great diversity. It is a very different market than US. FF 7 Remake first on PS4 is huge, best FF 15 and MGS 5 version is huge. GT games are big hit here. Each little exclusive RPG or Action RPG is a great addition to this, Star Ocean 5, Nier 2...

FF7 Remake has by far the biggest number of view on youtube...

Japanese culture is huge here not only game but manga and anime too. I read France is the second country of the world for manga and anime behind Japan. And it is huge in Germany. Germany and France combined are much bigger than UK...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga_outside_Japan

Manga, or Japanese comics, have appeared in translation in many different languages in different countries. France represents about 50% of the European manga market and in 2011 manga represented 40% of the comics being published in the country.[1] In 2007, 70% of the comics sold in Germany were manga. In the United States, manga comprises a small (but growing) industry,

LBP 1 and LBP 2 combined are 11,2 millions of sales and I think again most of the sales comes from Europe. If Dreams is successful it is another type of gamer choosing PS4...

In multiple big french forum, die hard Nintendo fans had buy a PS4 after E3 and give their PSN ID. Because Nintendo fans like japanese game too and were underwhelmed by Nintendo E3. They will not give up on Wii U and they will buy the Nintendo NX but the PS4 will be the secondary console... I even know a friend who stop gaming because he is fan of japanese games and who want to come back because of multiple Square- Enix announcement.

And MS mistakes didn't begin with the Xbox One. After 2010 they were too much into Kinect and many european 360 core gamer buy the PS3 as a secondary console and played exclusive Sony games...

Yes, MS started to move toward entertaiment/Kinect much before Xbox One. Internet is full of horror tales of MS ignoring the needs of indie developers for years and years. This all changed after they saw preorders on Amazon after E3 2013.

I'm not sure about other countries, but in Italy we (they) tend to attach to one brand, and there is much more of a sense of peer pressure than I encountered in the UK, for example.

That basically means that throughout various eras of gaming, 'Nintendo', then 'Gameboy', then probably 'Megadrive', and now 'Playstation' are basically synonyms with 'video games' - Nintendo and Playstation being by far the biggest ones.

So you don't play 'video games'. You play 'the Playstation' or 'the Nintendo'. And when your mother was annoyed at you, she wouldn't tell you to stop playing video games, she'd tell you to "turn that f'king Nintendo off" or you'd get a slap. I mean, she bought me a Sega Megadrive and still was telling me to turn 'the Nintendo' off...

And I think in this case, it seems that Playstation has stuck for many years, since the PS1, and nothing much really challenged it, except maybe the Wii, for a bit.

This kind of phenomenon exist everywhere with 1 leading console.

I may play the Nintendo this evening. :yep2: In the UK, of course, we don't care what thing you play your games on, but it's definitely your round - mine's a pint!

Ubisoft Explains Why Digital Games (on console) Stay More Expensive Than Physical

Digital is more reactive than what we put in stores, but at the same time, it doesn't react as fast on consoles than it does on PC

Sorry source needed.

What we can say is that when games are older than one year, digital is a lot more dynamic on console because there are less units in stores

So there are more sales so you prefer sell at higher prices?

"If you look at the PC [post-release discount] trend, I think you will see that on consoles, but you will have to wait a little bit of time for that to happen with the same speed,

We are actually more aggressive on the PC side where digital is very, very strong. We tend to be more conservative on the digital side for more console and more flexible on PC.

Because "please understand"?

Also, one thing to consider is related to stocks; if we have stock in stores, we tend to make sure we decrease the quantity of units in stores before going digital with lower prices.

Sorry but all of this is one big pile of BULLSHIT

Please just admit you exploit the poor console peasants...because you can.

Ubisoft Q1 2015 financials; 56% revenue from digital sales
http://www.euroinvestor.com/news/2015/07/09/ubisoft-reports-first-quarter-2015-16-sales/13187739

Digital segment revenues totaled €54.1 million and represented 56.0% of total sales versus 23.2% the prior year.

No kidding.

Ubisoft is selling twice as many games on PS4 as Xbox One:

During the three-month period between April and June, the PS4 represented 27 percent of Ubisoft's software sales, versus 23 percent for PC and just 11 percent for the Xbox One. Notably, Xbox One software sales are down from the 14 percent share of Ubisoft's previous Q1 results, failing to surpass those of the Xbox 360 and PS3, both of which accounted for 11 percent of sales each. These figures suggest that the Xbox One still trails the PS4's install base by around two-to-one.

"...PS4 represented 27 percent of Ubisoft's software sales"

"...23 percent for PC"

"...11 percent for the Xbox One".

"Xbox 360 and PS3, both of which accounted for 11 percent of sales each"

Consoles 38% and PC 23%...?

Old consoles selling more than new consoles?

No, PS3 / Xbox 360 / Xbox One all have 11% each.

There is a surplus of 17% though, mobiles and handhelds?

So consoles == 60% total? PC 23%. That probably says something. 17% would be Nintendo, handhelds, mobile. A list of Ubi's releases this year on all non console+PC platforms would give an idea.
