It's not going to change fortunes any time soon it seems clear now, but I think the hope is in time it could become important...in time...the China middle class will have to grow.

China heavily censors all forms of media; TV, movies, books and games. I wonder what the game selection is like for nextgen consoles in China. Knowing that could explain a lot.

Chinese player mieumieu has posted this on GAF:
I just bought an imported Japanese version ps4 in March. A lot of my friends still choose imported consoles even after the official version is out because both ps4 and xbone are still partially locked and the fear that someday it might revert to total region lock if a policy change is mandated. Therefore I think the sales figures are good for reference but the market situations are still quite nebulous.

As to why ps4 sells much better than xbone in my opinion

1 ps4 has more localized games. both simplified and traditional Chinese versions are abundant. Also in some cases like order 1886 and ff type 0 they do not have an official mainland Chinese version but you can switch to simplified Chinese language in a hk-taiwan version.

2 The total region lock really tainted the xbone reputation even though it has been reversed.

3 psx and ps2 are two very popular consoles back then even though most games are just pirated.

Why not just offer an upgrade path then for any 360 owner? Which I thought MS had offered with a trade in deal? :???:

Microsoft doesn't have an official upgrade program. Now there have been a few temporary trade-in deals from separate retailers like Microsoft Store, Best Buy & GameStop. Microsoft might be better off just offering a free Xbox One with 2-year Xbox Live Gold sign-up. Especially if they never offer a way to play your 360 collection via streaming.

So ms still at the 180s ;)

With regards to China, you can't seperate Company policy from government mandates. We'll likely never know the full extent of the situation. But the entire thing with the China Free Trade Zone started with extreme and very stifling government regulations (many products/companies were required to spend lots of money "bypassing" [bribing] officials to help them get around those, not always successful) on what a company was allowed to do and what it could offer. Over time some of those restrictions have been lifted.

It's quite likely that at launch Microsoft suffered far more government oversight and far more government restrictions than exists today. Hence the relaxing of some of the policies that were in place. As these restrictions and these types of restrictions only exist in China, there's very little doubt this was probably the case. If it was company policy, you'd see much of it across the board in other countries as well.

A situation where launching early was likely far worse than launching late.

SB

One Month of PS4 sales in China beats 8 months of Xbox One sales (Rumour)

Original un-translated article: http://www.k73.com/ps4/93242.html

Not great sales, but the XB1 seems to be dead in China (not surprised).

When you look at the rumored numbers, that's not too bad for XB1 in China if you ignore the 7 months difference of availability.

PS4 sold...73,000 units
Xbox one ...sold...71,000 units

I mean, ignoring the different launch dates of both machines, PS4 beats XB1 by a nose only.

Sometimes the best PR is to STFU...

In Germany, there is still the impression among many gamer I talk to that X1 is a console that spies on you.

Consider the actual NSA/BND scandal...it might not be even that far off

In France the PS4 is much more popular. Probably nearly 3 to 1... The Xbox One is a US and UK console. And they lost some ground there too. All the sales gain in continental Europe with 360 from OG Xbox will probably be lost. In Spain it was only a little more than 2 PS3 for 1 360. Now it is 7:1. Tiers 2 country number are like Spain from what we saw of software nordic games sales...

Germany LtD hardware sales (in million) from November 2013:
Wii: 4.6M (42%)
PS3: 3.9M (36%)
Xbox 360: 2.4M (22%)

That means the US market (and UK to a certain extent) is very important because it is where the majority of console were sold.
Maybe we can look at it in reverse where 3:2(? I'm just throwing numbers here) in the US become 2:1 because of the worldwide sales.

No there is a little more than 8 millions PS4 sold through in US. Don't remember the exact number. PS4 sold much more in rest of the world. And the number of PS4 system sold through worldwide was 20,2 millions as 1rst of march 2015...

I think it is 50% US and 50% rest of the world for PS4, Xbox One and Wii U sales.

And we have no idea of Xbox One sold through...

The Xbox One launch was a success worldwide out of Japan or China not as good as PS4 one but now the gap is growing out of US and maybe UK...

I think to have any hope of making large gains MS needs to revamp the X1 to a smaller form factor (which imo in turn will change the whole image) and drop to $299.

I think they will actually do that this fall in the States, with another temporary $50 off price cut (probably without the smaller box, it's probably too early, but then again maybe we see it at E3?). that's my guess anyway, or at least I think it's a 50-50 chance. This time though after the holidays they can actually return to $349 since it's a tenable price point, unlike $399.

I think their latest financial said cost of revenue decreased more than revenue decreased for Xbox...this basically tells me $349 didn't cripple them in fact I'm thinking they may have room to drop again by the fall.

Their problems will not be solved with $299€ price point or smaller box. If they lower the price, PS4 will go to $349 and will still be viewed as more desirable console [as it already is today even though it is more expensive]. Xbone is often 100€ cheaper than PS4 in continental Europe, and customers don't care.

Looking at this stage, the only places where MS has a chance of reaching PS4 is US and UK. They can brute force their presence there because of past successes and willingness to throw a lot of money on those markets. The rest of the world is lost, not in the sense that they will be driven out of business, but just their sales will never come close to PS4.

As for future "wildcards"... MS has Win10 integration [apps+streaming to the desktop], and Sony has Morpheus. I somehow think that VR has better chance of finding mass market appeal, especially since Sony is successfully promoting PS4 as a gaming-first console.

You just said "reaching" PS4, as in matching it in sales.

I just think its ridiculous we're talking about this. A few years ago MS was beating Sony every month by more than double margins in the US, and now we're speculating if MS can even equal Sony's sales at any point in its home territory.

Absolutely insane.

You can find Xbox One with a game and a 2nd controler at 279 euros in Germany and it is not working. Many Xbox One discount in Germany but the PS4 is far ahead...

Xbox One standard deals in germany:

Xbox One, 2nd controller + one game (Forza, MCC, Fifa 15 or Sunset Overdrive) for

279 or 299 €

And the explanation the Sony boss of Germany is giving are third-party marketing-cooperations. Jeah way to go Sony. So exclusive games don't really count anymore. What is important is to keep people thinking that games are exclusive even though they are not.
