I have long given up expecting gaming journalists to be able to demonstrate basic math skills. And in the case of financial reports, basic reading skills ;)
Of course... why would any self respecting game "journalist" waste their time writing detailed analysis of a game company's financials, when they can just slap down a page of clickbait drivel with a sensationalist headline and generate more site traffic?

Gotta pay those bills son

Wasn't the 360 performing way better than the PS3 since PS4/One launch? I remember to have read some reports that said that Sony wasn't too happy with the sales of the PS3, apparently decreasing more rapidly than expected.

There is nothing in that report about Sony being unhappy. This is a factual account of their quarterly report from a year ago. Significant decrease in PS3 sales because.. PS4. :???:

I'm sure MS would rather sell XB1s than replacement 360s for 360 owners.
Hmmm.. how about the programme where Microsoft offer you a new Xbox One instead of repairing your 360? With a decent discount this may get people in the current Xbox ecosystem and reduce their desire to try the PS4.

That would work better with BC, without they are trying to say "Hey, ditch all those games and peripherals and start over with a much smaller library!"

Yup! But I bet some people would rather have a new console and there are some attractive bundles.

Isn't that an 'up yours' to everyone with a working XB360?

"My XB360 broke and I got a free XB1."
"Shit, mine's still going strong. Hey, cat! Come sit on my nice warm console!"

Their financial plan and forecasts still account for selling another 25 million X360's after the launch of the XBO. Basically, their plan is to continue selling and profiting from X360 well into the lifetime of XBO. Or another way to think of it. Another 1/3 on top of the existing sales up to that point when the XBO launched.

Thinking about it. That would mean they must be planning to sell the X360 for another 8-10 years. As sales are going to drop compared to pre-XBO launch, it's going to take quite a while to sell 25 million units (assuming it's even possible).

SB

It seems like they overshot though, last announced figure was 84 million. Seems to me like it could limp to 90 million but 100 million, I dunno.

For comparison 100m would put it with Wii for the generation lead (Wii stopped production at 102 million I think). And presumably PS3 would be in the same ballpark.

A late price drop might help a little.

Woah, who said free? I said discount. The economics of consoles are that profit comes from games, network services and peripherals.

When a product breaks the owner generally feels a mix of anger, disappointment and frustration. This is often directed at the manufacturer. It may not be the user's first broken 360. The user may be thinking it's time to twitch.

This is about keeping frustrated 360 users in the Microsoft fold rather than consider buying a PS4 where Microsoft lose on every game that user didn't buy on their platform and lose if that user drops Live for PS+.

Lose your game library? Yes you do and if you still play that library a lot it may not be worth it, some may want to keep their lastgen console - I still have my PS3. But I'll wager plenty sell their console and library to fund their nextgen purchase. Games can be sold or traded in for credit to buy new games. This is not a new choice for console owners.

Why not just offer an upgrade path then for any 360 owner? Which I thought MS had offered with a trade in deal? :???:

One Month of PS4 sales in China beats 8 months of Xbox One sales (Rumour)
Not great sales, but the XB1 seems to be dead in China (not surprised).
That's not great. AFAIK XB1 sold almost everything in its opening week and virtually squat since then, so that 8 months counts for very little. It's not as if PS4 is selling 8x faster to catch up so quickly. Both consoles have had a very lacklustre introduction. Perhaps China isn't the wonderful new market some have been hoping? Or maybe they just prefer the grey market??

XBone did virtually squat after launch because that console was totally closed up when it was released. China got 6 [or 8?] games, none were ever added after launch, XBLive was limited to Chinese players and console was unable to read non-Chinese disc releases [there are reports that this was now patched in].

PS4 launched with more games, was a bit cheaper than launch Xbone, few games were added after few weeks, PSN purchases are limited to China but retail discs were unlocked from day1, and gamers can contact/play online with anyone worldwide.

Because the trade in deal is worth $100 for a working 360. Microsoft really don't want to repair/replace that 360 and have to support it even longer, they'd rather the person upgrade - particularly as the repair comes with a cost to Microsoft that they may not recoup given the number of games which are coming only to current gen.

Take a slight hit on the console, recoup in the long term, reduce the risk of platform switching.

If there's any validity, those sales are pretty low on both. Another data to take into consideration when considering China, but also to be taken with salt again.

It's not going to change fortunes any time soon it seems clear now, but I think the hope is in time it could become important...in time...the China middle class will have to grow.

As I understand it the Chinese middle class is still a large number (tens of millions) even if a smallish proportion. I guess they're just not that into video games at the moment. Maybe they are too PC focussed and China won't ever be a rich pasture for consoles?
