You can't call them irrational when they are clearly working to expand the user base. Expensive, maybe, but not irrational (unless the meeting where price drops were decided just used a Magic 8 Ball to decide what to do).

In a span of a year, MS dropped price for 170-180$, and not only that, they are also giving at least 2 games for free with every console during hollydays. They are really brute-forcing the sales of Xbone with irrational discounts. It will help them... in US and UK.

Sigh. We've been over this before.

You can not count the brand new SKU (without kinect) as a $100 price drop as it didn't exist before. What you can say is they lowered the price to entry. It was not a price drop.

What they did was have temporary price drops for the Kinect-less SKU from the $399 price down to $349 for a few months. They also had some spectacular sales to hit a price of $329. They also threw in some games.

Always wanted to get one at launch. The price change definitely helps, but I also have more time to dedicate back to gaming and will have even more time soon. Some of the new released games also make it more attractive such as Sunset Overdrive, Halo MCC and FH2.

Last night picked up KI Season 1 Ultra Edition. I haven't installed Ryse yet, but will tomorrow or Tuesday.

Isn't that just semantics though?. When PS3 slim launched no one said it wasn't a price drop.

I see nothing wrong with the shorthand 'price-drop' to mean 'dropped the minimum price of entry'. We all know what the person means in the context of the phrase's use.

Heck, DieH@rd didn't even call it a price drop, but said they "dropped price". From context that's obviously 'of minimum entry' and he didn't really need the qualifier. Yes, he could have said, "In a span of a year, MS dropped price of entry for 170-180$, and not only that, they are also giving at least 2 games for free with every console during hollydays," but as that doesn't change the meaning of his post, why grumble? He also used 'for' instead' of 'by' but we understand what he meant, and he used 'hollydays' instead of 'holidays', yet no confusion on interpretation.

A "price" relates to an SKU: a specific product. It's common to compare prices between competing or replacement products (PS3 -> PS3 slim).

The Kinectless SKU didn't replace the Kinect SKU, although it has eclipsed it in terms of sales. It wasn't a price cut, but the cost of owning a (generic) "Xbox One" has certainly dropped with the Kinectless SKU.

Totally fair to say that the "cost" of owning an Xbox One has dropped ~$150.

Semontocs!

Black Friday deals helped Sony shift a lot of broken DriveClub bundles.

MS dodged a bullet by not going full on with bundling the broken MCC.

...

... sigh ... and so the Halo brand takes another huge kick to the balls.

Edit: UK chart, MCC down to number 27 already. Thanks, 343.

Lol, c'mon function. The reality is that a compilated broken port of old games that everyone already played isn't really going make a lick of difference to the Halo brand as a whole. Halo 5 is still going to launch to rave reviews and sell gangbusters. Folks still love halo.

I can't believe a) people are still buying DriveClub and b) Sony have the balls to sell what is still largely, a broken product.

Also, there's been a sudden sea change in Amazon monthly rankings for November. AC Unity X1 is now 3rd, GTAV PS4 bundle is 17th, and regular PS4 is 20th.

Perhaps only a portion of the GTA PS4 bundles sales were captured at the point when the monthlies updated, but barring that it looks pretty strong for X1.

So, final November Amazon rankings.

03 - XBO: AC bundle - (up 7 spots)
17 - PS4: Black Friday GTAV + TLOU bundle (completely sold out, not shipped by or fullfilled by Amazon [edit] - looks like they got some more stock in, shipped by Amazon again) (new to top 100)
20 - PS4 (down 4 spots)
56 - XBO: AC bundle - (down 7 spots)
65 - PS4: Destiny bundle - (down 11 spots)
70 - XBO: COD bundle - (still fullfilled by Amazon, and up to 619 USD now!) (down 26 spots)

As expected Black Friday moved a lot of units of a lot of things causing a lot of movement in the top 100. If this was all we had to go by PS4 may have narrowed the November sales gap quite a bit.

Was not expecting...

1 - XBO: AC cheap bundle to shoot into the top 3. Figured maybe 7th or 8th in final rankings. IE - more sales than I expected.
2 - Was expecting the PS4: BF - GTAV + TLOU bundle to debut lower. Mid 20's instead of 17th. IE - more sales (sold out over the weekend) than I expected.
3 - PS4 to drop to 20th. Was expecting to maybe get to 18th at the lowest. IE - less sales than I expected.
4 - XBO: COD to still be that high, especially with the limited supply price gouging. Was expecting it to drop into the 90's or possible off the charts. IE - amazed that it contined to sell enough to stay on the charts after Black Friday.

Regards,
SB

It depends what else was selling. A lot of software could easily move the hardware down without it really affecting sales negatively. I see Super Smash Bros Wii U and 2 Pokemon in the top 20. Plus Madden and Minecraft and Just Dance 2015 for XB1. So possibly a lot of extra software getting moved this month boosting their relative ranks. Therefore, PS4 may have quadrupled its sales, but the software and XB1 AC had even higher growth and pushed PS4 down the relative rankings.

For me, the 2014 rankings are most surprising. Three varieties of PSN card in the top 3, then PS4 at fourth. Extra PS4 controller is at 6th (less than hardware). Yet XB1 controllers are at #20, while XB1 hardware is at #43. So XB1's are selling more controllers than PS4 at Amazon, and more controllers than consoles so that'd average >2 per machine. Local coop, Mr. Developers!

Also, XB1 @ #43 while PS4 @ #4 & #27. You'd think PS4 would be selling vastly more than 1.5x XB1, easily 2x and possibly 3 or more times more, but that's not the case going by NPD. So Amazon rankings are definitely skewwhiff and not representative of national behaviour across retail.

If consoles have a lot of different bundles then that's not going to show up wrt rankings.
Ie of console A has had 10 different bundles over the year as well as the main console and console B has only had 2 different bundles as well as the main console then that's a huge difference.
Iirc xbone has had 2 different consoles this year. First with kinect and later without vs a one sort of ps4

Not sure I follow you there. If the ps4 controller is at 6 and Xbox 1 controller is at 20 how does that mean they are selling more Xbox controllers.

I'm talking about controller sales relative to hardware sales. PS4 consoles is at number 4, DS4 at #6, so PS4 sales > DS4. XB1 controller is at #20, XB1 consoles at #43, so XB1 controllers >> XB1 consoles. XB1 owners are buying many more controllers from Amazon and are likely averaging higher than 2 controllers by console.

You only have to look at the overall best sellers in Electronics to realize that Amazon buyers aren't representative of the whole market. The list is inundated with Fire products which is not a general market reality. Or else Amazon would be Apple-esque in terms of profit.
