They probably feel they don't have too. No doubt a GTA V release date will be revealed toward the end of September but IGN reported a retailer letting slip that it'll launch on 18th November.

This is the same week as Far Cry 4 (f*** you, Ubisoft), Dragon Age Inquisiton (f*** you, EA) and Sleeping Dogs (f*** you, Squre Enix). Publishers have tended to avoid launching games close to GTA releases where at all possible so this must be a little disconcerting. It's not a new GTA game but I think it'll sell a ton. For those on tight budgets it's going to be stealing sales from other games.

The distribution of games currently for November/December is dumb. According to my gaming calendar this is how it looks.
  • W/C November 3 - Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
  • W/C November 10 - The Crew, Assassin's Creed Unity, Wow Warlords of Draenor, Lego Batman 3
  • W/C November 17 - Far Cry 4, Dragon Age, Sleeping Dogs, ? GTA V ?
  • W/C November 24 - nothing
  • W/C December 1 - nothing
  • W/C December 7 - nothing
  • W/C December 14 - nothing
  • W/C December 21 - nothing
Admittedly I'm only tracking games on my radar or that I'm interested in.
I think publishers still want to release during these months because it's the biggest shopping time of the year. And it's pretty normal for games not to release so close to Christmas.

I've got a bad feeling GTAV is going to be delayed.
This week there emerged a rumour that the PC version was delayed but Rockstar have clarified this is not the case.

Rockstar said:
‘GTAV is coming fall 2014 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC’. There never has been any specific date, or even month, which is probably the root of the rumours of a delay.

You are still making the assumption that those third party multi platform games will drive sales of XBoxOne specifically. That may be a flawed assumption.
It is difficult not to be influenced by one owns situation and surroundings. I'm in one of the tier two countries in europe where the XBO is officially launched right now. In spite of a decent launch package deal the interest just isn't there. The stunning lack of interest is a bit of a mystery to me really as the 360 sold quite well here, but the XBO just isn't moving. People seem to have made up their minds as to what they are interested in, or they are following the lead of the PS4 early adopters, or - something. My lack of full understanding doesn't change the situation here though. I guess the perspective of someone living in the US or UK would be very different, but in my neck of the woods, the XBO is as desireable as the Zune was back in its day.

It could be a combination of all those things really. This is the first console generation where online multiplayer can play heavily into launch sales, so initially high PS4 sales can continually grow off more people wanting a PS4 to play with friends on PSN.

There's also the "My PS3/360 is good enough" crowd, not everyone is concerned about buying the latest-and-greatest and wait until a lower-price/better-deal comes along.

Neither console has BC even in the first iterations to encourage audience loyalty, so the 360 has no effect on consumers other than brand identity. Couple that with the PS4 being $100 cheaper in the beginning while offering similar features w/ good press behind them, and you've got a decent understanding for Sony's current success.

I've got a bad feeling GTAV is going to be delayed.

From what R* has reported, they wanted to improve the radio stations music selection. From all indications, it will be a mid November release, with a rumored PS4 bundle. R* can easily sale an additional >5 million copies across PS4/XB1/PC during the holiday season.

I was being cautious... :p but yes, I can see them doing 8m or more.
It's still a bit of a gamble - I imagine there's a lot of PS4/Xbox One owners who already played it and may not want to play it again. I have already played it I'm really looking forward to playing it again mostly because of increasing the population and car density it'll feel like real L.A! :yep2:

But how many people played through all the Haloz and are still stoked at buying the Master Chief Collection, or the same with The Last of Us?

GTAV is one of those games that has great single player replayability. I'm not sure about TLoU, but just by its nature and age, I doubt the MCC is garning sales due to replaying the single player campaign missions.

I'm shocked at the interest in TLoU and the MCC both, but if those are incredibly popular to the point of moving actual consoles, I can't imagine why GTAV wouldn't do the same.

To this day I've still only completed Halo and Halo 3 so the MCC appeals because two of the games would be genuinely new to me.

The Last of Us had only sold 7m worldwide by July 2014 so the Remaster had appeal not only to those PS4 owners who played and loved it on PS3 but those who never had a chance to play it. However GTA V has already sold over 30m worldwide so it's potential market to people to whom it would be new is much smaller. How many nextgen console owners do you think didn't get a chance to play it on 360/PS3 or love it so much to buy again?

But I still think it'll do well

Bungie themselves said a little while ago that a huge fraction of their userbase is predominantly focused on the single-player content, and an 8-hour campaign wouldn't mean much if it didn't have good replay value.
(In my case, there are some levels in the first Halo that I've possibly played in excess of 100 times.)

I just saw this.

If you purchase Destiny via DD on the 360 or the PS3, you'll be able to upgrade at no cost to the Xb0x or PS4 version through January, and all of your progress and characters will transfer to the new console.

I guess they don't want people holding off on purchasing Destiny in hopes of holiday console purchases. Nice deal, and certainly makes the DD versions more appealing than the physical.

Well, the initial cost of the PS3 DD version, 70€, is still waaaay too much. I am still gonna wait for some inevitable <= 50€ sale.

Bungie are incredible in this regard. Single player and co-op through the campaigns are unlike anything else. You don't even begin to realise how amazing the games are until you've finished them on heroic+ several times and have begun playing them to destruction.

Halo 2 co-op is very tempting as a reason to buy an Xbox One. Some of the arbiter levels are glorious.

By the prophets, I'd buy an Xbox One just for an "Arbiter Life" collection of Kinect mini-games if it was made by Bungie.

Thanks for sharing, I just cancelled my physical PS4 copy and ordered a digital PS3 version. I really wanted both but it didn't make sense to me to buy the game twice.

Hmm, spotted on GAF. Evidently this is a list of some Chinese retailer XOne preorder numbers. Here is the chart

tX69BWv.jpg

I am not sure what the last column is but next to last appears to be all the retailers on the chart summed. So basically, about 32k XOne's preordered from these retailers.

Here is the (assumedly Chinese) poster who posted the chart's commentary

Who knows. There's really nothing we can compare with.
So realistically we'll have to see how Sony sells later this year/early next to see if it's good.

However, to give the numbers some context, the following is the estimated pre-order total for some major retailers as of 08/13/2014:

Sunning is the 5th retailer down the list.
So as 08/13, the kinect version sat at 10741 units and the non-kinect version at 1991.
Accounting for the current changes of 12,800 preorders on the kinect version and 2,800 on the non-kinect..
That's an increase of 2059/809 units for the past 20 days.

Note: the chart above does not include online orders directly with MS or subsidized models through cable deals.

Good, bad? who knows.

Too me this is quite good. I would have assumed essentially negligible sales in China until proved otherwise. But this shows apparently 32k preorders, and it's not all retailers and I would think walk up sales could double or more. Basically at a wild guess I would think maybe 100k day one, or at least 100k shipped into the country.

This means imo we could indeed be looking at a substantive boost for X1 shipping numbers this quarter, if, lets say they are shipping something like 200k to China, plus all the other minor markets covered. Assuming maybe another 50k week one in Japan (might be half that I guess) Possibly.

I might wild guess something on the order of 1.6-2.0 million X1+360 shipped this quarter, versus 1.1 last quarter (USA sales have increased a bit too with non-Kinect version out).

The other oddity to me is Kinect version outselling non Kinect hugely. Would have expected the reverse.

If I were you; I wouldn't hang my hat on that information quite yet. Those numbers could easily be vendor/retailer preorder numbers - not actual customers (consumers). Vendors/Retailers place preorders (orders) from manufactures, just like customers do with retailers. In other words; this could be a peek into what some China retailers are planning on receiving.

It's not good if anything. 32k preorders? how many preorders did the other countries get on their first week?

US/EU first week sales combined wizzed through some 500k pre orders, might even be in the million territory so 32k doesn't ring a nice tone to me.

50k in Japan?... ya. ok.
I think they are lucky to even break 10k after the second week.

Early adopters are more likely than anybody else to buy Kinect version. It shouldn't be surprising.
