Japan has become such a finicky market, just when you think you know a game will sell well there, like Hyrule Warriors, it goes on to post some pretty soft numbers. After three weeks, still under 100k. I was expecting this game to track really well in Japan because of the Warriors games prior success, but that hasn't really played out.

Not really a shocker, but early reports are suggesting a complete disaster of a launch for the Xbox One in Japan. Not really surprising seeing as how even the PS4 has been off to a very slow start there, but we could be talking sub 50k units for its launch there. I think its clear that the Xbox has already launched in the markets where it will get the majority of its sales, there is a reason they held off with markets like Japan.

Someone is feeling insecure.

MS is throwing every single promotion they can think off and hoping something that will stick. They tried everything except lowering console price below $399 or giving larger Live vouchers for free. This latest US offer is nicely targeted to cover Destiny launch. :D

Whoa, it can be any retail game not just the selection in the picture?

That's pretty aggressive indeed.

IMO I've figured in order to match PS4 sales in USA MS'd probably need $349 plus two triple A games, something like Master Chief Collection and Sunset Overdrive, packed in. So, this is approaching that. This is better than the deal I got too, which was Forza and Titanfall, but I didn't get a choice.

All this always makes me laugh though, because thank goodness they "saved" that money on the GPU  Wonder how much they're "saving" now.

That's pretty tricky for Destiny week though. Good idea really, if the goal is to sway some non-brand warrior buyers from one console to another.

Why pick that week and not show the Destiny art? They put PvZ and COD, both are like $20 games, but not Destiny? Strange marketing.

What do you mean by destiny art?
The cover on the web?

The ps4 marketing deal probably prevents it

If I was an average consumer all this signals to me is that Microsoft is desperate. So why would I buy one now when I can wait and see just how far they'll sink?

I know its looking pretty much looking like a one horse race this generation so far, but as much the WiiU is considered as a non-factor (me included), in comparison its not doing that bad. I wouldn't have said it 6 months ago but 2nd place is looking like its still up for grabs.

WiiU simply cant match what Xbone can provide to its users in terms of popular 3rd party games [heck, GTA6 alone will be purchased by ~40m fans on nextgen in ~4 years]. Having good Nintendo games and few 2nd party projects is all good and nice, but those games can only attract Gamecube level of sales. I don't think it will be able to sell anywhere close as Xbone.

I agree with your assessment of Wii U sales projections, I personally estimate about 18 million units total before its gets discontinued after holiday 2016. I am personally expecting Xbox One to sell around 35 million units. I have yet to see anything that makes me believe its going to see a huge turnaround, and start matching PS4's pace. Halo will sell some units, but seeing as how the biggest shooters in the world are multi plat, I doubt it will have the same effect it did for the 360 early on.

Yeah, this is definitely interesting. I see Gamestop UK have the Sunset Overdrive bundle at £309 so it's edging closer to that magic £2xx price

Japan launch of Microsoft Xbox One a damp squib

Rough start...

But the usual enthusiastic crowds that greet big launches in Japan were absent on Thursday morning, with just one buyer at a major electronic retailer in Tokyo.

"I was surprised that I was the first one to get this even though I didn't wait in a queue," said Kazuyuki Wakai, surrounded by half a dozen journalists from Japanese and international media.

Microsoft spokesman said:
"We have high expectations as this (machine) is loaded with graphics that will surely satisfy game players"

Loaded with graphics?

You are still making the assumption that those third party multi platform games will drive sales of XBoxOne specifically. That may be a flawed assumption.
It is difficult not to be influenced by one owns situation and surroundings. I'm in one of the tier two countries in europe where the XBO is officially launched right now. In spite of a decent launch package deal the interest just isn't there. The stunning lack of interest is a bit of a mystery to me really as the 360 sold quite well here, but the XBO just isn't moving. People seem to have made up their minds as to what they are interested in, or they are following the lead of the PS4 early adopters, or - something. My lack of full understanding doesn't change the situation here though. I guess the perspective of someone living in the US or UK would be very different, but in my neck of the woods, the XBO is as desireable as the Zune was back in its day.

I still don't understand why they bothered selling the xb1 in Japan, seems like a total loss and waste of time and money. Maybe they had to for developer relations? There has to be some reason because their mere there presence there does more harm than good because it makes them and their console look silly.

I believe MS didn’t want to concede Japan totally to Sony and Nintendo, without having some type of presence there. It’s better to show up for the fight and take your lumps, than not showing up at all.
