[360, PS3] Mass Effect 2 *(Spoiler Warning)

As far as I can guess, here are some things about ME3...

- rachni queen, quarians, geth and heretics, even krogan (because of the genophage cure and/or Wrex) may be allies for a Paragon Shepard in some big battle, resulting in smaller losses
- the Collector base may be a huge advantage for a Renegade Shepard
- unfortunately it's likely that they need to handle the possibility of any of the 12 ME2 team members dying on the suicide mission; so the human Ashley/Kaiden and Liara may be the only guaranteed ones, and the dirty dozen may not play too important roles

Just the above few things make my head explode when I try to think about all the different ways the story can play out. It's gonna be either one hell of a game, or a biiiig disaster ;)

well, for me the only thing that needs improvement with respect to gameplay in ME2 is the mining aspect and resources searching.

don't get me wrong, I loved it generally and nearly did all research possible for my ship and for my weapons and upgrades and all this stuff...at the end, not much was left.

mining a planet was fun too....but it was just a bit too time costly. I put so much time in getting those resources on the planet, and the search for the resources itself could have been a little bit more interesting, and maybe could be changed to something were skill results in faster/better resources...if this is in ME3 but a little bit tweaked (faster, but more stuff to research, and more freedom what to research) - the game is flawless for me with respect to gameplay!

with respect to story: I was a little bit dissapointed that after recruiting all people, doing all their special missions...the end of the game is like in "fast forward mode"...but I 100% expect that ME3 excels in the story department and especially during the end mission/ story end!!

with respect to tech and graphics: nothing to complain from my side.

ME1 was a good game, but ME2 def is a great game...now I hope that ME3 is fundamental :)

Some new details about the PS3 version of ME2, glad to hear the port is not getting half as sed:). I'm also bewildered about this quote here,

Not sure if it's including the latest UE3 stuffs or just their in house updates. Does the 360 version look different now to its launch state?

No changes to the 360 version since release. They must mean 3 years of engine updates since ME1 came out.

So I guess they didn't upgrade much then, even ME2 tech was pretty dated in 2009, lots of objects didn't cast shadows at all, lighting wasn't much better than ME1, no SSAO, it wasn't like they were rendering huge levels either, basically a series of kill corridors with little to no verticality and minimal interactions with the environment, separated by long loading times.

Lighting is one of the biggest improvements for ME2, shadows as well.
And there were some bigger areas too, particularly in Collector land...

Game still looks fantastic on PC and if uppgrades for PS3 version closes the gap then it will look really good. Also lighting is greatly improved over ME and AFAIK game got baked AO and there are bigger levels/areas in the outdoors with pretty big view ranges.

See the screenshots.

Yeah, I thought Mass Effect 2 was a great looking game. Maybe the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 will give us a taste of what to expect from Mass Effect 3.

The PC version looks better than the X360 because of these advantages:
- higher screen resolution shows more texture detail for distant objects
- AF, AA helps with sharper image and less aliasing
- more VRAM allows for full res normal and specular maps

None of these are possible on the PS3 as far as I can tell. There's definitely not enough memory to load higher res textures, AF is unlikely because of performance reasons. There might be some SPU resources left for MLAA but I'm not sure if Bioware is a studio to experiment with it.
Considering how the game's been fine tuned and optimized for the 360s architecture, PS3 owners should be happy to get a 100% port IMHO.

As for ME3 I don't think there's much left to upgrade or squeeze out of the systems. I expect the game to look on par with ME2, and content and general polish will be the main advantages (ie. richer RPG systems, more complex enemies, larger hub worlds).

I'm pretty confident to see visual upgrades for ME3 on consoles with the latest UE3 features such as sun shaft, SSAO and dynamic lighting. As for ME2 on PS3 I hope at least they would try to add something new to it in terms of visual upgrade, my best bet is MLAA.

Though PC has higher quality for lensflares and some other post processing effects to. Sure I saw it in DF article and it's present in shader files in 360 code section with comments from devs.

ME2 had some sort of sun shafts, although I consider them a pretty minor thing.
SSAO wouldn't fit with the art design, mudding up everything. ME is always very, very sharp.

And MLAA isn't just that easy to add, particularly to a middleware engine.

Im pretty sure that directional AO could work nicely as it wouldn't blend ambient result to black, but would 'properly' block ambient term.

Most of the realtime AO would look like noise or dirt which would ruin all the large smooth surfaces that are a big part of ME's art design, IMHO.

Probably a mistranslation of this quote from the last page:

Oftentimes when you got to the PS3 you see stuff like down-resing and using a smaller than 720p resolution to try and get back some of the framerate. We haven't done that says producer Jesse Houston, we really wanted to try to make it as good, if not better than the Xbox version.

Most likely.

FMV quality will be the first benchmark on how they are making it better.
It is very easy fix and if they have not made that, it's hard to imagine anything else being upgraded.
