Sony PS6, Microsoft neXt Series - 10th gen console speculation [2020]

AMD doesn't have competing GPU hardware for RT today compared to last-gen's Nvidia boards. The 4090 was such a huge leap from 3x to 4x, I don't see the next-gen consoles having that equivalent. Raster performance isn't really going to be a big factor in 2028 as most studios will have full RT game engines and will have moved away from raster pipelines. The CPU won't really matter much as long as it's within reasonable speeds to not bottleneck the GPU. Those are my rationale thoughts on the matter.
Intel got ai hardware and ray tracing right on their first try, out of the blue. AMD keeps using area constrained solutions that have limited performance, but they are perfectly capable of building similar hardware to Nvidia and Intel if they are given the necessary budget. And with the Sony collab, it's two companies wanting a competitive product.

From past history, AMD has never been able to make a console equivalent in power to even their own highest-end GPUs. I'm not wishing again as some may do. Just going off of trends.

I think we predicted about 2070 performance for this generation and it landed around that. I am expecting about 5070 performance for the next generation, if the generation stretches very long maybe 6070 performance.

These are reasonable positions of the higher end of mainstream hardware.

I'm talking about efficiency, not raw power. The 500-600$€ consoles are going to be around the xx60-xx60ti of the 2027-2028 generation, the 250-300$ videocards equivalents, with more VRAM available. Anyone thinking that any console in the future is going to take the power crown is dreaming.

Unless someone makes a 4000$ console for some dumb reason 😅

Well, "able" does a lot of heavy lifting here. AMD delivers what customers ordered. It's pretty common for customers to want less then the peek hardware vendor offers. Both MS and Sony want as much as they need to be competitive in their space and not anything beyond that.

All this talk about most powerful hardware is wishful thinking from people who obsess over numbers. Console manufacturers license from the entire portfolio based on market predictions, not by ordering by performance and hitting "buy" on the first entry.

A 2070 is below/at 1080Ti so I agree. A 5070 is nowhere near a 4090 in raw throughput, so I'll agree with that as well.

4000$ console?
No, but... Maybe 2000$ Sounds nice!

:)

I see most people debating the high end consoles but what about the sequal to Series S?

Do we expect the Series S2 to surpass the Series X in power? Right now it's a 3rd of the GPU power. Do we expect that to hold true for the next one?

Should they drop Series S tier altogether? Although I think that would be a big mistake.

If we go by the god leak, I don't think there is going to be a series S2. Probably a powerful, costly console and other third party consoles. All using the Xbox UI on top of windows. So no devkits and dedicated versions of games, just the PC builds.

Optional access to the windows interface.

The steam deck model, almost 1 to 1.

It will likely be dropped if they cloud is capable of replacing it

Hate to dig up the past, but you were quite down beat on the current gen before launch, gapping it at 1070 level… 😅 edit: although 1070 and 2070 aren’t that far apart in Teraflops that where all the rage back then haha

lol. I was probably down yea, though oddly I always thought myself to be overly optimistic. I think we as group landed on 2070 afterwards for the feature set of RT and DLSS and the approximation of flops.

Unfortunately, the DLSS portion didn’t happen and the RT wasn’t quite enough.

To be honest my memory is a bit haze on that period and it's too hard to search that far back haha. In any case the stuff I remembered were probably written before the launch of Turing, so old stuff... and back then nVidia had less paper flops vs AMD making things fuzzier. Your speculation certainly always was pretty well thought out :)

Oh boy. Yea if you went back to 2012/13. I am completely embarrassed of my posts. They get slightly less embarrassing over time.

The longer you are here the more wisdom you get over time. A lot of people here were pretty patient with me. I look at a lot of the more recent posts and I remember starting out like that; just rabid fighting over stupidity.
