Looking at the support site and apparently there are still Live issues as there have been for the better part of a week and a half.

I guess they figure why turn on another account creating feature while it is broken.

So how everybody like the new coat of paint? Personally I like it quite well. When I first tested it the new side-to-side view was a little disorienting. It took me awhile to adjust from the isometric view. But once I did, I haven't had any probs since. I like the new "softening" they have done to everything. Much cleaner look. But other than that the new look hadn't changed my day-to-day use a whole lot. It still does everything I did before with about the same effort. Although there were a few changes that I wasn't real pleased with most notably with the Game Library.

The Game Library is now a shell of its former self. Gone are the ability to rate your games, see details about them or check out their Marketplace content. All that is now done exclusively in the Marketplace. In the Game Library the only thing you can do is play or delete them. I'm now way more likely to skip rating games since I have to go find them in the Marketplace. I wouldn't have so much a problem with the leaner content if it had actually sped up the loading of the Game Library, but it's still damn slow & the only way I found to speed it up is to actually to start deleting games.

As for the Games Marketplace, it's much better all around. It's organized better & easier to find content. But as an Indie gamer I have kind of have mixed feelings about the channel being demoted to Specialty Shops channel. You can no longer find Indie games in the main Marketplace section with all the other Game content. But at the same time it's really well done with better ways to filter content by genre, title, etc. And it greatly helps that the top lists are now 50 deep instead of 20. A couple of new cool additions were added to the Game Marketplace late last week, both found in the updated Featured channel. They are the Kinect Games & Add-Ons for Your Games channels. They were both suggestions I made early in the beta. It was great to see some of my ideas make it to the final build. Unfortunately, the Add-Ons for Your Games channel is not exactly what I was wanting. I complained about it, but since it was so late in the beta, I don't think they were able to make any changes to it. BTW, I'm still running the same build that was released last Friday. I only got a new Terms of Use message this morning. There wasn't anything else to download.

My favorite new feature is most likely the new ESPN app. For those that have participating ISPs, it's great! Just wished it was available to everybody. Just another reason why I'll never buy cable or satellite TV ever again. Of all the other app updates I like, Netflix is my next favorite. Love the ability to search titles & not just streaming content either. But other than that the rest of the dashboard apps I'll probably never use or at least not regularly.

Other notable features are the new family settings and easier access to account management and privacy settings.

All in all a great update. I probably only had one bug the whole time and even then it didn't take them very long to fix it. My biggest pet peeve of the whole experience was not being able to submit to Connect. Didn't really feel like I was really helping much since we were relegated to posting on the special Preview forums. Other peeves was not being able to voice chat except in games. Didn't realize how useful cross game & party chat was until I wasn't able to use it.

Anyway, that's it for my feedback. That is until I get Kinect to try out. That's going to be the best test of the dash. Can't wait!

I want less things at the dashboard. :p Wish I had full control over what tabs appear since I do not ever intend to use the Zune/Music/Videos sections ever.

My favorite hate of the new system is how they removed the ability to 1-click add a movie to your instant queue in netflix. I really don't need to get to "search" from anywhere, it's not like I'm browsing through the list and suddenly think "Oh God! I must search immediately! I can't wait!".

Speaking of, I tried Zune out for the first time last night for music. It was actually quite nice. I think $15 a month is too much still but it's a good service for those really into music. I was able to find some really old songs that I didn't think would be on there like this.

Wish they had this on Lips/Rockband :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wogBVvIBXOU

 I actually do this. A movie or an actor will trigger another movie (mostly TV shows) in my head and I insta-search. Blame me.

Oh damn, Zune pass for 150 USD a year is nice. Is that available in the US now? Or do we still have to wait til WP7 launches?

Can't say I'm hugely impressed. S'ok, but I'm not sure I prefer it or not to the old UI. I get the feeling it's all been done for the sake of Kinect, something I doubt I'll ever use.

Quick question about using a gamertag on multiple consoles. Dunno, if it's to do with the new update or not (as I've only just started doing this). If I sign in to multiple 360s with the same gamertag (not at the same time) then I get the message "invalid windows live ID bla bla bla" whenever I switch to the other Xbox and have to recover my gamertag on that box to continue. Should switching be easier than that or is there a problem?

I've heard it may be easier to save the gamertag onto a usb driver instead, and move that from console to console. Or simply have two gamertag's I guess...

Gamertags have always been designed such that they're not allowed to be used on multiple consoles at the same time. It requires you to "Recover" your Gamertag and up until last year that process was always convoluted. Now it just needs your Windows Live ID email address & password. With that said I would highly recommend just storing your GamerTag on an USB thumb drive and just swap them between consoles. That doesn't require Recovering your Gamertag every time use it.

BTW, not sure of your use, but you do know that you'll need to move save games between consoles too? Also, any content you purchase(even free ones) on one console will be associated with that console & the associated Gamertag going forward. Not a big deal if you always log into Xbox Live, but if you don't have a Xbox Live connection that content won't work if it's not on the system you originally downloaded it on.

Well yes, I'm fairly sure that would be the biggest motivation for Microsoft to have done this redesign.

I have to say I applaud them for it - while Move works fine with the XMB, they could have done a lot more on that front or in the smaller optional applications that you can extend it with. Of course Microsoft didn't have much of a choice, but they have tried their best to make their OS work well with Kinect and now it looks very good (if a bit slow)

Yeah, I was aware of the terms-of-use restrictions on downloadables. Both consoles will be online whenever they're in use so that ain't a biggie. Think I may well take the advice of putting the gamertag onto a usb drive to be honest - it seems like the simplest solution. The likelihood is that one of the boxes will be used mostly for gaming, the other for streaming video from my NAS.

I think it'd have liked a bit more if it had just given the option of keeping the original tile-into-the distance look. I can understand why they didn't, but I just felt you could see a lot more on the screen with that look. At the moment you can only see what, five (?) tiles horizontally, which seems a little too few for me.

A bit slow? Compared to what? Previous versions? PS3? I have no experience with the latter, but I do with the former and it's not slow compared to that. In fact, it's a bit speedier in general. The only complaint I've ever had with speed has been the Game Library, but it's been like that since the beginning and only because I lot more downloadable titles than most people.

I was talking about controlling with Kinect, not the general speediness of NXE.

I don't see why it's automatically being assumed that the new look GUI for the 360 has been specifically designed for Kinect. Yes, there is the separate Kinect Hub, but other than that I can't see the "flat panels" being any more helpful for Kinect than the previous "isometric panels"

Personally, I think it's more likely that the Xbox GUI is being brought in line to have a similar look to the Windows 7 Media Center and new Windows 7 Phone. I think the Kinect association is tenuous, with the exception that the introduction of Kinect obviously meant changes deep within the GUI for gesture/voice recognition, and it seemed a good idea to bring in this visual upgrade for platform consistency at the same time.

As to the GUI itself... I like it. I wasn't sure at the start of the beta, but within a week it grew on me to the point that now, if I use the Facebook app (that still supports the older look) it appears positively old-fashioned.

I think it's also been simplified to make it similar to the ui on winmo7 phones, to keep the experience consistent across devices.

Tried it for a while as well, it is really nice. I'm on an iPhone right now, but when I switch to winmo7 I'll consider getting zune pass since it will probably work nicely on that phone.
