Xbox 360 w/ HDMI spotted

Will a 360 with HDMI output not have the same problems in regards to scaling as the PS3?

Sorry if this is a stupid question

What does it do to the installed base if they come out with HDMI, after some people have bought the HD-DVD add-on?

What happens if they integrate the HD-DVD drive as many suspect?

And then come out with games on HD-DVD, maybe at first as special editions?

Will such a splintering of the installed base bring resentment from those who bought early and were told -- and they parroted -- how HD-DVD wasn't needed for games and HDMI wasn't important unless ICT was turned on?

Who says they will release games on hddvd? even if they intergrate the hddvdrive that still doesnt mean game are allowed to be published on hddvd.

this has nothing to do with hd dvd and upscaling problems I THINK

but the questions raises, woudlnt you have the same quality as with VGA output since the scaler is analog and passes it to the dhmi output?

Pics just bring up blank page. I'm at work, but usually when the filter kicks in, I get this big, you are trying to be naughty page with the corporate logo. Anybody else having any problems?

MS has apparently acknowledged this as a misprint, but it does lend credibility to the notion that a new XBox variant may be on the horizon.

They cant build an HDDVD drive into the machine until it reaches DVD performance equal to what theyve got now.
Theyd still want to have a core package, and if thats the case the games rely on the current level of SD-DVD performance to work properly. AFAIK DVD performance on current HD-DVD drives is below what theyve got now so putting an HD drive in a core pack would hurt the games.

Even the premium pack would suffer because games arent designed to take advantage of a HD for caching.

Is there any news about a 2x HD-DVD drive coming anytime soon?

Or perhaps they are releasing the rumored HDMI cable and including it as a pack-in on the LP bundle. Tomorrow is the big launch for Video Marketplace so maybe we get other announcements as well.

I don't understand what the advantage would be to put the HD-DVD drive in the box ever. It's not a cost savings for MS, as the add-on would be more profitable. Keeping the add-on means the interface, support model, instructions, etc. are the same for every user. They could bundle them or at least price the components in a way where its still a tremendous value, $199 XBox 360 + $99 HD-DVD for example. As an integrated component it would only serve to fuel the fire that one day some games may require HD-DVD. It could be a security risk to allow another drive type to launch signed code. It goes deeper than simply performance differences between the drives. I know a few people don't like the idea of an add-on, and maybe by the time the next next generation of XBox rolls around it will be different. But for this generation, I can't imagine what would motivate Microsoft to include HD-DVD as an integrated component of the 360.

What "rumoured cable"? If MS releases an X360 with HDMI, you can use any HDMI cable ever created since the dawn of HDMI... Though i'm sure there could be MS-branded $40 HDMI cables, when you can get one for $5 online.

I dont think we'll ever see the DVD-based version ever disappear completely because MS has said they want to get to a 129 or $99 360 at some point this lifecycle. If they were to pack an HD-DVD drive in the unit, i think it would only be if the format entrenches itself and shows some staying power.

There is no cost advantage (and in turn a price advantage) to MS, thats clear but there is the strategic value of promoting the competing format to BR. The more value HD-DVD players have by virtue of installed base and support, the less relative value the PS3 has in terms of movie playback.

I think the HDMI thing is a definite though, regardless of the optical drive strategy.

God please be true, My bravia hates the 360's 1080p settings in both component and RGB. If they just put an HDMI port by default I wouldnt have any issues!

I wasn't referring to a new 360 with HDMI port that you could buy a standard cable for. There have been rumors over the past few months about an HDMI cable being released (like the VGA cable) that would plug into the proprietary port on the back of existing 360 consoles.

Isn't the scaler chip in the 360 analog? If so, I don't want just an hdmi cable, I want a digital chip with hdmi port.

It's been very nearly a full year since the console came out. And people are still clinging to that idea?

Anyway if this SKU does have HDMI, I will buy it in a heart beat. Unfortunately the thing does not go on sale till the 21st of Dec...

People will remain hopeful as long as companies like Toshiba keep hinting at it. This is the only link I can find for now (from 9/30) but there have been a few other articles about it.

More news on the HD-DVD front: the price of the HD-DVD option for the Xbox 360 system has been announced as C$199, bringing the cost of an Xbox package capable of playing back the discs at C$700. Curiously, the HDMI connection scheme uses a non-standard cable that would become available “soon afterâ€￾ the introduction of the player itself in November; but at additional cost. Without HDMI, users would have to rely on un-content-protected component video for high-definition movie playback: not a safe bet over the long haul.

I only mentioned it as a possibility since it would make much more sense then a third SKU that leaves early adopters out in the cold.

It's not like games on HD DVD. I don't think many people complained when Nintendo released DSLite.
