Xbox 360 Unstable?

Mine crashes after a while, depending on the game. I can pretty much play Geometry Wars for hours, PGR3 and Kameo can last a decent time, but PD0 crashes my XBox within 10-15 minutes. Backward compatibility titles can also crash pretty quickly.

The rear of the unit is extremely hot after playing, and I don't feel much air coming out of the fans, which makes me think one or both fans may be defective (MS is replacing my unit).

And I put it in a well ventilated area (on my computer desk, since I'm using the 2nd VGA plug of my 22" monitor to play). I definitely wouldn't put it in an enclosed cabinet. The MPS (Monster Power Supply) doesn't run too hot, though.

OTOH, the vents on the sides of the unit are very cool (it's just ultra-hot on the rear).

Well played Kameo, PGR3, COD2 & NHL2k6 all extensively, never had a single lockup or freezing, 2 weeks in....

I never tried the experiement of sandwhiching it between recievers, too much hassle to move everything around, and it's vertical now and look so damn good!

Video demo for disc scratch...

Now imagine you are playing games on a vertical 360 then it's laid down unexpectedly (children pulling power cord, earthquake, etc)

Wow that's pretty brutal, good to know though. Good thin I don't live on any earthquake faults! lol

At least it scractches the outsides of the disc so most would probably be playable still, but MS better have a good disc replacement plan in effect .

imo disc replacement programs for video games are something that should've been implemented years ago.

 We now are talking about the stability of a system in the face of earthquakes? Seriously, if the box tips over while a game is being played, and things get damaged, that's called "Shit Happens."

I haven't had one crash yet. This disks do get a bit warm though. I think it is because it's 12X speed. On PC most of the game comes off of the HDD so you don't notice the disks as much. Still, after installing large backup files from a 16X dvd drive, those disks get hot too....and in a shorter amount of time. This is probably why MS chose a 12X drive, it is at the limit of how fast you can spin a disk for long periods of time. Why really need holographic disks so we can get a great transfer rate without much actual disk speed.

Well how about a strong wind ;)

360 uses a desktop DVD drive, if it's a slim drive for laptop this might not happen.

My buddy and i both have systems . While mine runs cool his runs hot . NOt to hot that i think it will cause problems , but u can see a diffrence easily

Does it cost more to have the slim drive? Why not just design the drive so that you lock the disc to the rotator/spinner?

A strong wind wouldn't blow this thing over, there's no way it realistically gets knocked over unless you bump into it.

And how much are 12x DVD slim drives? I can only find 8x, and they're like $100.

8x - $169

8x - $139

Looks like throughput is a problem for the slim drives, I'd rather have 12x read speed sicne my console doesn't move around while I'm playing it, and I don't suffer from 50km/h winds inside my home.

This isn't an issue limited to xbox360. It's an issue with any console or computer. My ps2 had a disc damaged when it was knocked off its perch (about 15cm from the floor) and the unit wasn't even plugged in.

News flash: Impacts can cause damage.

Have you seen the linked video? They add no impact on the console. Just tilting it.

Didn't you notice the emoticon or your sarcasm detector malfunctioning?

I watched the video. Tilting isn't what you call that. They moved the drive from vertical to horizontal and then back to vertical. I guarantee you that if I did that with my ps2 it would scratch the disc. It is causing the disc to impact on the drive, it's hardly anything surprising.

I can't believe someone brought up earthquakes as something that might cause the 360 to scratch disks. Look buddy, if an earthquake makes your 360 scratch a disk, that'll be the least of your problems! You're in an earthquake! Try to put things in proper perspective.

Anyway, an 8x low profile DVDROM might cost $100 to buy retail, but from a manufacturer ordered in large quantities I assure you it wouldn't cost a cent more than a full height unit and might even cost less. And the 8x spindle motor could easily be replaced with a 12x unit. It is even possible it is doable via a firmware change as the 8x unit's motor might already be capable of spinning that fast, and is simply limited for other reasons (power, heat etc).

A better "quake" example is, let's put 360 vertically on a bed, and a fat guy sits beside it and he jumps up when his Ferrari crashes in the TV screen...

Or what if you balanced it on the head of a pin...

It could happen!!

Now if they had used a Tempurpedic swedish mattress, they could have a 360 and a glass of red wine on the bed without any spillage or scratches! :)

...And then have it catch fire from having most of its airvents blocked and torching the house. Great idea! ;)
