Xbox 360 slim hardware thread

So you're comparing a 2 core, single threaded CPU designed from the ground up for low power consumption to a 3 core hyperthreaded CPU designed by IBM, the same core that apple moved away from due to claims of power inefficiency? :)
Just wanted to point out that the CPU design used in the xenon (and Cell) was never used in any Apple product at all, nor any other personal computer whatsoever. It's not a derivative of any of the G-series PowerPC chips.

So Apple couldn't have moved away from it, since they never used it! :p

What are you talking about, the Core was available at $299

But this new one aint no Core. If you're going to compare the new system to a launch system, then the Pro system at $400 would have been a better comparison.

The specs of the systems is irrelevant but I see this is 12 o'clock high to you; there should be no 360 sku that is at a launch price, in this case, $299 4.5 years in to the generation but to your point the difference is a hdd. Without seeming to use false equivalency...is there a PS3 that is $499 (and you had to know someone to get a 20GB)?

And a HDMI port, and a Wireless N adapter, and 2 more USB ports, and a smaller case, and a built-in optical out, and a Kinect port, and support for USB storage, and a totally new dashboard that has Netflix, Zune, Facebook, Twitter & Indie Games markeplace, etc, etc.

Yes, I get it that $300 is way too much for a system that it almost 5 years old, I said as much with my first reply. But you can't escape the truth that the box now has loads more value in it for that same $300. The market will determine if that price is worthy. Myself, I've flirted buying it. It's not worth an extra $100-$140 for. So I've decided I'll just put that money toward Kinect instead.

Don't know anybody that has a PS3 except those here on the net. But no, there's not a $500 PS3. But it's not fair comparison since the PS3 started at $600 and the market saw to it that Sony drop that price considerably & quickly. There hasn't been that same amount of pressure on Microsoft with the 360.

Puts the size in perspective. Just wished there was a PS3 Slim in there.

The problem with value add is that it might not shift pre conditioned purchase impluses. If a family's entertainment budget is $199 for a gaming console, then you're in trouble. Now, you and I can see the value add but for the masses, they look at the content in the box AFTER they see the price they want.

Having a cheaper price of entry, plus accessories is a much better incentive for mass consumers than a higher price with all the bells and whistles.

It's all moot point as MS has already stated that the arcade unit will be replaced down the road (once inventory is dumped) and as I stated, I expect a price drop in fall anyway. They're just trying to maximize from the early adopters. Summer isn't a big selling season for console, so need to drop the price now and drown out the buzz. Their current startegy, if it plays out as I imagine, is best for them (not necessarily us).

btw, I'm gonna trade my current setup and get one when I can :D

Looks pretty swish, very CE goods, and smaller than I imagined. I suppose the HDD caddy adds a bit too to 360 Fatso.

Is the single package CPU/GPU thing confirmed? No autopsies yet...

Also: I don't think the X-clamp was the problem, it was the heat from the GPU.

Fantastic. If only this single (and presumably, cheaper) chip was available five years ago for the launch ;-)

Who was the guy with the "no microsoft rumors, only microsoft leaks" tagline? Consider yourself patted on the back, sir.

I always forget just how honking huge the PS3 Fat was.

I think the 360 S is also smaller than the PS3 Slim. At least going by that photo.

And thank goodness, it looks like it's still stackable.
