Xbox 360 slim hardware thread

slight OT, but how much do you think I should sell my good functioning 20GB Original (w/1 controller) for?

There are no trade-ins in Singapore yet and a friend incidentally wants an Xbox for FIFA.. don't really want to profit off him, just want an agreeable price.

Here in the states , you'd get $120 for it with the current promotions at gamestop. The systm with no drive sells for $130 I believe used. Normaly you get $60 for the 360

I just picked up mine at GS. Apparently I was one of the lucky ones that got it only because I pre-ordered, which I did only 2 days ago:) Apparently demand has been pretty good as they have sold out their 2nd shipment and have customers still asking for it.

I got $61 in trade-in for my Wi-Fi adapter (wasn't using anyway), a controller and a headset. I can get $31 more for my 20GB HDD once I transfer over my content.

I had to pick up a transfer cable, which they only had new, but altogether it came out to $208 and I still have my 20GB to trade-in as well as the option to sell back the transfer cable for $7.50. One great thing about buying electronics in Guam is that there is no sales tax.

GS really does rip you off on some of these buy backs.

I don't know why they'd have the 512MB internal memory card, since they have a 250GB hard drive.

On the other hand, I just had an idea about how they could turn this machine into an "Arcade". Remove the wireless card (it plugs into an internal USB port) and plug a 512 MB USB drive into that port. That would mean that the arcade wouldn't have wireless, but it's an option.

I think they might just throw in a external USB memory stick (the new equivalent of a card) of some type. Hopefully a 8GB one.

That would eliminate the need for internal storage. First run Arcades didn't have any internal storage....you had to buy a separate memory card, as i did with my launch arcade. And I paid $40 for a 64 MB one at that time LOL (as well as 299 for the arcade of course). My how things have improved...Now you get that same arcade plus 512 MB internal storage+2 games for $149, and $40 buys you an 8GB USB flash drive.

And IIRC, when Arcades initially began to come with memory in the box, it was also an external card. Only later did they switch to internal.

The more I think about it the more it makes sense. Including 8GB would make the arcade a much more attractive purchase option, as well as allow arcade purchasers to dabble in DLC (theoretically making some increased revenue for MS), while probably being quite low cost.

Edit: Hmm, brand 8GB flash drives seem to go for a minimum of $18 newegg (probably essentially wholesale), so that might actually be too significant a cost burden on the arcade BOM....

On the Slim Arcade front I would suspect they would have to go for 1GB at minimum though? They are increasing the storage demands all the time and every year it seems they obsolete at least one level of Arcade memory due to some important requirement like NXE etc. I think they may as well go straight to 2GB or 4GB because at least that would be 'good enough' for basic DLC and a few Arcade titles.

The Arcades always had storage included (whenever it was memory cards or internal), the SKU your thinking were the Xbox 360 core model. It also had a wired controller rather than a wireless one.

Man, this thing is WAY quieter than my system. A buddy got one and I'm tempted to get it just for the space savings alone. I'd be able to fit my PS3 / 360 / Wii on one shelf...ahhhhh!

they can take that , i just hope they keep a hardrive in it .

The hard drive is useless cost now that there are a few thousand games which already work off a DVD, and 10-15 million Arcade units without a HDD. 1 GB of the slowest flash RAM on earth should be enough.

Any guesses why the Wifi module is on a detachable "daughterboard" ;-) ?

Personally I'm strongly doubting they'll remove the wi-fi in Arcade like so many are saying.

Dont forget it's a balance, they really dont want to make one SKU vastly more palatable than another (for the price) or nobody will buy the "bad" one. I'm pretty sure including wi-fi in one SKU and not changing the price relation will tip that balance too heavily. Especially if they keep pricing the adapter at $100. It would also necessitate keeping the adapter around instead if streamlining and eliminating it.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I would say "ease of manufacturing" myself.

Considering the mounting points for the external wifi module is gone as someone reported, I doubt they'd remove the internal board.

The adapter is a value even now. It offers 5ghz wireless n while the xbox s only does 2.4ghz
