xbox 360 confirmed pricing

God this sucks.

So just one configuration is targeted for the Holiday release?

Yeah, given that we know we’re going to have to hustle to produce all that people are going to want, that kind of keeps life a lot simpler for the retailers. If you said, “Look we’re coming to market with three configurations, and we were in short supply, and we got the wrong mix of configurations,â€￾ it would just compound all the problems. We’re really quite excited about the proposition for having just the one configuration in market particularly for this holiday.

Most average customers probably wont even miss the hard drive. As long as they get their $299 Xbox 360 they'll be satisfied.

Until they try to play a game and realise they need to get a 40$ Memcard or a 100$ HD to be able to save?
Anyone know if the 299$ pack contains a Component-Cable? Im not quite certain if it fits the "Standard-AV" descripting, seein as they sell a "Component HD AV Cable" for $39.99

they won't be able to save games tho, add the money for a mem card and then you're begining to thiink 'what the hell - may as well get the top one', the base pack is a VERY clever move by MS and a red herring (sp?). I think it'll only sell over xmas, when parents just want to get the console, then the kids will be in to buy the bits...with clever parents buying the top version.

While I think there's a good reason people will opt for the top version - this stunt will split their userbase regardless and could backfire. I'm sitting here wondering if this move was worth it, knowing that chances are high that developers now face a situation of knowing that the majority may have no hard-drive...

In anycase, I'm more than interested to see how Sony reacts to this.

If theres no component cable in the $299 version..then that will be just wrong!!! Of all the things that should be in the base system...a component cable should be on the top of the list.

Also, the $399 version just seems much more cost effective. I dont' know why they (Microsoft) are even releasing a $299 version...that boggles my mind. I believe that ONE system should be released with all the fixings. The $299 version seems useless simply because your going to have to go out and buy the peripherals that you want after you get the console. After you buy all the stuff you'll be at about the same price range of the $399 version...wtf?

I really would have liked to see each package $50 less, or the core include the hard drive for $299.

At a minimum, I would have to add a wireless adapter and a second (wireless) controller...and that would push the prices up another $150. That's $550 before even getting any games. I think MS just priced me out of the holiday season. Hopefully, MS is planning on a price drop when the PS3 hits.

Well, firstly I want to readily admit that I was completely wrong in my assumption that Microsoft would launch at $299 with one SKU, hard drive included. That being said - I think this is a big mistake on their part. On the bright side, they are going to sell a number of the more expensive systems, and their peripheral pricing is akin to a gold mine. But... is it too much a gold mine? The costs of the wireless controllers, Wi-Fi add on, and the rest is going to stand out when the PS3 ships with only wireless controllers, Wi-Fi standard, next-gen drive, etc etc...

I don't know - obviously the logic behind the move was clear, but I'm not sure it was the right choice. I would be lying if I didn't say I was quite surprised waking up and reading this news this morning.

Its probably going to be about $550(or little over that) for the bundled version here in Canada and probably about $520 for the non-HDD version. Thats after all the taxes an all.
It could be more or less that.

I think the $299 version is there to sucker random joe user into buying the system at a cheaper cost but make them pay once they realize they need a memory card and decide to get wireless controllers. I doubt many will actually buy the hard drive. The $400 package is there to appease the people who are screaming bloody murder at the price of the perephrials.

Microsoft is definately going for a no-loss strategy this time. The console itself may lose some money at the $299 price point, but they make it back with what they are charging for perephrials. This also makes sense why they are charging the license fees for 3rd party gear. They don't want madcatz packaging a $49.99 hard drive or a $29.99 wireless controller. It's how they plan to make their money.

Ok, this is just my first post but I have been reading for well over a yr.

if the premium is $400, and the PS3 is expected to be more expensive than the 360, what can be the price for that? Although I agree that MS has left a huge open door for Sony to step in with some good pricing and kick them out of the market

At least we should be able to get any 3rd party standard wireless to ethernet adpater...and while it may not be as "integrated" or be as unobtrusive, could save $25-$50 over the MS wireless network adapter...

The 360 itself is still just one configuration. Everything else is just an add-on, and I'm pretty sure 2.5" 20GBs are in huge supply sitting around "rotting" somewhere. So technically I think he was accurate.

Personally, I still feel somewhat shafted. I understand that $399 looks great COMPARED to the base model, but my feeling is that the base model shouldn't have been there in the first place. Which is why I am somewhat up in arms about the price. My lust for jaggie free HD gaming glory just dropped a notch or two. Keep in mind I had two of these damn things pre'd, I'm not about to drop a G on this sh*..stuff. Damn! 2 "real" 360s and 2 wifis (maybe only one if my D-link wireless gets 360 certified) $900-$1000 and I havent bought a game or even paid for LIVE yet. This is NOT going to get past the gate-keeper (read: wife)
So I imagine I'm going to get a call in the next couple days about my pre's, one of them is going to have to go adios, nos vemos pronto.
I was hoping $299+$50(wifi)+$60(Live)+$40(extra wifi controller) = $449
Now im $399+$99(wifi)+$60(Live)+$50(extra wifi controller) = $608

...and I still haven't bought a game...damn, damn, damn!

my boss got into work at 9am and we already got 2 cancels .... which is odd didn't think it would spread that fast .

The major problem is calling up all these people and telling them there are now two versions and having them come in and change the preorder . Its going to be a huge mess

I'm prob going to take off my 300$ today

I just cancel my preorder.

I dont really understand why this a big deal? I dont think sony said HDD is gonna be standard and Nintendo isnt using one. Besides MMPORGS I dont know any genres this gen that require a HDD as bare minimum.

I don't think you can equate the price of the 360 to the PS3. I personally think that it won't be crazy to see a $499 price tage for the PS3....but if somehow i'm wrong...and the PS3 does come out for $399...then wow...but thats WAY to far off to speculate on pricing...look what happened with the 360, this was a total surprise to alot of people...but I had a inclination that MS would shoot out 2 SKUs.

I'll probably just buy a wireless bridge with built in hub for the same price, heh.

BTW, I'm not so bummed about the lack of HD. We all knew that no games could force its use anyway, so it was pretty much relegated to being a big memory card from the get go. You can still do things like streaming custom soundtracks over a network and from external devices, so I don't really see the big problem with the existence of that SKU.

Also, did you REALLY expect component cables out of the box? I figured composite was a given. There are still a LOT of people out there that don't have TVs that support component and things like this generally cater to the majority.
