xbox 360 confirmed pricing

Why is it even interesting? I doub't it is any more credible a price estimate than the 360 with a harddrive people were preordering in masses for $300.
when I pre-ordered at ebgames.. they had it listed as $499 because there was no information

It's only on the DVD tray. The $399 version has the ugly chrome finish. The $299 is just white pearl like the rest of the machine.

OMG..thats so fricken CHEAP!!!! ARGHH...I had an image of grandure and beauty...of fully silver 360.....err..umm...ARGHHH!!! That picture crushed my image (the one showing the premium package and its "metal" tray cover). Its like hearing a hot radio person (voice wise) and building up an image of them...you finally go online to see what they look like..and your hopes and thoughts all get crushed. :(

EXACTLY

there was NO misleading of the price at pre-order for $299. That's just wrong. The only place where $299 was talked about was on the internet message boards.

I was told at the store that I was pre-ordering for a system that could cost as much as $500.

My understanding was that the "premium" version has a chrome dvd tray (Yeah, definitely very sparkly) 0_0 while the standard one has a white tray. Or rather, "the xbox 360" and "the core version", as they are now so coveniently known as.

Easy now Blue. ;)

I'm sure for $20 you can get yourself a cool all chrome face plate.

Hell I may even get you one for Christmas if it means that much to you. ;) :D

That would be the first (and only) faceplate i'll get....it will look weird with the white exterior (on the back end). But I will mod...and I will probably ruin my 360 and which would be like throwing $399 down the drain...but my dream of a fully silver'ized (I know its not a word) Xbox360 will come true!

I don't know if I missed it in this mountain of a thread but has the optical out Surround sound been discussed already?

My understanding is that only the HD cables (premium version) have the hook up for optical sound.

the Core only comes composite cables for sound.

let's face it the Core system is a low ball lead in to the "REAL" system. :D

OTOH A LOT of cost conscious people may get one though (parents buying for their kids maybe?)

I hope people aren't foolish enough to spend a lot of money on faceplates. Those are probably as overpriced as the other accessories, if not more.

Lets see if they starts selling 3-packs at the same price.

Yes, that is correct. The VGA and Component cables have optical output.

Priced to sell, rather than priced to take into account manufacturing costs

Speculation over the price of the PlayStation 3 has been fuelled this week by the appearance of comments from NVIDIA chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang, who compared his firm's new approach to graphics card pricing to Sony's PS2 plans.

Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has repeatedly hinted that the PS3 is going to be priced at a premium level - famously commenting that he wanted it to be a device consumers would be prepared to work overtime to afford.

However, Huang's comments about the pricing are more vague - and seem to suggest that Sony's focus is, as with previous consoles, about finding the right price point to encourage sales rather than being directly concerned with manufacturing costs.

Responding to a question in a Beyond3D interview about the price point of the new GeForce 7800 graphics part, Huang said: "We need to price it at a level the enthusiasts will buy it at, that's the way that we think about pricing."

"We think about the pricing of this in the same way that Sony thinks about PlayStation 3's," he continued. "Its not about how much is costs, its about what is the price it needs to sell at, and we need to figure out how to make money underneath that."

Sony's consoles have so far been sold at a loss for the early part of their lifespan in an attempt to build up an installed base quickly, but the hardware has gradually become profitable as the manufacturing costs drop off more rapidly than the price cuts at the consumer end.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is expected to launch later this year at a price point of roughly $300, although some sources have suggested that Ken Kutaragi's repeated allusions to a high PS3 price point could be pushing Microsoft to ponder a higher launch price.

The PlayStation 3, which will launch in spring 2006 in some territories, will have more built-in functionality than its rival - but whether that will justify a significantly higher price tag for many consumers is a theory that has yet to be tested.

teh prophet!!!!

Nice call, I wonder if KK's allusions to a higher priced PS3 is what caused MS to go with the 2 SKU approach. Maybe MS caught on to Sony's plans and thought they could ambush them with a two SKU setup.....maybe..just maybe..

as the world turns.....

People seem to be under the impression that these huge corporations are constantly making moves to one-up eachother on a month-to-month basis. The fact is, 99% of the decisions you see announced were actually decided at least 6 to 12 months before you ever heard them.

Though I don't think it was the case here, historically that hasn't always been true. Certain companies made very sudden reactionary decisions to competitor movement in the past (although in the examples that spring to mind, with pretty disasterous consequences).

if you think MS is reacting to sony's comments about price, i think you may have you head in the sand.

MS had the specs for thier console completed a long time ago. Tthey had all the accesories planned out a long itme ago. They have known for at least a year if not longer how much this system would cost them. It was all a matter of finding the combination that made sense in thier eyes. The 2 sku approach had NOTHING in my opionion to do with any comments or rumors surrounding sony and the PS3 price. The main factor IMO, is that MS is the only next gen console releasing this fall.

Sony is being reactionary IMO. Just the way they annouced thier console was meant to be a "one up" over the xbox. Anyway, it's all a matte rof opinion.

Went to an EB here today at a mall i was close by(Canada, Ontario). The guy behind hte counter said that the premium ver will cost $500. Didnt bother about the lower end, or ask about it. Also stated that in some polls(Didnt as which one stupidly) that 99% of the people polled would buy the premium ver over the basic one.

Either way, $500 GODDDAM $500 smacker?!?!?! Crap thats a lot of money , with taxes that will bring it to $575. I didnt think of it at first for some reason , but that is a lot of money to be spending on a console. Plus have to buy an HDTV. Which for a 26" which is all i want in my room will cost around the same. DAMN, i would rather have an hdtv, and watch HDTV stuff, on a regular basis, other than just to play games atm. At least with the ps3 i have Bluray, so i can watch movies in addition.

The more i think of it, the more i like nintendos idea. With the cheap and non focus on HD.

LOL, never thought the price would scare me like that, but i can think of a whole lot of better ways to spend that money.

***********EDIT $500 CAD *************
Yea not bad concerning conversion i know JVD , but with our beloved TAXES, it gets to $575
