hey now, maybe if MGS2 was actually a good game we wouldn't have this problem! :p
MGS2 was a pretty good game, granted not the best of the series imo, but definately not anything less than a good game in its time. Im pretty sure it got good scores all around, 8's 9's and 10's with most major sites and mags IIRC. Just because you didnt like it doesnt mean it wasnt a good game. Hell, I didnt like oblivion, and I'm sure theres people who will say its an amazing experience.

Ok now so I'm dropping this squabble for the benefit of the thread - I regret ever bringing it up! :)

Scooby was drunk, and misinterpreted my 'SC doesn't compete with MGS' comment as being a slight against SC, which it was never intended to be.

So let's get back to the topics at hand (if possible).

Now that the thread's been derailed, I'll add my opinion too. I agree with xbdestroya on how the two franchises don't really compete with each other. Sure they both have stealth gameplay elements, but then would you consider Thief and Splinter Cell competitors?

MGS will always have the comic book styled characters and far-out plot (which is the main reason why I play it), which I think fans of the series have grown to love and will always come back to play for. And SC will has the high-tech gadgetry and serious international espionage angle to it. Both games rely heavily on their mood and storylines to attract fans, and not just gameplay, so that's why I don't see them really competing with each other.

Edit: Oh, and I voted for more Halo games... which is the obvious choice :)

Halo !!!
Its quite difficult to just list one as most announcement in this event are quite significant. I am very interested in seeing how Halo Wars turns out.

XNA, Live Anywhere, the phrase PC/360 will mean a very different thing, not this year, probably towards mid-2008 and beyond though. Fanatics, they will scream, "but, but, but its on PC too..." to that I say, thanks! I'll take that check as well ;) I think it will be expected for most games to be on both.

EDIT: I voted for the Live Anywhere...I have my reasons

Hmm.. I wondered who the other knuckle draggers were who voted with me.. Still one missing, anybody want to fess up?

Live! Anywhere is going to simply be huge in the coming months and years, IMO. It is the integration which is the entire purpose beyond MS's entering the console space to begin with.

I still have difficulty with how many people on a tech forum continue to overlook or downplay its importance.

At least there's three of us that see the light. Halo? Splinter Cell? Exclusive Games To Be Named Later?

IMO, those things don't even compare. They're not even on the same level.

By the way, what's up with X06's second day? We haven't seen or heard anything new, although there's supposed to be stuff about Fable 2, Mass Effect, and so on...

IMHO it feels that Microsoft has a little too PC-centric view of gaming. Releasing Doom is a nice thing to do but does it attract console gamers? How about if they had released a Sonic-game? The things Microsoft do attract me, but I'm a PC-gamer and still IMHO, they should release much more gimmics.

Getting Guitar Heroe 2 to 360 is the best thing Microsoft has done this far.

I dont think MS did that.

Activision has confirmed that it will bring hit music title Guitar Hero to multiple formats in 2007.
Speaking at Goldman Sachs Communacopia XV Conference, CEO and chairman of Activision Robert Kotick revealed the news as part of his keynote speech.
Kotick confirmed that Guitar Hero would appear "on every significant new format", while discussing intentions for yearly updates and building franchises across a number of key Activision titles.

as a matter of fact, I had emailed RedOctane a long time ago asking about GH@360,
and they replied with something like: of course they are looking at opportunities for all consoles, 360 included, but -as usual- there is a schedule involded in everything.
and latest things happening probably helped more than troubled.

I can see why so many people have voted for the Halo announcements as having the biggest impact but I think that kind of misses the point, by my understanding the point of the question was which of the announcements would swing your purchase from PS3 (or Wii) to 360 and help MS "win" this gen. If the Halo announcements are a big deal to you the chances are you are already an Xbox fan so while welcome it's not going to drive that many console sales.

I voted Bioshock, it looks like it could be a cracking game and I really hoped it was coming to PS3 but I guess I will need to buy the 360 version or splash out for a big PC upgrade, Alan Wake looks really promising too, will be interesting to see how well these two compare VS the PC versions.

I dunno. Bioshock is probably a timed exclusive, so I don't know how much that is going to matter. Exclusives, at this time, won't have such a big impact yet, it's too early in the lifespan of a console, and it takes a lot of marketing to make people aware and believe that a game is actually available only for one platform.

On the other hand, the Halo guys have built a name for themselves, and that is very strongly linked to exclusivity. Whether it will actually make a big difference, I don't know, but I couldn't see a big(ger) impact from the other news items either. GTAIV will probably have equivalent support for the PS3, so that probably doesn't help, though it should otherwise probably be the runner up, as this game has a very strong following.

However, the biggest game of the next generation isn't going to be GTA, I think, but more likely something new.

You could very well be right there, definitely some great new IP's coming along but I am still hoping that R* reinvent the franchise for this gen, I can't see the scale of the jump being on a par with them going 3d the last gen but there are enough fans of the series to justify a major effort at redefining the genre.

No no no, not at all...

The question doesn't have anything to do with pulling people away from Sony or Nintendo; rather simply in gaining 'momentum' for 360's own install base expansion. I really don't think purchasers abandoning either of the other platforms need be quantified (or even assessed) whatsoever here. It simply comes down to: MS made some announcements - which was the most important for their long-term efforts?

Certainly announcements like Bioshock and GTA IV put emphasis on an 'us or them' focus, but other announcements are more general. So not that there aren't some *anti* Sony announcements MS made in a sense, just that the thread itself is not inherently cast in that light.

Actually MS had released the Sonic demo just a few hours before the Doom announcement.
