World Cup 2006

Joe Cole's goal was quite something --just a cold-eyed assasin on that one.

On the other hand, pathetic defending by England on Sweden's second goal. England's set-piece defenses looked very wobbly in this game.

That last goal was pure comedy. WTH!
You know the smug commentators were tempting fate when they announced England's victory before the final whistle.. Bloody eejits. I can't stand ITV's commentary team, they is such muppets (not only cos they tempt fate but because they make the most assinine remakrs at times).

and against holding isnide the penalty box, but that's another story....

Yeah because people don't know the laws of the game. All the holding and pushing in the box goes on as the corner or free kick is lined up. The ref never blows up on it. As soon as the kick is taken shirts are released and the ball is attacked. If anybody is impeded or pulled over at that stage fouls are given.

Why? Because the ref can't call a foul whilst the ball is dead!

Too true, post match analysis is poor as well. did you see the BBC show at 10.30pm? Hansen, Shearer and Dixon explained exactly the basics of defending a corner, what Beckham did wrong and how it should have been defended. They also absolved Beckham as any savvy manager would have put somebody who knows how to defend and head a ball on the near post. Totally Sven's fault in getting the wrong kind of player in there. Much more incisive and knowledgable commentary from the BBC.

Gah... There's more than enough holding and shirt-pulling while the ball is in play to go around. The refs just never crack down on it. I know it's hard to fix, but even FIFA have made explicit mention of this problem. Today, if an attacker is holding the shirt of a defending player while he, in turn, has one arm firmly wrapped around the attackers midsection - the referees will let that go for both of them. I say it's unsporting and give them both the yellow card. Sure it would be a bit messy in the transition, but eventually all that crap would stop, and the game would be much more entertaining for it...

BTW: On today's game: Did Larson even touch the ball on the second Swedish goal?

Agreed - I was all but ready to throw the TV out the window if Clive Tyldsley made another snide remark about Theo Walcott during the game. Fair enough, I don't think he should be in the squad either (especially seeing as Sven seems to have no intention of using him), but no need to make constant sideswipes at a player who hasn't even had a minute on the pitch!

Yet again we witness 45 minutes of good football followed by 45 minutes of tripe from England. I don't know what Sven says during his half-time team-talk, but really I wish he'd stop it. He should be banned from the dressing room at half-time.

You know, there's also an opposing team on the pitch. ;) Swedens offensive game was worthless in the first half with static players not running to create viable passes. In the second half there was much more movement making it easier to pass the ball denying the English players the oppurtunity to stress the Swedish players. When Sweden went on the offensive the English game fell apart. They should never have relaxed and settled for a 1-1 score, we could have won this game comfortably if we haven't had so much respect for the English team in the first half.

I hope they take that with in the game against Germany who havent exactly impressed defensively. If we focus on defense in the first half like we did against England and let the Germans play their game we will lose so bad it won't be even funny.

On another note, Group B must have been the weakest group thus far IMO.

I think it might be a fitness problem. England is always overpowering in the first half and in the second they crash and burn. And the substitue players can't make much difference any more if the rest of the team is close to collapsing.

Yeah I know, my comment wasn't intended to belittle the stellar performance of the Swedes in the second half, but he point is if you look back over the England performances of the past 4-5 years there's a very distinct pattern ... the goal against T&T last week was I think the first time that England have scored in the second half of an international in many years. Are you telling me that every team England have played in that time have chosen to play badly in the first half and then buck their ideas up after half-time?

Possibly, but then these players do play at that pace for 90 minutes day-in day-out in the Premier League. Maybe they've been partaking of the German cuisine too much recently (those Currywurst can be pretty addictive I hear).

Dont see how England really have a chance with the way their defense has been. Id see Argentina slicing Englands current defense to shreds, must fix it quick.

wow, the mexican team is getting whipped at 2-0. Portugal is just opening a nice sized can of whoop ass.

epic

In that case I think we can expect a bit of a battle tonight between the Netherlands and Argentine, as both probably would like to avoid playing against Portugal (which is all they're playing for, after all, both already being through to the next round basically)

Mexico have pulled it back to 2-1, and it's now half-time.

Sounds like a good game, why do I have to be at work while this is on? :(

You didn't miss too much, the 2nd half was pretty crappy.

My Guess, Ghanians and Czechs will qualify.

Would be quite a miracle if Ghana makes it.

Italians are usually a bit better than Czechs, but anything's possible with them.
