That was clearly a make up call. No way that was a red card foul.

The red card was well applied.
Both feet directlly in the guy´s ankles. All the shoes´ pins on the ankles. It hurts a lot.

Absolutely! Horrible fouls especially the first one for USA. Completely unneccesary, on the opponents side of the field, faced toward his own goal. Stupid stupid stupid. The second one was clumsy; If you have a yellow card don't cut someone down from behind.

I hope they send that fucktard Derossi back to Italy ASAP. Asswipe.

Heroic defending by the Americans. The last ten minutes had me really nervous.

Wasn't Italian goal an offside? And was the 2nd US goal dissallowed bec'se of offside? :???:

No and yes. :)

The shooter wasn't offside but there's an American "in play" who is off side. Had he been two or maybe three meters away from the balls trajectory the refs might have let it pass. As it was he almost managed to touch the ball and he most certainly was in the way for Buffon to see the ball.

now this is ridiculous ....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5091154.stm

Around 1,000 (Dutch) fans arrived for the Ivory Coast tie in their traditional bright orange trousers - but bearing the logo and name of a Dutch brewery.

To protect the rights of the official beer they were denied entry, so the male fans promptly removed the trousers and watched the game in underpants.

sponsoring a tournamet should mean that u get the tv spots alongside it, can mention it in ur advertising, put the tournament on ur product label, tie in promotions, have only ur prodect sold at the event, etc, etc ....

It should not mean the u can dictate to the fans what they can / cannot wear when attending a match they have payed to see! If that was me being to told to remove my clothing since they promoted a rival beer ... i would be outraged!

FIFA Guidlines said:
A tackle, which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
A flat footed tackle against the leg supporting the weight of the opponent is the kind of foul broken ankles are made of. The referees should have the guts to make that call more often (and against holding isnide the penalty box, but that's another story...).

However, in England's match a English player kicked the ball from the centre circle in the goal after the whistle for the half time had been blown. Certainly he did hear the referee as he was very close. Now, under the Fifa rules that would have been a yellow card offense but yet he received none.
That's not a yellow card because he's not delaying the restart of play.

On the other hand there are referees, who go after the petty fouls, and the game after the first few whistles the game is also very fluent (Merck, Molina).

I agree completely. Way to many interuptions, eg. when the ball is played forward to a player in off-side position but ends up under the control of the defending team, then there is absolutely no reason to stop the game because of the off-side.

hupfinsgack said:
The FIFA tries to solve that problem by indoctrinating the referees which somehow are not chosen by criteria "the best of the best" but by "I don't care as long as they're from all of the world". But the way they're doing it seems to make matters a lot worse, as evidenced by yesterday's matches:

Yeah, it's disastrous. Instead of picking the 2-3 top referee teams from each of Premier league, Serie A, Primera liga, Bundes liga and the south american leagues, they go with complete rookies from eg. Singapore. WTF?

Edit: The Italy-USA match is the first 5-star performance from a ref in the tournament, IMO

Cheer

Really? He missed some horrendous sweater pulls from the US defenders when Italy pushed forward the last 15 minutes. And quite frankly three red cards tell me that the ref didn't get the game under control from the beginning. The decisions were correct but the players became a bit too loose and started playing it rough. Exciting game as it was the US team must feel really shitty about their red cards. They had Italy down for the count, it was only a matter of time.... And they couldn't keep their cool. A shame really.

BTW is there anyone here who think Derossi would have elbowed Ronaldinho instead of a noname American? Such lack of respect for his opponent, it's appalling.

The US and now Australia too showed some good engagement and a few interestung scenes. Positively surprised, the quality has been going steadily upwards.

Italy on the other hand, wtf was that? Total lack of iniciative or passion, really lazy. Someone should give them a good a**kick.

So, Brazil 2 - Aus 0. Aus played really well and with some luck they could have caused an upset, if they beat Croatia then they'll go to next round. Brazil looked average.

Unless Japan beat Brazil by 3 goals (no way!), Australia only need a draw. Agreed about Brazil. They've got great players, but doesn't look like a great team. I'm surprised they played Ronaldo again after hiss piss poor performance against Croatia. Granted, he was (a tiny bit) better today, but even if he continues to improve at this rate throughout the tournament, he'll be no better than mediocre by the final...

Not so much that the Aussies played well, but that brazil played like bums. For fcks sake what is ronaldo doing on the field? Let the younger players have a go at it, they are the ones scoring and making the plays.

epic

Fair play to the Aussies, they showed that a bit of organisation and persistence can be effective against even the most talented of prima donnas. I just hope the England team were watching and took note -- but I seriously doubt it. Honestly I think 2-0 wasn't really a fair result, and if Brazil don't start taking things seriously they'll be on the plane back to Spain and Italy very soon.

France vs South Korea.

Ian Wright laughed his head off literally during the commentary and replay of the Korean goal.

BWAHAHAHA.

Edit: on second thought obviously he didn't "literally" laugh his head off.. that would be bad.

Ronaldo will play in the next match against Japan. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=371643&cc=3888
However Parreira defended Ronaldo after the game, saying his performance had been a big improvement on his effort during Brazil's opening 1-0 group win over Croatia.

'He is slowly getting his rhythm back,' he said of the Real Madrid striker, who has been criticised for being overweight.

'But he needs to play more games to get more rhythm.'

'He is gradually getting fitter but the only way he will continue to get fitter is to play more games.'

Parreira said Ronaldo would start against Japan in the final group game, denying he should be replaced by either Robinho or Fred following their key contributions off the bench against the Socceroos.
