What are you playing now? [2023]

Playing Quantum Break - Loving the story and it looks like a game released 2 years a go let alone 7!!

It's super demanding though, my 4070ti can't hold a locked 60fps at native 4k and even dropping settings down doesn't give me a perfectly locked 60fps.

Always fancied playing that game. Hoping it lands somewhere for free at some point.

Quantum break is on my todo list. Surprised to hear it’s so demanding. Is it doing anything special?

IIRC - when it originally released on XBO, it was rendering at 540p (or something similarly low) and then used temporal reconstruction to make a 1080p framebuffer out of 4x 540p rendered frames. While in still shots with little to no motion it looked quite convincingly like it might be native 1080p, in motion that fell apart with lots of temporal artifacts, blurring and overall lowered resolution.

When it came to PC, either at launch or after, they had a native render mode without the temporal reconstruction. The rendering cost was, obviously, also quite a bit higher than the console render path.

It was a fascinating technical release at the time, IMO. Lessons learned from that led to an improved form of reconstruction that they used for Control.

SB

A few things.

1. Reflections on EVERYTHING that's reflective (Super rare even today due to performance cost)
2. It has a pretty special GI system with a focus on indirect lighting
3. It uses a lot of advanced effects that were still quite rare at the time of its release

There are some scenes where there's quite a lot of artifacts from their lighting system and I would love to see this get a remaster using the latest version of Northlight so the games lighting, reflections and shadows can moved over to being RT based.

Finished Quantum Break.

Last 2 chapters were awesome, time travel based story is also awesome and not giving you everything in the ending and leaving the player to develop their own conclusions is also awesome.

If you love story driven single players games I highly recommend it.

Nice to see Quantum Break getting some love. I played it on Series X couple years ago and absolutely loved it. The final battle kind of sucked, but other than that it's a very strong game and the story was fantastic. I haven't played anything in a while... Should start something...

It's on my list to complete at some point.

For myself, I reached the final boss of Death's Door and tried to kill him about 30 times and probably won't bother going back to get more upgrades to make it easier. Too many other games to play.

Continuing my FPS binge with Wolfenstein II. Really enjoying the pacing so far between action sequences and story breaks. Had to settle for Do or Die difficulty as it’s too easy to be one shotted at anything higher. There’s no indicator of which direction damage is coming from so impossible to escape incoming fire. Coming from looter shooter shadow warrior 2 it’s a refreshingly simple experience. Only a few guns and no rpg elements. Just straight up fun running and gunning.

Some textures were rough before I discovered the Uber image streaming option. Game plays and looks really good now.

Titanfall 2

This game is sooooo fun. The adrenaline rush and euphoria are really unbelievable.

The freedom provided are also unprecedented. Bad with shooting stuff? Then swish around like Spiderman and melee!

Even the titans are so varied, melee, auto lock rockets, anything to cater to you.

Hate playing against people? There's a game mode where you play together with other people fighting against fun and engaging bots!

Too bad they released it very close together with call of duty or Battlefield. Thus too much competition.

If I'm filthy rich, I will absolutely contact EA and let them know that I will bankroll Respawn's development cost for a new titanfall.

Or at the very least a remake of titanfall, combining titanfall 1 and 2.

Amnesia: The Bunker

Played two times for an hour.
Conclusion: All other games are made for kids.

It's dark and hard. I have not yet figured out a way to hide from the monster. I die often, and it's hard to make progress before that.
Older Frictional games were terrifying too, but much easier to dominate. In this one, i'm just a victim, and my mental stamina only lasts for an hour.
But it's tense and interesting, so i won't give up. Even if i can barely see anything.

If you think Resident Evil or Silent Hill are horror games, time to play a real one! ; )

I thought about QB when seeing SW Outlaws. In some indoor environments they really got CGI quality. I remember those orange tinted labs which looked mind blowing real.
And it was a good game too. I didn't understand why it got so much critique.

Testing out the new monitor with some Dying Light 2.

It can still have some of the most realistic lighting in any game and having a proper HDR monitor now makes it look even better.

These shots were HDR ones that have been tone mapped to SDR so you won't get the full effect.1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg
