Warhawk - Single player dropped

So next news about this game will come soon. I hope they still have the plan to release a multiplayer server that users can set up on their PS3.

Now that would be way cool--Linux clients for dedicated PS3 servers

This sux, so release some kind a free multiplayer demo thingy and start over again please. This is a franchise that they should be trying to rescue not fuck up.

The more I think about it. The more awesome I think it could become!

Imagine objective based MP not a simple little DM game. A team objective could be taking out the other team's huge base ships or taking out a major ground target.

Add mutiple ship classes or roles and it would start to get exciting! I'm thinking Tribes but with warhawks!

Bleh I was hoping a Warhawk that would be like what the old one was, but this is dissapointing if true. Is it confirmed?

If it's like Unreal Tournament and has no storyline, it can be just the ladder for deathmatch/onslaught etc. against bots as single-player-like gameplay but not single-player in the traditional sense.

But what's the point considering the single portion of Unreal tournament is... For use of a better word... Bollocks..?

I'd have to agree with the general consensus here and if these rumours are true then i'm incredibly dissappointed by the outcome..

Either give us a full-fledged Warhawk game or give us something else, not a half-arsed online only product which fits into a genre (MP online combat) which has never really floated well on consoles...

I *really* hope this is all one big missunderstanding..

If the sales of it are reasonablly good (its price will be ~$30) they may plan a single-player campaign for another downloadable pack.

But that's the problem!

Chances are if the sales are good then they probably wont.. Considering tha fact that the people who will buy the product would be buying it for the gameplay in whatever form that maybe originally, I doubt the developers would choose to invest time into developing a full blown single-player adventure out of it considering..:

a) The cost of developing such a campaign would be significant unless they decided to do a poor, half-assed job which wouldn't be any good NEway (i.e. a string of objective-based single player missions with a weak narrative to tie it together..)
b) They would run the risk of offering a gameplay alternative which would be ill-recieved by the game owners who would be looking for DLC in the form of extensions to the MP gameplay they bought the orignal title for..
c) They could just as well reduce such risks by offering further MP content (which I fully imagine that they would..) in order to expand the core MP gameplay experience and guarantee sustainable profitability of the IP, satisfying a solution to b) and avoiding the costs associated with a)..

Chances are if they do go this route I highly doubt we'll ever see any form of single player game "tagged" onto it and if they ever did decide to build a single player adventure, it's likely they'd do so as an alternative disc-based product which borrows the engine, assets and control mechanics of it's MP brother but stays truer to what the original Warhawk was about... Hopefully...

Warhawk was opretty much the only PS3 game I've read about that excited me (well Fl0w too. A little.).

It looked grand and epic in scope and by all accounts ran smoothly and fluidly even at an early stage of development (rare with even next gen console games).

It was also hpyed as a a technical tour de force in those little videos released way back when.

Warhawk eemed kind of like a cool hollywood movie to me. If it's been amputated mutilated and butchered down into multiplayer only it's just another nail in the coffin with regards to PS3 for me personally. I have little to no interest in multiplayer games that lack a story mode. UT and CS for example have always had almost zero appeal to me. Rhis is particulary true for multiplayer only console games.

Frankly I'm surprised the dev was allowed to botch a high profile title such as this was. Very disappointing. Heads ought to roll by all that's holy.

Disclaimer: all this assumes these rumors are true of course.

Peace.

But the report of Warhawk being on disc is kinda funny. :p

EDIT: Didn't read the link. Apparently Sony has denied the rumor.

Considering Sony did not come out and uncategorically state "no this is bogus! there will definitely be a single player campaign" or somesuch I'd say it seems to be up in the air. Or the reason to cut singleplayer has already been made and they're just trying to hide it for now.

All in all it doesn't look good regardless of what's in the Kotaku link..

Peace.

Single player or not, warhawk seems to be hitting the shelves after all ... which makes you wonder if the other half of the rumor is still true.

Sony said:
At this time that's simply not true. We have not made any decision with regards to distribution for Warhawk, which is due out this fall.

They've made 'no decision' about distrubution of the game?? If there was no truth to this rumour, wouldn't the decision to use conventional distrubution already be made?

Seems like Sony's saying, we haven't actually made up our minds yet.

Can be read a number of ways. Definitive answers have a tendency to come back and bite you in the butt. Thus it could be the spokesperson knows the game is due for disc, but appreciates the possibility that somewhere between now and then, the idea is to put the game out as a download. Thus he says 'no plans' rather than say 'we have plans' and then those plans change and turn him into an Evil Sony Liar.

Perhaps what we would be most useful to see the credibility of the game being a download title is for those who have the game on disc to say how large the file(s) is. A 5 GB disc title is unlikely to be a download!

It's PR, I wouldnt read too much into it. I think they definitely have their minds made up, but they wont officially announce it until the time is right. My bet is on GDC during Phil's keynote. So everything is 'no confirm or deny' until then.
