Halo 3 Single Player Impressions Thread (AKA: NO GRAPHICS TALK)

The HUD looks to be formatted for 5:4 there, but the gravlift and such look too skinny so I'm guessing the 3D view at 1280x1024 is using the same FOV as 4:3. Have you tried a 4:3 resolution to compare?

As for rendering resolution, I'd have to bust out my VGA cable to make a proper guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if they keep the rendering resolution constant and just adjust the FOV. On a side note, back during the Beta I noticed that 1366x768 over VGA gives smaller HUD and menu elements than 720p/1080p, but the 3D view looked the same. I haven't checked the full game, but at least back then Bungie was obviously doing some weird things in regard to their support for various resolutions.

No.

It was made 16:9 native, but they just added to the vertical for 4:3 rather than reducing the horizontal fov for people on SD tvs.

What would be the inherent difference though, if Im playing widescreen and it is essentially a cropped 4:3 image given that 4:3 shows more viewable content on screen. Seems to be an issue of putting the cart before the horse if the game is intended to be widescreen yet shows more viewable area in 4:3. Though I realize this is kind of a run around scenario. (Im aware of PR statements about this as well)

I cant believe that Bungie didnt simply put in black bars to keep the fov ratio the same for 5:4 users, looks like from the pic they are using the 4:3 render and then scaling. Most every game I remember seeing a friend play on a similar monitor was "barred" for fov and image quality purposes. It may be a scenario overlooked for the "just get it out the door" mentality.

I finished the game last night.
Loved the ending, it was the only part of the game that moved me. And by ending, I mean the scene after the credits roll.
The gameplay was good, I didn't find my self being bored at any level although I was kind of expecting more.

One thing that bugged me since Halo 2 was the fact that you couldn't play the game with the weapons you wanted. I usually hate the Covennant weapons... And I really like the duall smgs. But you couldn't find ammo for them...
Overall, I liked it, some of the vehicles were great, and some of the fights were very intense.

I wouldn't mind if I get extra pixels, but now it is apparent that I am not getting what I deserve - I played this on 640x480, and they look exactly the same! They better release a patch soon on this issue!

Don't hold your breath.

I was hunting for skulls this weekend on Normal, and I noticed that the AI dialog (both friend and foe) was pretty funny. For example, I jumped in a warthog and one of the marines said "Hey! Let me be the gunner! I'm in a real bad mood!"

For some reason, I didn't notice the dialog that much when I played through the game on Legendary. Perhaps they didn't live long enough to say anything? Anyway, it makes replaying sections of the game fun.

Yeah, the dialog can be realy funny at times. In all the games the marines now and then shot the corpses of the fallen enemies and say stuff like "Take that you alien scum!". Anyway, after a fight a marine were shooting a dead brute and said "Hey, look at me! Im shooting at corpses!". Hillarious =)

Or when I got the tank for the first time and just killed two hunters a marine yelled out "Tank beats hunter!". Later I shot some brute shoppers or whatever and he said "Tank beats everything!"

If you can get the "hidden" skull the dialogue gets even funnier.

huh? you couldn't tell the difference between 640x480 and 1152x640 but will be able to distinguish between 1152x640 to 1280x720?

Anybody here get a scratched LE disc? I didn't, but it's scratched now. :( I took the system to my dad's so my kids could play on his 62" DLP. I wasn't watching what I was doing and I knocked over my vertical standing system while Halo 3 was playing. Looked at the disc later and there is a huge scratch that circles the whole disc. Naturally I can't play some of the campaign missions now. I've filled out Microsoft's disc replacement form and I'm about to send it in. Just wondered if anybody had any experience on the turn around time.

Regardless of that the game was excellent, but on retrospect it was way too quick. LOL I happened to be really sick the week it came out and I took my time with it. Would have finished it in a day or two, but end up taking 5. Love the Theater mode. I use it all the time. Just put up my first share Saturday(Gamertag: AzBat360). It was one my deathmatch games I played at my dad's. Kids went totally nuts over it. Then they started playing with Forge. ;) Yesterday I played all day on deathmatch and campaign co-op with a buddy of mine. What a blast. I'm not real good, but I'm slowly getting EXP. ;) Now I'm working on the skulls and terminals for achievements. Man, are some of these hard. Eventually I'll get them all, but it might take a week or so. This one will be in my library forever. Much better than Gears, which I already traded in. Don't get me wrong, I'll probably buy Gears 2 the day it comes out, but only for the single player. But till then hopefully I'm getting Bioshock for Xmas. ;)

You can always just get the disk buffed at someplace that deals with used disks, that would be much quicker and cheaper than sending it in.

Damn chieftans with thier blasted gravity hammers. Is it like impossible to evade thier blows? And that invincibility equipment is just silly.

True. I might consider it, but it's pretty bad and I'm not sure it will fix it. And if it doesn't will Microsoft still replace it? Oh well.

Yeah the gouge you get when you kick the console over is really nasty, but freind of mine did the same thing to his FN3 disk and the local game shop fixed it up like new. You just have to fine a place with one of the big industrial style buffing machines as those can fix just about anything. As for MS taking back a disk that has been buffed, I can't see why not, pretty sure they'll even take one that's been snapped in half.

No, I was saying that I would have been happy if 1280x1024 was the native resolution, but the thing is they couldn't be bothered to letterbox the game that they forced me to play a game in SD
