DS is interesting in that it's going to hit a saturation point. DS+lite sales are currently at 13.8m. You see the sat point for Japan with PS2, about 20m. At the absurd rate DS's are selling (.5m this week alone, at least 100k even on slow weeks) it's going to chew through that next 5-6m very quickly. I dont know what happens then. Maybe all the original DS buyers pick up lites too. But even if half do, that only staves off the sat point by another 3m. Another possibility is the sat point itself grows much larger due to DS's supposedly broader appeal. Still, in a way DS is running out of room..
I was curious about that recently too. What happens when it hits a saturation point? I wonder if it can sell 25-30m? With the speed it's selling, it's either going to hit a brick wall real fast or it's saturation point is going to be something completely unheard of. Pretty crazy, either way!
Also saturation point for handhelds is higher than for consoles, since every person in a family can have one. We used to have 5 DS at home, for example (down to 4 now since I gave one to my brother).
Another thing that can help raise the saturation point for handhelds is colors. They are basically cheap enough that you can get the latest cool color even if you already have one. I'm sure Nintendo will be doing that with the Wii also... give it some midlife boost with different colors.
