Tom Clancy's The Division [PS4, XO]

So far, holding on my decision not to purchase.

From some things I've seen it looks structured almost exactly like Destiny/other MMO's (daily missions, separate endgame currency, etc) but the difference for me is the meat of the gameplay in the beta was just boring. I'd probably love it if Destiny didn't exist...

I have had a feeling all along this could have the potential to die off really quickly in terms of userbase, so we'll see. I imagine it pulled a TON of players out of Destiny initially too (especially with the late lack of content there), but we'll see if it lasts.

im a very PvE destiny player that care about everything....
- the story (seriously, destiny story is.. have... strong tease and premise.. utterly drop dead flat on everything else)
- the world
- the nuance
- the set pieces
- the gameplay
- etc

except loot and busywork (quests)

now the division is in courrier's hand. hopefully its good enough despite the beta is boring.

Got the game

Impression

  • Horrible way of introduction. The division welcome you the game by... SIDE MISSION that's super generic, boring, full of stupid enemies in wave, without strong motivation (I know in the game it's my character's job and I must follow orders, but make the player care... This is just.. Ugh... Destiny with its intro mission is much better in motivating the player)

  • Lots of stupid enemies.

  • Named enemies sometimes stupid sometimes smart.

  • All stuff is "because I ordered, you must follow"

  • Stupid story inside gameplay design. Seriously, you are facing a hostage situation and you just go there guns blazing.

  • Freedom of AI manipulation and objects exploits. I can lure enemy BACK to another room, complete with explosives. I can shoots enemy trying to throw nades. I can shoot enemy's nades bag. I can use the classic red gas tank to blow enemy up.

  • Stupid stupid stupid collision. Too often I got pushed b a npc. Heck, even the 1st objective can't be done because the laptop is full of players trying to do the objective. Need to login logout tons of times.

  • Horrible scripted events and animations. Building exploding, npc panicking, npc thanking me.. Enemy waves... Everything is horribly canned.

Social games :). I don't blame him. I was happily enjoying SFV, though playing it late at night made sleeping hard, games like destiny and TD made it easy to sleep. Not sure if that's a good thing, but I suppose I can call it relaxing.

There are several things that TD does better than destiny if we compare launches.

A) story, it is at least there. There is a story. It makes sense.
B) matchmaking, if you don't have buddies, well it's going to be hard to do some more challenging content without help, they got you covered pretty well.
C) they don't fake the concept of builds. There are no character builds, just inventory builds. Provided everyone hits max level in all areas, everyone will have the same skills and talents and perks. But it's unlikely that will be the case for some time. So there are some differences.
D) the dark zone is an interesting dynamic that destiny doesn't have
e) the levels and missions actually contain much more exploration built into them, there are parts where you can lock pick areas and walk in and do stuff. Without the lock pick you may have to come back later. There are contaminated areas that without the right gear you would die quickly. Overall I felt that they did a much better job here giving you a more an alive feeling that destiny did st least from a universe perspective. I mean at least I see civilians on the street. There are things I can interact with. Destiny all I see are guardians, and generally speaking very minimal interaction with the environment.
f) the load screens are extremely minimal. Even when we reset a mission to a different difficulty it's only seconds to get that going. In most cases I am in control of my player.

This is a game changer for me. One of the major reasons i dropped Destiny was the loading screens. TD on the other hand seems to have almost none, which is very impressive.

Yup, the whole relaxing aspect is there for real. Thats why I missed the beta once it was gone. I could simply talk to friends while kicking AI's ass off casually.

OTOH, when I oc op in BLoodborne , its so quiet you can hear our breathing in the room :p !

Well, did security wing mission. Now I need 400 security wing bucks to find out what dark zone ops means. Hopefully, something different that's engaging.

I guess my biggest worry is that the combat won't be fun. In the beta, everything worked well, but the enemies didn't seem very interesting, and even doing the missions on hard it just seemed to mostly be hiding in a spot, peeking and shooting, then moving to a new spot when they throw a grenade or charge. Never really felt exciting. Wondering if the full release has more interesting scenarios, that liven it up a bit.

Combat design is not as good as destiny. But this might be due to FPS vs TPS design. I run around with a double barrelled shotgun, and I get good feels when guys with bats run at me. The game is certainly harder on hard mode, the game comes across as more bullet sponges, but it's till good. Audio could be increased on guns to give a greater UMPHH feel like Destiny has but I wouldn't say combat is terrible.

In fact I'd say to much degree it's actually quite a bit harder. You have to burst your rifles, and you have to aim. Many guns have very unstable recoil and that makes for an interesting mini game in itself.

The freedom to exploit the map and various objects is awesome in this game.

Hopefully ubisoft did not patch any of those. It's my fun to engage however I want. And the map design itself seems encourage this kind of play.

It's frigging annoying in Destiny when bungie keeps patching out any fun I have simply because 'that is not in line with our vision'.

Your vision my ass bungie. This is a game I bought. And now here ubisoft brings the division that encourage that kind of play.

Edit:
Tips for better battle experience : don't kill the enemies too fast, as soon as they spawn from their cave. Let them roam a bit.

Fairly valid points from everyone. There is a very valid point on map design that the levels are meant to be explored and exploited. The security wing had this one area where if you went up to the roof you could take advantage of it.

Yeah it seems their design philosophy is a total opposite of bungie.

Bungie : you must use the map as we intended. And you must be HERE and the boss must be THERE. Devy from that and we will punish you the player (inconsistent invisible walls, death walls, bouncy walls, turn back timer, teleporting to friends, closing doors, blocking hallways) and you too the boss (boss teleporting back to arena after thrown out of map, boss respawn with full heath if you killed it too fast outside of intended boss area).

Massive : here's a map, you can be here or here or here or here... Or wherever you want.

OH, and I mean This is not only for you the human player, but also for the NPC.

Lol I'm thankful I didn't get too into Destiny. a after I downed Antheon a couple times doing the game as intended I stopped playing.

What I like about Massives approach here is that by adding varying ways to approach the map, you've effectively allows players to outfit their load out and approach the level how they want to or at least how they see fit.

You get them to think about their load outs and how they like to play and the map gives them a chance to really make that happen.

I just bought the game (Division, not Destiny, just to be clear) and played it for about five minutes. Long enough to get killed by the second wave of guys that spawn in the very first mission and I'm liking it.

The atmosphere is neat, the graphics are good, the story is there... who knows what else, but I got killed and had to stop to make dinner and whatnot and just thought 'this game would probably be really fun co-op', which I imagine is exactly what they were going for. Having another or even a squad in all the different cover spots, using different special abilities, etc.. I imagine it can get really interesting.

Or, maybe it is repetitive and sucks and I just haven't found out yet because I only played for 5 minutes.
