The U.S. price of 80GB PS3 = $499 today, 40GB model on Nov. 2 = $399

Not only that, but Amazon is a terrible indicator for the overall market. We saw these 500% spikes on Amazon back during the first $100 price cut, and it translated to just 20K sales per week for a month and a half.

I think we'll see 40K per week after this price cut again, and the usual increase in Nov/Dec, but that's it.

Remember this....

Patsu I think you should email your post to Sony

edit: Do you know if there is any place I can download that PS3 add?

Hah ! It's only a rough guide and might just offend Sony staff. And no, I don't know where to download the video.

Agreed. It was nice and all, but for the uninitiated that video will just seem long, unfocused, and confusing. Unless you already knew about the features it's depicting, I hardly think it would make any sense at all.

It could be something the ad agency proposed and Sony authorized. Ad agency are very good at visuals and pitching interesting story. Some of those I dealt with seem more interested in winning annual advertising awards than making effective advertisements.

I really like the "Wii would like to play" campaign, the iPhone ad, and the new Apple "informmercial/guide" here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/guidedtour/. Sony should think about pitching its own for PS3.

Generally I would trust interactive marketing more, something like the Walmart one keyn posted. Microsoft did quite a bit of these in its first 2 years.

Nice PR point, but spikes don't count for a great deal though. Would you rather sell 500,000 a month one month and 100,000 the rest, or 250,000 every month? These spikes show pent-up demand, in large part probably people waiting for a price drop, but aren't reliable indicators for overall interest. Kinda like how PS3 sold n million in the first month of release, and then failed to maintain any major momentum. Interest in price drops should be reserved until a month or two down the line, to see what the real impact is.

Based on what is shown so far, Sony will need to run a series of marketing programs to sustain the momentum. Nevertheless, the new $399 price point is a significant element (to be complemented by other components).

Finally the price has come to $399.00...I told myself I would buy one, if this happened. I really don't care for the Spiderman movie though? Never really got it to those movies. Makes you think where the advertisement is in that, even though I am probably the minority, I will buy the PS3 to play games....I never really watch movies that much in general.

But to me all I here is constant "DOOM AND GLUM" around the PS3, and the unfortunate part is that most of it is true making it's future look even more bleak, at least in my eye's and enough so that I will probably still hold off buying one.

SONY needs to get HOME finished, and kick those SOCOM games into high gear. The SOCOM fanbase was huge in it's day, although it's a major cheat/glitch fest today, and they seriously need to clean all that up online, it's probably why the PS3 hasn't sold well, who wants to play an online game that's someone's flying around killing everybody, it really is that pathetic.

You are aware though that with Resistance and Warhawk (Motorstorm not bad either), Sony has some really good online games though, right? I mean, ok, if you're really good you can still fly around killing everybody in Warhawk, but ... ;)

You really should base your opinion of the PS3 on the real machine. I'm willing to bet that if you buy one as you planned to do at $399, you'll quickly see a lot of doom and gloom dissipate, as you connect that amazing piece of technology and discover everything you can do with it already. Compared to where the PS2 was after one year, and considering that PS3 still has to hit that anniversary, the PS3 is doing incredibly well. Really, the amount of stuff that's already available, some really good games, some great downloadable games and demos, awesome and mature multi-media features and internet browser, compatibility with loads of existing devices, the list is huge ... I think the Sony haters are doing a great job of making Sony and the Playstation 3 look bad, but don't believe the anti-hype! ;)

Just being online doesn't make the game socom.

The ps3 is not doing incredibly well in comparison to the PS2, it is not even doing incredibly well in comparison to the gamecube or xbox.

What does the doom and the gloom actually do to you? If it has any real negative effect on you, I would avoid the PS3. It's pretty heavy with the doom and gloom. If you want to be on the right side of hype, you should really be looking into the Wii.

I am luckily immune to doom and gloom, bad mojo, and media backlash. I like my PS3 alot.

And if that was the original question, then your comment would have been at least relevant.

He said they need to get the socom games out. How the hell does warhawk even compare to a squad based shooter?

I wasn't talking about sales, I was talking about what you get for 399 at this point in time, if you're willing to not have your cloudment judged by people like, well, you apparently.

The PS2, never cost as much as $399. Even then I'd argue the PS2 had more demand as a dvd player than all of the non-games features of the ps3 combined.

PS2 was $299, and had MGS2 and GTA3, as exclusives, within a year.

PS2 launched in Japan on Mar.4, 2000 in Japan for 39800 Yen (the same price as the 40GB PS3), MGS2 was released in Japan on Nov. 29, 2001 (Nov. 14, 2001 in the US). GTA3 was new to a console platform back then.

True but still there is enough content to keep a gamer satisfied. I know I am. I didnt get MGS4 or GTA, but I get other great games and other features,

Doesn't change the fact that it was the end of the first year of the PS2 in the US, and the above mentioned games have contributed a lot to it selling almost 3 million units in november and december. It was a much more desirable product then the PS3 is at this time.

Noone can argue that there are enough games for the PS3 to keep the users happy. The point is that they're probably not enough to make people buy a PS3 instead of the cheaper X360 that has more and better games.

I dont see much difference between the majority of PS3 games vs 360 games other than a few 360 exclusives.

I am pretty sure that a gamer can be around as happy with either PS3 or a 360. The biggest drawback Sony has at the moment is the lack of famous games such as the ones you mentioned.

Because the console has a smaller install base than his competitors, newly appearing franchises are left unseen by the everyday gamer.

I respect that opinion, but the market apparently disagrees.

Well of course. Since 360 had a better start, accumulated user base and got its fair share of popular games. Its natural PS3's offerings will be overshadowed. Even if people are buying the same games that are also released on the PS3.

I was referring to the "although it's a major cheat/glitch fest today, and they seriously need to clean all that up online, it's probably why the PS3 hasn't sold well, who wants to play an online game that's someone's flying around killing everybody, it really is that pathetic." part of things. Resistance and Warhawk have pretty clean online services, and for Warhawk, they recently even announced Arbiters.

Maybe. It's difficult to argue this, with sometimes people arguing that BluRay will never sell PS3s because nobody bought the PS2 as a DVD player, and then other people arguing the complete opposite. The only thing I am sure of is that the PS3 right now is one of the best BluRay players, and that getting a Playstation 3 early got me into BluRay just before I *really* needed it, just like last time with the Playstation 2 and DVD. But in the meantime, the PS3 has the harddrive, plays mp3s, has very cool slideshows, does DNLA, has a webbrowser, allows you to attach all sorts of memory cards and USB drives, is BlueTooth compatible so I can reuse my phone's headset, has a 1Gbit network card built in, friends list and in-game messaging, and so on and so forth. It's a *lot* more than the PS2 ever had in its first year.

While I do agree with Laa Yosh that maybe the PS3 hasn't had games like MGS2 and GTA3 yet, I do wonder how many copies those game have sold in the PS2's first year. Does anyone know?

I dont see much difference between the majority of PS3 games vs 360 games other than a few 360 exclusives.

Three additional differences of note:

1. Delays. A lot of PS3 titles have seen delays compared to the market. e.g. it looks like The Orange Box is getting a lot of good press and sold decently on the 360, but the PS3 will need to wait until December for it. Take a title like Stranglehold, which still isn't out on the PS3. And while MS and Sony have both seen delays to big titles (like UT3 and Lair), it hurts Sony more because they have fewer titles on the market which leads to...

2. The 360 has a large back catalogue, as well as a larger budget library.

And it doesn't help when the two biggest selling games this generation, Gears of War and Halo 3, aren't on the PS3. Likewise the 60Hz versus 30Hz for Madden was a big deal for that demographic, and it shows in the sales.

3. Mindshare impact. Seeing titles like GTAIV, DMC, Ace Combat, and so forth go to the 360 has an impact. If you were a gamer who really dug DMC and GTA, but was interested in what the Halo fuss was about and thought games like Gears, Bioshock, NG2, and Mass Effect would be worth a purchase you may hop ship.

Especially when there is such price disparity.

The question is how will Sony overcome this issue and sway momentum the other way.
