Honda is showcasing their new CR-Z Sport model to the world, and you can get a test drive right now. That is if you have one of the Gran Turismo 5 Honda Kiosk's set up in your town. All along New York, Honda is setting up Kiosks with Sony/PD Gran Turismo 5 to allow people to "test drive" the new car

They are also being the first company to have 3D advertising in New York Times Square. They are having street teams run all along the streets handing out 3D glasses to let people view the new advertisments. Maxim will also be making a new 3D issue, that provides the glasses and 3D Honda ads.

[Read last few posts to get in the groove]

So there ! you can look at the car wrecks in 3D too. :devilish:

A long standing tradition by now (other cars in the past have been the Prius, the BMW 1 series, etc., but also a special training version of Lupo Cup cars that was actually used in real racing training and many other things), and one that helps fund the Gran Turismo series I presume. ;) I'm actually getting the impression that the game probably already earned back its budget from GT5 Prologue and these 'side-quests' although it is of course always a question how much extra time the team have spent on these (though obviously there is a lot of overlap)

Yeah. I don't think the "extras" people point to when loudly proclaiming "they're wasting time!1?1!" have actually added much to the total development time. I suspect the core game wasn't to Kaz's standard, plain and simple. And you can only dedicate so many resources to that. Rather then have the rest of the team sit idle, he had them work on what I would guess to be a "wish list" of sorts, of things he/they/SCE/fans wanted to see included, along with working on the other collaborative projects they've done (like the data logger). I also doubt people appreciate just how useful those industry collaborations can be for Polyphony later on down the line when it comes to their relationship with the manufactures.

If that is how it is in the game, and it appears so, it is way beyond what I expected.

From GTPlanet:

Here’s a quick overview of what’s been discussed in the TGS 2010 GT5 breakout session:

Laguna Seca has been completely rebuilt and will return for GT5. Trial Mountain has also been confirmed.
“Gran Turismo Anywhere” will allow you to manage B-Spec races, right from your computer. You’ll be able to hold B-Spec races with your friends from anywhere in what are called “Remote Races”.
GT5 will feature a series of special events such as the Karting Experience, the AMG driving school, The Stig Challenge, Jeff Gordon NASCAR School, Sebastien Loeb Rally Challenge, and Gran Turismo Rally.
Point-to-point rally stages will be automatically and randomly generated – you’ll have to depend on your co-driver to give you the best instructions about the road ahead.
Rally mode can be played either on or offline.
Weather changes include temperature differences, air pressure changes, and humidity, affecting the surface conditions of the track dynamically.
Weather conditions are randomized. Forecasts for your race will be available but may not be entirely accurate, just like the real world.
Polyphony Digital has helped Red Bull Racing’s Adrian Newey design the X1 Concept – an “ultimate” racing car, free of any technical regulations.
Polyphony Digital has worked to improve engine sounds.
Yamauchi admits that, in certain situations – such as standing race starts in the rain with 15 other cars on the screen kicking up spray in front of you – the game may not be able to hold 60FPS. Otherwise, it will strive to hold 60FPS as often as possible.
The Volkswagen Kubelwagen, which has a drive system like the first beetle, and the amphibious Volkswagen Schwimmwagen will be in the game.
Many things didn’t make the cut in Gran Turismo 5, and work on Gran Turismo 6 has already begun.

Bad quality but it still looks stunning.

I think it looks stunning partly because it is bad quality. ;) The rain effects look believable though insofar as that the early PS3 Formula 1 game also had some nice believable rain effects, although those weren't projected onto the windscreen like they are here. Then again that was 3 years ago.

What makes me completely fool is the promise of 60 frames. We are speaking of a resolution of 1280x1080, that really raises the mark for previous driving games. The engine that deals with the sheer amount of transparencies and particles that the clima should require is, let me say this, beyond belief. It´s almost silly even ask for something similar to this, even if there are loads of reductions in poly budget when displaying rain, etc. I know that the time available for a frame in a 60 FPS game is really tiny, and you´re telling me that the engine is able to display 16 cars, damaging model, high resolution, custom AA, and THESE transparencies & particles?

Where´s the trick? Ultra low-res festival in effects? Magic in reduction of unnecesary shader budget? Real mastering of Cell graphical capabilities? What kind of weird thing is that?

I have really complex questions about image quality. I have to figure out the deals reached in order to mantain framerate and resolution in those scenarios.

I know for sure that Polyphony are masters of optimisation but, let be serious... that´s becoming absurd. We know what a really good 60 frames game can offer, even in 1080p mode (Ridge Racer 7, Forza 3, Prologue) in this generation. And what Polyphony wants to deliver is something like overengineering. Holy god, what kind of damage is inflicted to programmers in order to mantain such a high image quality with transparencies in spades and the resolution and framerate of the game?

Yamauchi seems to me something between Dr. Mengele and Frankenstein... What a man.

Hm, I really wonder about the constant 60 fps!
I wait until PS360 shows us if this is indeed true...especially when there are other cars on track....

It wasn´t in the past. Another question is IQ, tearing and AA specially.

Nevertheless, Yamauchi speaks that the game shoud be close to 60 frames even in the more adverse conditions. What makes me feel confortable is the fact that if the game engine has been tuned to sustain 60 frames when things go really wrong, in "normal" conditions (sunny days and so on) the framerate has to have more "room" and because of that it will be more enjoyable.

The problem with cars is the old handicap of RSX with vertex shaders, I suppose. The good aspect of the smoke and debris that the cars generated when off-road in previous footage makes obvious that a big effort has been made with the engine in orden to deal with transparencies. Now we have a good reason to do that fine tuning.

But the 60 frames is not the only issue. The real deal is the mix of all the features, the increased resolution, the good quality of the in-game models, the lighting model (that has some kind of dynamic stuff), the brillant textures, the damage modeling, and of course the promise of some kind of 60 frames show -and now the dynamic weather.

OK, Yamauchi could be fooling us and acting as a master of the marketing, but if that´s is even genuine... then man, four years after release, with an hardware that makes cats cry, a console has suprised me again.

But let´s wait a bit more. For now I´m shocked. I NEVER believe the dynamic weather feature. Never ever. But that´s it.

Yes, the last sentence is the most "frightening"

I think the actual quote is:

"There are actually lots of things that we couldn't get into Gran Turismo 5. So in that sense, we have begun work on Gran Turismo 6."

Bolded part by me. It's a subtle difference, but I think that context helps put the situation in better perspective.

Did Kazunori really promise near 60fps for extreme conditions ? I thought he simply said "except extreme conditions" without estimating the framerate ? There's also headtracking and 3D. I don't know what to expect at the moment but like you, I think we are already in the realm of twilight zone.

Gradthrawn, it's frightening because the amount of things they cramp in is becoming absurd. Even if the humans are willing, can the little black box and Blu-Ray take it ?

Right, that's the impression I got from your post. I should have quoted Arwin, instead. I just wanted to clarify that statement so that some don't assume they're actually, actively, working on GT6.
