The E3 Thread! Who will come out on top?

But the whole self promotion thing on your own system depends on actually having the system already no? I'm was actually thinking more about how E3 might impact those who haven't bought into any system yet.

Quite right... that is why I mention word of mouth. I own both the PS3 and the 360. When friend's come over, they want to see what either system is about. With coverage of E3 available on either system, I can show them what the systems are now... and what they can be in the future. This happens and will happen quite often. I'm sure you know someone with a wii... someone with a 360... and someone with a ps3. If you were serious about any of those (assuming you had none), you would ask the owners wouldn't you?

All I'm saying is this E3 could have more impact than many are willing to give it credit for, mainly due to coverage being available on the 360 and possibly the PS3. With today's quick traveling of news, it would be no time before these vids are up on youtube for those without a ps3/360. It's not all doom and gloom because of the private nature of E3 this year.

Possibly, but I still see E3 as being for the hardcore crowd mainly.I'm not saying that E3 doesn't impact on casuals, word of mouth..trickle down.. whatever you want to call it,it happens. Still I would like to see Sony do more of what Nintendo is doing by going straight to very mainstream news sources like CNN for example. Not traditional gamer press like IGN,but real mainstream news.

More than that, it's only a select minority that use online services, who are even more likely to be hardcore users. The chances of a casual gamer paying out hundreds for an HD console and use online functions are pretty minimal IMO. Thus E3's coverage on these machines is no different to ordinary internet coverage, only the sources will be extra biased. The same people who see the coverage on Live! and PSN will also be reading websites and forums. I don't see these services as adding any extra sway-power to the companies.

I agree with E3 being directed mainly at the hardcore, but word-of-mount and reaching the casual audience typically trickles down through the hardcore to the casual gamer touch points, like friends, mainstream media, and storefronts. Speaking of which, these companies should spend a lot more time focusing on education of store representatives. There is SO much misinformation floating around that just drives me nuts!

I agree.

My out-of-nowhere wild prediction

Microsoft: Xbox Live gets new services such as SNS, the new Final Fantasy MMORPG

Sony: A new demo of Playstation Eye, no PSP Slim announcement

Nintendo: Wii Health Pack, a Wii Star Wars game

It is not just the online or tv coverage it is the magazine coverage. I remember those thick ass EGM monthlys with all the E3 coverage. Even last year the Wii hype really started at E3 and grew from there. I think casuals have more of an idea what is up with E3 than we give them credit for.

Wow, pretty wild indeed ... :S :D

I think Microsoft will have some much bigger stuff to announce, if at least they take E3 seriously enough vs their X07 event. ;)

Isn't the Playstation Eye just about finished, with Eye of Judgment having been released in Japan? So I expect much bigger stuff regarding the Playstation Eye. Probably we'll see SingStar in action, which should be pretty much finished now also, with the Playstation Eye support included. In fact, soon after E3 is over I think SingStar will be released in Europe.

I also think that Nintendo will have more tricks up its sleeve than we give them credit for. I expect some cool 3rd party stuff at the very least. Also some more online stuff, for sure.

Sony has most potential for great E3 show. They have lots of PS3 1st/3rd party games [plus those that are not revealed yet, like Killzone 2], Home/PSN/Online stuff, Eyetoy, and on top of that PS2 & PSP.

And Korean-only PSN video download service will soon be global:
The larger hard drive will give players more of an opportunity to take advantage of all the downloadable games and trailers on the PLAYSTATION Network, including the content from our forthcoming download service which will include videos, movies and other entertainment content.

I'm really curious about the rumored sixaxis with rumble announcement now.

I already have 3 sixaxis' now but I would gladly buy another if it had that touchsense technology in it. I read the white papers on it and it sounds actually interesting.

On the 80GB pack at $600. I'm crazy about the idea of them keeping a $600 SKU. I think they need to move away from the public perception that the PS3 is $600 as fast as possible and this SKU is not going to help. But at least according to the box it is a "Limited Edition" deal. If it came with a slightly different shell or something actually "limited" about it besides the fact it comes with Motorstorm, it might actually be a valid product.

The majority of 360 owners are on live, 60% I believe.

But I agree, it's not getting alot more exposure by being on the PS3 and 360.

I feel that this at this E3 we will see the benefit of Sony's first/second party investment for this generation. IMO this is going to be a great year for them and they are more likely to have surprises at the show than Microsoft. Certainly more unique stuff.

Microsoft will have a steady E3 with fewer surprises but a decent and compelling line up.

Nintendo won't show a lot but Miyamoto will be on hand to make everyone go "Awww :D" as per usual. Lack of substance for them though.

Killzone 2 vs. Halo 3 is going to be fun

GT5 vs PGR4 will be interesting

I expect this E3 to be pretty exciting.

I'm not sure who will 'win' E3.

All the guys will have great games / exclusives / surprises, but for Nintendo that's probably all the 'news' they'll have.

I'm curious if MS will come up with a new controller or EyeToy+ clone to broaden their market. I also expect some big IPTV / Video / Live announcements.

I expect Sony to re-launch rumble and expand on the store and PSN features too.

Microsoft already has it's Vision camera, it was launched last year even with an eyetoy like game (although it sucked). The big question now is whether we will finally see some cool software for it, and whether the two companies are going to go head to head in this arena as well.

I have at any rate heard several games now refer to Vision as well as EyeToy support (Burnout and Tiger Woods), even if it was only for something as simple as taking screenshots from players when they were being rammed, or mapping faces from pictures (although apparently EA does this quite advanced now in Tiger Woods).

I got the impression last year that both companies were aiming much higher than last gen's EyeToy effort, and I'm very interested in finding out how far they've come along since then.

If you make a 120 fps capable camera, you are obviously planning to use it for more than typical tasks such as video recording, screenshots etc.

That's really what I want to see most this year. Eye of Judgment is nice and all but I doubt it would be a different if the camera was 15 fps only.

Fast positional object recognition (even if green/blue stuff only) FTW, limitless possibilities.
Even some level of mo-cap. If I were Sony, would definitely be pushing that above everything else.

I predict Sony will steal the show, they should have some nice surprises up their sleaves. MS will do an admirable job of presenting a nice lineup of games, and Nintendo is the x-factor.
