The E3 Thread! Who will come out on top?

Nintendo won't screw up.
Microsoft will.

MS has alot of games coming this year and others for next year(not to mention them talking about Vista/DX10/Live anywhere/etc.), so I can definately see them hyping those games/features as much as possible.

Nintendo on the other hand doesnt really have anything to show that will steal the spotlight from the other two, so while they would still put on a decent show, it wont be the talk of the town (imo anyway)

On price drop predictions..not to get anyone's hopes up prematurely, but there are rumours that the next circuit city ad (i.e. the first after E3) shows a new PS3 price of $499, along with the 5 free blu-ray movies offer.

Take with a huge grain of salt, but I figured it was worth mentioning. If true, it'd make E3 that bit more interesting..if there was a drop, i'd expect counter-drops and so forth. Of course, even if true it's always possible it'd be a limited-time CC-only deal. I would be surprised if this were happening, in fact I'd still bet against it until I see something more solid :p

Winners: All three companies and gamers

Losers: My kid's college fund

I think the games sometimes get overshadowed by the horse race/FB crap.

MS probably avoided a lot of questions about reliability issues by announcing the 3-year warranty BEFORE E3.

Actually, Peter Moore addressed that on his GameSpot interview (dont have time to link it, at work atm :p )

Edit:

GameSpot: So, Peter, I hear you have some pretty major news for us....

Peter Moore: All right, let me take you through what we're announcing. So, I don't have to tell you guys how strong the [360] business is, and I think you're going to see proof of that next week at E3. But before we go into E3, we want to make sure that we take care of something that has certainly been on radar screens around the world, and you guys have covered it, and that's the area of quality. We've had a number of Xbox 360 console repairs that have been unacceptable to us over the past few months. So, we've investigated the issue here in Redmond, and we've identified several factors, not just one, but several factors that can cause the general hardware failures indicated by the all-too-familiar three flashing red lights on the Xbox 360 console.

That's what I thought..

And then the Wii blew up with a massive showing last yr, stole the show and turned a mass mindshare of dislike from developers, publishers and the press into the start of there global campaign for world domination..

Yeah i know, althoughI feel it is a bit more of one of those rare occassions that the "hardcore/geeks" and the mainstream were on the same wavelength. For me it was more about a strong indication of things to come, rather than winning the E3 led to them winning the casuals...

Should we create master Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft E3 threads or individual ones for each news item or game? I'm up for anything that will minimize dupes and the "system A sucks compared to system B" comments.

Ha ha ha, that was meant to be a joke right?

I'm hoping Square announces a US release for KH2: Final Mix+.

But that won't happen. Square refuses to realize there is a market for those kind of games, otherwise various other special editions wouldn't sell at all.

In previous years, there's tended to be seperate threads for each of the conferences, which tend to grow into threads accomodating all the news relating to that platform. (e.g. a "sony @e3" thread, a "ms@e3"). Usually these are created just before each press conference. But, that said, game-specific stuff tends to get posted in individual threads in the games forum also, whereas more 'pure news' gets posted in the conference threads.

So do you think this is a make or break year for Sony,I've heard that floated around the intertubes but I think it's being a little over dramatic. For the PS3 to be successful it has to sell to casuals as well as the hardcore.I just don't see E3 directly impacting casuals, especially now that's it so small now and less of a "show".

I wouldn't underestimate the power of "word of mouth". If Sony can pull off their *E3 coverage via PS3* stunt as well as or better than Microsoft, they can sway many simply from word of mouth. Think about it... self coverage on their own system is like free propaganda. They can spin E3 almost anyway they see fit. E3 may currently be more private... but with two major companies (sony and microsoft) covering their highlights on their respective system's online service, you can almost say this is the first time E3 has gotten this much penetration into the "casual" market. In the past, only the hardcore would attend... now, anyone with a 360 or PS3 (assuming sony pulls it off) will have access to E3 news coverage. Time's a changin' my friend and it looks like good things lie ahead.

As for making or breaking... I don't think Sony can do much worse than it has been recently. When you're at the bottom you can only go up. And up is looking darn good right now if you ask me.

Make or break? No, probably not. But I do think they'll have a chance at influencing how many PS3s are going to be sold this year up-to and including Christmas.

But the whole self promotion thing on your own system depends on actually having the system already no? I'm was actually thinking more about how E3 might impact those who haven't bought into any system yet.

Everything helps, but e3 without a price drop ultimately will do very little IMO. The price tag is what people see at Xmas.
